The imagery here was actually really disturbing and scary and the way that Cas was plagued with dreams of Anna being tormented just cut me up. I wish we had gotten more interaction between Cas and Anna, but I get how it really wasn’t possible under the circumstances. Not only did that suck, but getting towards the climax of the book and anticipating how things could only end between Cas and Anna filled me with dread. That’s why I give complete props to Blake for ending their story the way she did; so perfect and yet heart-wrenching at the same time. Bittersweet is the word I'm looking for. Loved this one.
Note: The characters, humor, dialogue and interaction reminded me a little of one of my favorite TV shows ever: Buffy the Vampire Slayer. So there is also that. ...more

Even better for me is when you sprinkle in a little romance into the mix, in this case with a murderous ghost!
I really liked the entire cast of characters (which included a *nice* popular girl! Wow!), the humor, the development of the relationship between Cas and Anna, and the mysteries. And Cas and Anna. I’ve read that he may be an annoying character to some, but I loved his snarky, teen boy voice. I also liked the way the author set up the sequel, which I picked up right after finishing this....more

I want to marry it and have its children. Children that are smart, and funny, and witty, and spunky, and independent, and brave, and different, and - this is important - who embrace that difference. The embodiment of these traits is Kami. I adored her character. I also loved the chemistry between her and her BFF, and between her and Jared, the imaginary friend she’s had since birth who turns out to be not so imaginary. He is a finely-written character as well, a bad-boy who has real reasons to be “bad” and yet still continues to be sympathetic. His life is tragic and the way he acts at the end is cruel and broke my heart a lot, yet my love remains steadfast. I don’t think this book will hit the spot for everyone, but I really appreciated its modern gothic stylings: the dialogue, pacing and setting. Highly recommended....more

A tepid version of Girl With a Dragon Tattoo and I’m not just saying that because it’s YA. I see why the comparison is there -- tough, orphaned hacker extraordinaire fighting a seemingly omniscient enemy/conspiracy with only a couple of people in this world she can trust on her side -- but I just couldn’t muster up a lot of sympathy for either main character. The mystery itself was a little more compelling, but I think in general successful thrillers should be a little more gritty and well, thrilling. ...more
