Sins Duet #1

Secret Sins

Rate this book
There were three of us.

Strat. A rock god who walked on air.
Indy. A handsome musician smart enough to live through stardom.
Me, a girl with everything to lose and nothing she wanted to keep.

I loved them both.
They say three's a crowd, but maybe I liked crowds...until the one thing I wanted to keep was stolen out of my arms.

I left that world, straightened up, went to law school.
I was fine until Indy walked back into my life to remind me of what I'd lost.
They say there's no time like the present, but when the past shows up with an invoice there's gonna be hell to pay.

CD Reiss is a New York Times bestselling author. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn't pick up she's at the well hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master's degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

She's frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn't ever gotten her out of chopping a single cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

★★★★★! Secret Sins (stand-alone). Vivacious & feisty Margie Drazen’s story; the men, the life & the secrets she will take to her grave!

“If it’s any comfort, you were the one who hurt me the most.”

Secret Sins (stand-alone) is heiress Margaret Drazen, Margie aka Cinnamon aka Cin’s story.

Born into privilege and wealth, the oldest of the many Drazen siblings to follow, the story zeroes in on Margie in her late teens with tidbits of her upbringing, family and glimpses into her future. Though she is already sassy, strong, sharp-tonged and set on not letting anyone close, the spring of 1982 was the year she grew up.

It was the era of groupies and rock n’ roll; sex and drugs. Amidst it all a singer superstar Stratford Gilliam, Strat, his best friend, guitarist Indiana Andrew McCaffrey, Indy aka Drew plus the girl they would come to know as Cin. It’s Margie to the core, yet a side we have never seen; secrets, sins and the lies that will forever change the direction of her life!

Shocking! Brilliant! Spell-binding! Pieces in a puzzle! A stand-alone, but crucial to the Drazen family saga!

“We regarded each other, above and below. half-drugged and young, looking for stupid excuses to do stupid things.”

WHAT. JUST. HAPPENED? I knew this author carried the ability to surprise me, but DAMN! This powerful and captivating story shocked me to my very core, leaving me in a state of complete disbelief. It was like a beautiful train wreck in my mind. It was all leading up to something big. I knew it was coming, but I had no idea...NONE! I thought I prepped myself for anything when it comes to CD Reiss, but I was wrong. Once again, she put me under her spell, shattering my heart and kicking around the fragments, only to carefully mold them back together. In my mind I heard the satisfying click of the final puzzle piece snapping into place. This book may have a deeper meaning for some, but whether you are a hardcore fan or newbie, SECRET SINS will move you, shock you, and transport you to a provocative world you will NEVER want to leave.

Keep in mind that SECRET SINS by CD Reiss can be read as a standalone. Fans of a certain series...this book will drive you WILD! LIVE #6Stars <-- MY HEART WENT INTO OVERDRIVE. This is a Rock Star story like you've never read before and I utterly LOVED it!
Amazon US * Amazon UK * iBooks * Nook * Amazon Print * Audible

Fans of CD REISS will inhale Secret Sins and new readers will be left craving more of her work. It's a heart wrenching, evocative story in a body of work that's close to my heart and perfectly penned so it can be enjoyed solely as a STANDALONE providing a glimpse into the penmanship and vivid story telling of CD Reiss. Those who are familiar with the Drazen family will garner so much from this story… I can’t tell you exactly what because it’s a SECRET, a secret that blew my mind. There’s so much to discuss and analyse. So much I want to say. So much I shouldn’t say. My heart broke and healed as I was shocked and awed at the same time. SECRET SINS is a large window into the life of Margie depicting two time periods that showcase the things that both shape and rock her life.

SECRET SINS stormed through my emotions, powerfully pulling at my heart as the raw elements unravelled on the walls of the writing canvas with an intensity that I relished. I had a lightbulb moment… a moment when I believed I may know the direction of the story arc causing MY MIND, MY HEAD, MY HEART INTO OVERDRIVE and I KNEW!! And… Oh. My. Goodness, my expectations and preconceived ideas before I began this story were surpassed. There are elements that made me excited and heartbroken as the compelling story fiercely resonated in my heart and I considered all the perfectly placed layers of the story that showcase the incredible writing talent of this author. I sobbed, I knew what was coming and I still sobbed as the angst that is laced into the prose tore through my emotions. SECRET SINS, for me, is perfection-in-a-book with its developed characters, complexities, heartache and love. The erotic prose has gritty undertones and a story arc that's hard hitting in places. It’s truly a piece of beautiful story telling with spectacular use of the time line showing before and after a pivotal moment in the protagonist’s lives. It made me unexpectedly swell with feelings and weep as nuggets of the story arc are revealed with the vivid unravelling of the first person narrative as it toggles between Margie's younger and older self.

Don’t read or seek out information, all a reader needs to know is that this is Margie’s story and depicts deep, dark secrets. with a look through the keyhole into her mind, her brain, her spunky personality and her past, a past I may not have always wanted to see but never failed to evoke my thoughts and feelings. It’s raw in places. Took my breath away in others. I was concerned, angry, unsure and moved by… I can’t say what. I can’t say anything except this is a #mustread story, perhaps my favourite CD Reiss story to date and a joint top read for the year.

Anyways, people, love triangle here.

This is a story of a woman who became a groupie for two rockstars in a band.
They are best friends and they both like her a lot. They can't decide who gets her, so they keep her around but don't fuck her. Cuz they are bros and bros don't fight.

Cuz she's too good for that shit. She's so pure.

Anywhooo... drugs, women, sex. She sees all this stuff happening around her.
If you're into voyeurism this book has some great scenes.
description

Anyways, so these two dudes don't fuck her. Until they do.

Your thing? Go for it lol
There's also a plot here, by the way, with a bit of a twist at the end. It was short and pretty enjoyable.

First of all......LOVED doesn't seem like a strong enough word for my feelings for this book. ADORED maybe closer to the feeling. But PERFECTION seems perfect. This book was a book that took possession of my soul and never let go.

Secret Sins is told in past and present tense. Teenager Margie Drazen and 29 year old Margie Drazen. How can seeing that one person from your past trigger the memories, both good and bad, of a time in your life that lives deeply buried yet ever present? Her story is amazing, awesome, emotional, gripping, tragic, inspiring, the list could go on and on. From chapter one to the very last page, her story grabbed me, moved me and took me on an emotional and intense roller coaster ride.

Margie is strong, determined and resilient. The many layers of Margie Drazen are magnificently exposed by the author who rips her open for the readers in a touching and beautiful way. She truly is a woman shaped by her teenage self and her very rich and influential family. Then two best friends, Indy and Strat, two rising stars in the music business, meet Margie "Cinnamon- Cin" Drazen and all their lives will be forever changed. Growing up, being in love, experiencing firsts can all be pure and electric yet be tragic and raw. The intertwining of Strat, Margie, and Indy strings their souls together in a tale of epic magnitude.

So I must say that I went into this story just reading the blurb. The "Secret Sins" of this story needs to unfold for the reader Completely Unspoiled. For those of you who know Margie from CD Reiss's previous books (Songs of Submission Series, Corruption Series, Songs of Perdition), you will be blown away getting to know Margie better. For those of you who have not meet the Drazen's........Please, Please take a chance on this book and be magically enchanted to the feelings and emotions that only CD Reiss can give. She is so amazingly talented. The depth of her storytelling takes you to another level. This book is truly a Standalone and one that will magically penetrate your soul with Love, Loss, Remorse, and Redemption.

I'm not going to edit this review every day, but I don't want to leave FOUR DAYS on there indefinitely. That would be weird. I just got excited yesterday.

This was my reaction upon finishing Secret Sins...

"OMG! THAT IS THE MOST ... WHAT JUST HAPPENED!?!
WHAT. JUST. HAPPENED?!?!
I'm .... I'm sorry, what?! What! WHAT! WHAT! WHAT! WHAT! WHAT! WHATTTTTTTTT!!!! ****screams****
OH. MY. GOD!
That is SHOCKING!
That is... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHAT THE WHAT!
Omg! I can't take it. I can't. :::freaks out::: I DIDN'T SEE IT. EVER. AT ALL. NOT ONCE. I NEVER SAW THAT COMING! Omg! I am so stunned. Did that just happen?
THAT. JUST. HAPPENED!!
I'm so shocked. Hahaha! I feel like I have to go back to the beginning and read Secret Sins again, because I can't believe what I just read! WHAT THE FRIGGIN WHAT ::gasp::"

This book has a twist that I NEVER. EVER. AT ANY POINT saw coming. It was truly shocking. I had to go back and read several pages again just to make sure I was reading everything right. Secret Sins is a scandalous, shocking addition to the Drazen storyline. It will leave you gasping, dying, on the edge of your seat, crying, "NO WAY... NO FREAKING WAY. THAT IS UNREAL!

Now... if you know me, you know that I am a HUGE CD Reiss fangirl. My passionate affair with her books started when I read the Songs of Submission series. I absolutely LOST MY MIND over Jonathan Drazen.

LOST. MY. FREAKING. MIND!

The dynamic of the Drazen bunch is complex, compelling and beyond intriguing. The way each of them functions has me hooked. I'm addicted. Each character is distinct in personality. They all pull you in even when you don't think you'll care. And that was me with Margie Drazen's story. To be honest, I saw that this was her book and I thought, "Ugh... I don't know. I don't know if her story is going to be an "Angie" story." I was hesitant about it. Not because I didn't think that CD Reiss could write a good story for her. CLEARLY, she can, she did, and I have 100% faith in her unending talent (which is why I read the book), but because it was Margie. Margie Drazen has always seemed like she had all her stuff together. So what could be so great about her?

WELP... **laughs in disbelief** LET ME TELL YOU.

This was a whirlwind. I'm still processing. I still can't believe what I read. I'm still like, "WHAT THE WHAT WHAT WHAT WHAT!" It's so stunning, because I just never saw it coming. I just never saw this. And I can't help but delight in this little wicked web that CD Reiss has crafted. God, I want to say so much to you about it, but I'm going to say nothing. NOTHING except...

GO
read.
GO READ.
GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO READ.

If you are a fan of the Drazen bunch, this is going to burn through you like a wild fire. You are going to be DYING over this twist! If you have NOT met the Drazen's, I still think you are going to be left with your jaw hanging open and your eyes double blinking in SHOCK.

It's SCANDALOUS.
A TWIST I HAVE NEVER SEEN IN A BOOK.

And of course the writing is supreme, far above the rest. CD Reiss remains the Queen of my little heart. ALWAYS. AND FOREVER. THE END.

A few things...

1. If this is your first CD Reiss book, it’s a great place to start – and you get a free copy of BEG at the end (Jonathan’s story). If it isn’t your first read, you are going to fucking die. Dead. This is fucking amazing.
2. Don’t fucking spoil it. I get that GoodReads lets you put those nifty little spoiler links in. But most of us (me included) are tempted to click on those. It will ruin it. DO NOT be that person who ruins it for EVERYONE. And you do you know how I know you will ruin it? Because I read this twice and the second time was still an amazing experience, but knowing the secrets – my reaction was much more tame, less explosive. And my initial reaction. Off the charts emotional. It was the best part of the story for me. So if this is your first read, let me just explain – the secret in this book... it is the first time we are seeing it, EVER.

Secret Sins is the story of Margie Drazen. The sister who fixes things. The one who seems to have her shit together. The one that everyone relies on. She carries the fucking load for the dysfunction that is the Drazen clan. I had no real idea what sort of story Margie would have to tell. We got to see a lot of ‘grown up’ Margie in SOS and SOC but in Secret Sins we get to see a different side of this girl. A little bit reckless and what we see explains so much about the woman we now know as an adult.

We are transported into the past, two poignant moments in the life of Margaret Drazen. In the eighties, carefree and captivated by Strat and Indy and then as a little more mature but still drawn to the man that she knew when he had just shed his youth and was living the dream in LA. Then we see a more adult version of Margie, the restlessness of her youth shrugged off and a little more hardened by her experiences. But when a man from her past returns, Margie isn’t immune to the way he still makes her heart race.

Every single book I’ve read from Christine has been an amazing experience. I’ve loved each of them for unique reasons. But this book left me breathless. From the insights we get into Declan Drazen that left me with chills, to the moment (THE FUCKING MOMENT) when my heart clawed its way out of my chest and fell on the floor, every single second I spent lost in this story was an experience. I lost it while reading this book. I was a wreck. My heart was shredded and it was the most amazing experience. I tried to relive that moment by reading it twice and although it still hit me, nothing could replicate the first time experiencing it.

The writing. The fucking flawless writing. It was raw, it was gritty and it was sex dipped in pure fucking lust. It had a beat and a rhythm to it. Poetic, erotic and in a league of its own. I still can’t believe what I’ve read.

Secret Sins was a stunning and provocative coming of age story of a woman who learned hard lessons through youthful indiscretions. A story of the past shaping a future. It was hot. It was a twist-your-stomach-up-in-knots romance told in a voice that is unique to THIS author.

Get this book. Get all of the books. Read them. The writing this author is capable of is out of this world. No one even comes close.

Margaret “Margie” Drazen is a whirlwind of confidence and an impenetrable cool exterior. Being a Drazen hasn’t always been easy for Margie, but she embraced the connections her family name brings and yet she learned how to stand on her own. While interning at a law firm, Margie starts to work on a case that brings her past full circle into her present when a certain man re-enters her life.

“I go by Drew now,” he whispered.”
“I go by Margie. My real name.”
“I remember.”
“I didn’t expect you to.”

Once upon a time there was a redhead that called herself Cinnamon, or Cin for short, but calling her a groupie seems lesser because her relationship with two band-mates was much more than just skin on skin. Indiana “Indy” McCaffrey and Stratford “Strat” Gilliam were members of Bullets and Blood and Cin had a certain way about her even in her late teens to forge a unique bond with these musicians. The attraction to Indy and Strat was instant and dynamic and the sexual tension never waned which led to some sizzling hot times.

“All I had to do was stay still as they fucked me like two musicians with the same beat. One in, one out. Then both in at the same time.”

For those who have been waiting for Margie’s story, this book doesn’t disappoint, as we get a glimpse into Margie during her teens – a time that helped to shape Margie into the woman we admire by the end of CD’s various series (Songs of Submission, Songs of Perdition and Corruption.) By learning more about Margie’s past, it enriched her character development and led to a huge revelation that still has me reeling!! While I figured out the secret early on in this book, it did not lessen the impact in any way because it makes perfect sense!! I simply loved it and felt for Margie’s experience.

It is no secret that I’m a huge CD Reiss fan and being reunited with a Drazen sibling feels like returning home. Casting aside any bias, the prose are lyrical and the reader will easily get swept up in the enigma of Margie. I highly recommend Secret Sins to everyone who wants a story of first love, a second chance and some hot times with a fiery heroine and a hotter than hell rock star hero.

5 Much More Than It Seems Stars

When we think about our lives and the people we have become, it is telling in how we need to go back in order to go forward...By pondering our actions with the perspective of the person we are now, past experiences become more insightful and intense... heightened by knowing the results to those actions taken then...

It can be revealing: a road map to the whys of who we are, a landmine of emotions and confrontations. It can raise up all the secrets sins and lies pushed down to the darkest recesses...things we claim to not think of... but do in our alone moments...things, so many things which we thought we had control of but slipped our grasp.

C.D. Reiss touches on this very concept with Secret Sins. This book is very special because it has a duel purpose. Readers of Reiss' Songs of Submission series have met the Drazen Family and become obsessed with it. This is not unusual. Many talented authors have created characters who are so compelling, more stories must be told. Characters jump off pages and demand attention. I could create a list a mile long of these characters/family members who have stimulated this desire and readers would be shaking their heads Yes! Please give us more... more back story, more whys, more being in the moments.... Just more because of the love for these fictional characters. It is a testimony to the author's ability to give just enough life to these people causing our minds to run rampant...needing to understand it all...

Secrets Sins has two life paths...
It is an amazing introduction to the talents of C.D.Reiss and her creation, The Drazen Family. Specifically Margie. If you haven't read the Songs of Submission series, this gives the reader a very unique vision. They are given a direct, clear and seriously captivating tale of a woman who has lived big; who is actively pursuing her legal career. She is part of a very influential, wealthy family in Los Angeles. They are the Upper Crust of Society and Catholic. The father is a man who instills fear and expects obedience. The complexity and layers of this group is detailed, meaningful and startling. No character is a throw away or filler

This story has been asked for, begged for, demanded...ever since Margie Drazen first appeared.
We get this strong, self assured woman dealing with the last step before passing the bar, clerking at a firm. It is her crossing paths with someone from her past....the past she kept in that closed off place in her heart which opens the flood gates of memories.

We experience it all. The now of 1994 and the past of 1982. This ride for a " C.D. Newbie" is thrilling in the way Reiss writes...all of it is authentic and clear...you will feel the ocean hitting your feet as you sit in your chair taking this all in. You will understand how a mind can be molded and work; become the fly on the wall during events which will shape this woman beyond the 1990's and into the future.

If anything, this book opens a window to a time when Rock Stars were gods and girls claiming to be women wanted to be part of the rush, the thrill. Margie, though, was very different... mature beyond her years...or so she thought.

There is the added gift of Beg, the first part of Songs of Submission...the start of it all. This allows you to see the grown Drazens in all their C.D. Glory. By coupling these two pieces...an insight and a beginning... you are getting a unique experience none of us Drazen Fans have had...Lucky you!

And if you are part of the obsessed readership of Songs of Submission and C.D. Reiss....You better buckle up for this is one helluva ride...It has everything we love C.D. for plus so much more...

I Can't Even...No Words

So as I said...This was a spoiler free review and I hope it did it's job....To get you interested... to want to know what this Drazen family is all about... to be curious as to why so many readers are taken by the writing of C.D.Reiss. Why we are so passionate about each and every entry she does...

I can only give you my own opinion; she is one incredible artist. Her attention to detail is just this side of enough...her way of writing "movies for the mind" kills...Her determination to get things right is evident in the crafting of her work.

In other words, the woman can write. So get the book and read it.

~~~~~ Before Reading ~~~~~
Well, C.D. Reiss is at it again....
Creating a need I cannot ignore...
Putting it in such a way, anyone could be captured...
Oh the secrets abound...
Only one way to find out...
I am almost afraid to write how I am feeling about this book...I have seen a ton of five star reviews, and I have got to say that what I was expecting with this read, and what I got was very disappointing.
First of all though, I will say that I have always loved everything CD Reiss has written...and as far as the writing quality goes with this book, I still feel she is brilliant. My biggest complaint with this book is that it is over at 64%. Yes, there is another additional short story after the main one, but I would have liked to have been warned about this. "Secret Sins" is more like a novella. It tells a story of Margaret Drazen, and expands on who she was back in the 80's, as well as who she is at present.
There is a "big" secret that comes out. Quite frankly though, I saw it coming from very early on. It didn't surprise me as I was reading. I just think that I would have liked more depth to the characters, as well as a longer story.
I adored her other series..and I am always up for more reads on the Drazen family; but I am sorry to say this was just an ok read for me. It didn't wow me, and I prefer a full length book when I buy it, or at the very least label it a novella. Another warning I will give to other readers, there is a threesome in this one...I personally don't have issue with that, but some do...So just a heads up on that!
What strikes me as funny as all hell right now is that I still don't know how old Margie/Cin was! LOL WTH?! This story was about rock 'n' roll in the 80s, being young and making some really dumb decisions, drugs, secrets, extreme denial, and unexpected second chances. Told from Margie's POV, every other chapter allows us to see the history and connection she shared with both Drew/Indy and Strat. It was a little confusing to me because so much was left unsaid or seemed to happen in the backgroud, and there wasn't a lot of resolution, but it was still an entertaining read.
I gave this audiobook a B- for the narration and B+ for the story at AudioGals.
Narration by Elena Wolfe
Wow, what a twist! For those of you that are familiar with CD Reiss’ Songs of Submission series, Secret Sins will have one stunner of a surprise. However, even if you haven’t previously read or listened to this series, Secret Sins can easily still be enjoyed as a standalone. In fact, I didn’t realize the connection, as the blurb neglects to mention the prior series or even that it’s based in the same world. The main character in this story is Margie Drazen (the oldest Drazen sibling), and the story takes place both in the past, in the 80s when Margie went by “Cin” and was a rebellious rock band groupie, and in the 90s when she assumes the professional role expected of her and is starting out as a corporate attorney.
A couple of notes of caution are worth mentioning before going any further. The steam factor in Secret Sins is erotica level of hot. Additionally, please note that this is a novella length story (only about 4 hours in length). However, it does provide listeners who have not yet started the series with an added bonus in that Beg, Book 1 of the series, is included at the end of this book.
Band members Strat & Indy are as close as brothers, having grown up together, and being practically attached at the hip even before they became bandmates. When they meet a groupie, who garners both of their attentions, they do the only fair thing: they use their brother code to claim her off limits. Cin therefore becomes a good friend of both of them and so begins the whirlwind that has her close to the band at all times, but Cin is no ordinary woman. She’s smart, business oriented, and clearly must come from a high upper-class family (even if she refuses to fully disclose her background). From her designer clothes to the things she knows, Cin is different and more mature than the 18 years of age she claims to be. But as rockstars who are used to indulging in all things to excess, will Strat & Indy have the discipline to be able to honor their brothers’ promise, or will their new found triangle of friendship end in heartache?
It's a one sit read. My mind is blown, my heart is overflowing, and I can't get it out of my head. One of my best reads for 2016 for sure.
3.5 Stars!
In Secret Sins we get a bit of backstory for the oldest Drazen 'child', Margie. I liked it but it's not the love I have for the Songs of Submission series- but that's a tough series to beat. #TeamJonathon
There was such a buzz about this book, I pretty much set everything aside to see what the big reveal here was. I figured out the huge twist fairly early on.
The timeline is a back and forth flip-flop from 1982 to the book's current place in time of 1994. It's nestled deep within rock band members and her future job as an attorney. I do admit some of the legal education stuff was a bit over my head and didn't add a lot to the story but it was obviously well researched.
I know this all sounds kind of blah and vague which is not my intention. I just don't want to give away spoilers for the book. One thing CD Reiss never fails to deliver with her heroines is tough as nails personalities. This is what first attracts the hero to her even as a teen so many years ago. So when they reunite over a common court case, that connection resumes.
I'll take any snippet of story I can get of the Drazen clan for just that chance of more time with Jonathan. I look forward to more Drazen-anythingstories in the future!
Be prepared- this book ends at 64% so it's more novella size.
Band mates Strat and Indy meet young groupie Cinnamon and over time they all form a close relationship with a bond that delves much deeper than any friendship. They all have an emotional connection to each other forming a complicated triangle, but when Strat takes a step back to let his best friend Indy have cinnamon for his own things become entangled and confusing. Love the story line it was very interesting and intriguing, loved the characters and the hot sex. This book does a lot of moving back and forth between the 1980's to the 1990's and the reader can sometimes get lost but all over this was a great read.
5 "I could ask you the same thing." Stars
This book. This heroine. This intricately webbed Drazen world. There are no words for the magic CD Reiss creates within this dysfunctional family. Secret Sins adds more haunting pieces to the Drazen puzzle. She nuances the Margie Drazen we already know and love by giving her so many more layers, portraying her humility, and exposing her vulnerabilities.
A personal note: I write this review as an established mega fan of all Drazen siblings and their sordid stories. While Margie's stand alone story is definitely a fascinating place to start if you haven't read any C.D. Reiss books, my thoughts come from a deep rooted love affair with this authors story telling within the Drazen world.
Two rock stars. One virgin. And one very big secret. The exposure of which I guessed fairly early on in the book. The guess fueling a desire to actual discovery while amplifying the colorful prose and gritty plot. Secret Sins takes readers on a journey unlike any other. Raw depictions and unfortunate circumstances tailor this story to play on your most delicate emotions. Each of the three main characters tangle your thoughts and your heartstrings endearing each one of these unique characters to you despite the obviously taboo situation they've created.
Knowing large pieces of this particular cruel, unusual, awesome and addicting Drazen world, Reiss's always brilliant writing lent itself towards somewhat of a memoir for Margie. This character reaches deep within her scarred soul to share a story. A personal and difficult story. The prose is almost melancholy yet so spell binding in it's delivery. It's evokes feelings of uncertainty about what's happening. Glee and humor. Betrayal, loyalty, manipulation. As Margie's life unravels, I unraveled with her. I have newfound respect for this woman I thought I knew something about. Turns out, I didn't know nearly enough and what I've learned makes me respect her even further. Urges me to know more. To understand her. It makes me curious and outraged and curious again. She knocks your socks off, Margie Drazen does.
Even if you know nothing about the Drazen world, Reiss made it blindingly clear that you need to exist within it via her intelligent prose. As with any other Reiss created Drazen story there's something bigger working underneath the surface. Something that will blow your mind long after the end. Something that will continue to unravel with future stories. Something, that if you've been immersed in this world before, will shed new light on past stories and give you extra insight and a little push to read those stories again.
Given that, I find it prudent to mention this author's extreme talent in creating a piece of work that gives fans something to talk about for a long time after it's over. You find yourself reliving Margie's story by remembering what you learned of her from other Drazen series. There's an urgency to rediscover her parts in her siblings stories allowing your discussion to branch out to other members of the family. And there is always an immediate NEED to analyze, assert, and theorize what-in-the-ever-loving-name-of-sweet-baby-Jesus-in-heaven C.D. Reiss will write next for these people. C.D. Reiss writes conversation starters that last over the course of each new installment she writes.
So yeah, basically, Secret Sins blew me away. It'll go places you don't expect even when you're expecting them. It's a gorgeously emotional book you don't want to miss that, again, begs the question - Where is this brilliantly gifted author taking us next? Who freaking knows. But I assure you I'll buy my ticket to jump back aboard the Drazen crazy train in order to find out.
**Many thanks to my book besties, the Pinklady's, for having these aforementioned discussions about Margie, Secret Sins, and the entire Drazen clan. It was a pleasure dissecting this with them. Please take a moment to read their reviews as they're both brilliant takes on this book:
Personally, I have been praying for Margie Drazen's story since we first met her in Control. To me, Margie Drazen is a super hero. The eldest daughter who steps up for her family over and over at the expense of her own life, sacrificing for the good of her siblings. The capable, whip smart, seemingly boring, spinster sister of the Drazen clan, she spoke to my heart. The grown up Margie we meet in Submission, Corruption and Forbidden is the work- a-holic, straight- laced sister devoted to her family, keeping them out of trouble and acting as a buffer between her siblings and their damaged, fearsome parents. She is sarcastic, pragmatic and doesn't suffer fools. A tough cookie.
Every super hero has an origin story and "Secret Sins" is Margie Drazen's. You will never guess in a million years what it is. Not only were my prayers answered but every wish I could have ever dreamt of was granted. It's so spectacular. It will suck you in and leave you breathless, whether you're coming into this story blind or have been consumed by every detail of the Drazen dynasty. The musicality of Ms Reiss' prose drives this epic story and the visions of her LA beguile and enchant, but it is Ms. Reiss' ability to touch the hearts of her readers that never ceases to impress and surprise me. She is masterful in the way she manipulates the emotions of her readers. Margie's secrets and the turbulent emotions they trigger steadily engulf you, pulling you toward an unimaginable climax.
They say still waters run deep, and "Secret Sins" takes us to the Mariana Trench. It turns out that our Margie wasn't always so serious and buttoned up. In "Secret Sins" she is precocious, brilliant, does nothing by halves and is in way over her head. A self-proclaimed teenaged rock star groupie heiress, her idea of fun is bending chaos to her will, and walking on the knife edge of trouble - big trouble in the form of two of the sexiest rock stars around who also happen to be best friends. Indy and Strat are charismatic as hell, provocative and every girl's dirty fantasy - and Margie's are hot, hot, hot. Set against the drug fueled hard rock scene of 80s LA , Margie's story is like a night blooming flower - unexpected, beautiful, and intoxicating. It is heartbreaking, shocking, raunchy, scandalous, and stunningly romantic. Ms. Drazen has a fragility hidden beneath that hard shell and tailored business suit that will bring you to tears. And layers. So. Many. Layers. Hiding so many things.
"Secret Sins" has a shifting time line which alternates between teenage Margie and fledgling lawyer Margie, which only heightens the tension and emotional impact of the events and revelations that turned Margie into the family's fixer and secret keeper. The tension is like a tsunami - building and building until the wave of emotion knocks you flat and its undertow threatens to take you out to sea. "Secret Sins" had me gasping, bawling, and grinning like a fool. Some of the tears were happy, some sad, but all of them were genuine. Flat out, this is some of Ms. Reiss' best storytelling to date. It's vivid, bold , complex and fearless - just like Margie. YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK.
THIS IS MY TOP READ FOR 2016.
10 stars - 5 for Cinnamon and 5 for Ms. Margaret Drazen, Esq.
Margie and her secrets have been unleashed!
#nevertell
I could not eat this book up fast enough. Such delicious and poetic words that made me laugh and cry and become so appalled I didn't know if I could handle the last few chapters. Such a brilliant and moving love story that transcends time between two decades. Cin, Strat and Indy are characters that will capture your heart!
If you haven't read anything Drazen, go ahead. Treat yourself. This author can weave words and stories like you have never read. Margie (Cin) is the oldest and maybe the most highly anticipated character of them all. Once you start, you will want to delve head first into the whole clan.
If you've read about the Drazens before, this is brilliant beyond the portrait you thought you knew about the Drazen family. I'm not gonna lie. There are a few scenes in here that will shock you and mess you up for a bit. Hang on. Get there. The secrets revealed at the end are totally worth every moment you've waited for this book. And now the book hangover sets in. I need a cigarette.
There's super sexy rock stars and groupies. Sex, drugs and rock and roll! I highly recommend!!
I did not want this book to end! Secret Sins was provocative, intense and revealing. I recommend reading the Songs of Submissions (SOS) series first otherwise the shock factor will not have the same value.
This is Margaret (Margie) Drazen’s story, she’s the eldest Drazen sibling and mature beyond her years. She doesn’t believe in feelings, it only interferes with her winning. She also has a wild streak that led her to Indiana McCaffrey and Stratford (Strat) Gilliam, guitarist and lead singer for the group Bullet and Blood. She finds her way into their lives and much as they find their way into hers. One night and a few Quaaludes later Margie’s life is turned upside down.
The story provides answers where you least expect it. The hidden truths could have been a warning but instead they were kept protected. WOW! This story has my head spinning. The Drazen family never ceases to amaze me. 5 Stars!
Are you ready for the Sins to be revealed??? OMG guys! Secret Sins is so so stunning, so captivating, so OMG AMAZING that I can’t even put into words how much I LOVED IT!!!! I have been dying for this book and boy, was it worth the wait!!!
This review will not reveal anything because you HAVE TO read this on your own and experience it as the author intended. So much thought and effort went into this story to really give readers sensory overload so I really hope beyond hope that no one spoils this story for anyone by revealing anything that happens.
Everything you need to know is in the blurb – go in with an open mind and open heart. I will only say this….No one writes sexy heat like C.D Reiss and this book – just WOW! *fans self* My heart and mind nearly combusted from the emotion, the shock and awe. Fans of the Drazen family will learn so much about Margie and what makes her tick, what makes her who she is today.
C.D. Reiss is such a gifted author and Secret Sins is my absolute favorite to date. Yes, your emotions will run the gamut, but this book will really make you fall in love with this author, her writing style, the Drazen family and I promise that you will be left wanting more from her. I can’t wait to hear readers reactions when they pick up this book because OMG IT IS EPIC!!!
CD Reiss is just something special. Her Songs of Submission series is one of my favorite reads. I read all the books over 3 days...unable to put them down. Any chance to get back to the Drazen clan it met with excitement but I admit that Margie's tale was totally different. Again, this author goes out of the box and totally rattles me.
This is a haze of past and present moments telling a love story of young careless choices and new adult needs and purpose...all tied up in the drug and free lovin setting of the 80s!
Margie was aways an enigma but WOW...I had no idea...no idea what I was about to experience! A total bombshell dropped! Hell yes to the laid back sexy rockers who showed her how to live and love and even more hell yea to a strong woman who owns her life! Hot smart lawyers today...quaalude lovin youngsters yesterday. What a ride♡
If you’ve yet to read any of CD Reiss’ work, this book is designed to be read as a standalone. At the back of Secret Sins is the first book in the Submission series, Beg. So, if you like this story, you can continue on with the Drazen family.
I devoured this book.
DEVOURED.
IT.
The title, Secret Sins? Totally apropos.
You might want to put a pillow on the floor so you don’t hurt your jaw when it drops.
‘Cause let me tell you, it’ll drop HARD.
I can’t get enough of the Drazen family and ever since I met Margie in the Submission series, and then in the Corruption series and Forbidden, I’ve wanted to know more about her. The Margie in those books has a tough edge to her personality, a straightforward tenacity combined with a razor sharp wit. She’s the fixer, the rock, the one with all the answers. Here, in this book, we get to see the genesis of that, of her as a person. And never in my wildest dreams did I see any of this coming!
Told in first person, the book masterfully weaves back and forth through time to tell her story. CD’s writing has a lyrical quality that I can’t help but get swept up in. The dialog is fresh, the scene setting is period correct and so vivid I could close my eyes and reach out and touch it. Like a movie playing just for me. But, what I loved the most, was how emotionally invested I was in Margie. Her joy was my joy, and her pain was my pain.
This book slayed my emotions and had my brain spinning in ways I wasn't fully prepared for. It’s one you find yourself so surprised by you end up talking out loud. You may not want to read this one in public… Just sayin’.
Brava!
Margie!....whoah!. Where did you come from?
Untouched Heart wrapped in a sinfully delicious body. Free spirit trapped in a conformed family....my Gawd she's volcanic, live wire of a personality, smart mouth and razor sharp brain....a lethal combination and a Drazen to boot...i mean what could go wrong...right?
description
No one knew what to do with me. I didn’t even know what to do with me. I knew I didn’t fit in, and I didn’t care . Maybe it was my version of rich girl ennui. Maybe I was just too smart, too good at too many things. Or too acerbic to make those warm girly relationships. I depended on no one. Didn’t feel useful.
description
Well prepare to be surprised cause this is the eldest Drazen, almost matrichial in character is one helluva bold brass. She's also a groupie to the band Bullets and Blood , though more for the guitarist and lead vocalist-Indiana McAffrey and Strattford Gilliam. And it's reciprocal-equally! And that creates THE PLEDGE. It's either/or situation which at one point develops into either/AND and I was crosseyed while reading the powerfully orgasmic sex scene!
description
I didn’t know what or who I wanted, but my body got wet for both Sexy Strat and Sincere Indy .Insane.
Annoying.
Beautiful.
Looking from one to the other, knowing I could have either, I couldn’t pick an adjective, much less a man.
I loved the story, the plot, the setting, the characterization, the dialogues, the lines, the mood...EVERYTHING !!!
And then they meet years later....actually only two of them and the story just explodes! A sin just comes to light, so secret, so heartbreaking it just crippled me. Acute anguish...pain in my heart....felt like pulling my hair, running out to the beach and drowning in the ocean!!!
The light tasted too yellow. The air hurt. The floor and sky were too loud.
How can you tell a piece of your Heart that you are not for him **Fat Ugly Tears just rolled down my cheeks**
description
Note to self: “Not feeling” stuff doesn’t mean you’re not feeling it. Being unemotional and cold doesn’t mean you don’t have a pot full of emotions waiting to boil over. It means the heat hasn’t been turned up enough, and the pot just hasn’t been there long enough. It means the pot hasn’t reached capacity. But it will.
For a girl who isn't supposed to have feelings, her soul is boiling cauldron of all the bubbling hot emotions in the world!!!!
Brilliant Christine ...Bravo!!!!!
I'm speechless, just astounded.
‘Dad asked me once why I loved trouble. Why I seemed to enjoy it so much. Why I made my own if I couldn’t find it in the wild. I had no answer. Still didn’t.’
When we pick up a book by CD Reiss we pretty much know what we’re going to get. Beautiful, intelligent and vivid writing with characters that provoke you and makes you question how you feel. When an Author makes you feel very strongly about a story and characters you know they’ve given you an insight into their mind and heart. After all if an Author doesn’t care deeply, a reader won’t either no matter how you end up feeling. As long as you feel, you know you’ve enjoyed the story.
‘Note to self: “Not Feeling” stuff doesn’t mean you’re not feeling it. Being unemotional and cold doesn’t mean you don’t have a pot full of emotions waiting to boil over. It means the heat hasn’t been turned up enough, and the pot just hasn’t been there long enough. It means the pot hasn’t reach capacity. But it will. And your heart will beat so fast and hard you’ll want to die.’
And feel we did, as once again we got caught up in this Author’s words. We followed Margie through two moments in time- a past and present- and got to know an almost hidden secret side of her. Margie, for us, is a very difficult person to warm to. We hold our hands up and say, we don’t fully understand her nor connect to her. Our initial feelings are that she’s cold, clinical and doesn’t suffer fools gladly. In some respects it’s as if she’s devoid of any hint of vulnerability and tact. Rather, she merely exists chasing that exact moment someone will take their time and really dig past the front she puts out there and find her heart which in turn will make her confront herself and accept it.
‘Fuck this. I didn’t know what to do with my body, with my place in the world, my family. I was trapped in all of it.’
We know that her family plays a tremendous part in her situation and being, as well as isolation from certain aspects of life like love and empathy. This woman does not know affection and the basic nature of emotions and how to embrace and accept them. She stands in the world looking in rather than being in the centre of it. She’s a ticking time bomb of pent up avoidance.
‘I hadn’t been loved for the right reasons in a long, long time.’
‘I’d never liked feelings, even before I consciously pushed them away.’
“Feel it, Margie. Feel it.”
As we follow Cin, we meet Indy and Strat from her past and come to know how they’ve shaped her present. Two very important men in Margie’s life who’ve marked her forever and have left quite the impression emotionally, though still at a distance. Forcibly removed. It’s not a common occurrence for us to feel so strongly about a situation and its players whether positive or negative. CD Reiss made us feel indignation one moment, sympathy, love and surprise the next. Well played.
‘I wanted to crawl inside him and live there forever.’
‘I wanted him to like me, to want me, to love Cin again and learn to love Margie.’
I absolutely loved time traveling with CD Reiss back to the 80's
CD Reiss can do no wrong in my eyes. I love the incredibly riveting world of the Drazens. I'm interested in any tiny little morsel she will give us but she gave us so much with this amazing book. I've always been so amazed/impressed/scared of Margie since I met her in The Submission Series. I loved this early look at her.
I was in over my head. Way fucking over. Yet I liked it. More than liked it, I was comfortable when I was out of my depth.
 photo SECRET SINS ART_zpsjm42x7v3.jpg
I loved this look at Margie, even when she was probably less than legal she was strong and smart. She definitely had her shit together early on. This gave us an idea about just how quick she had to grow up in the Drazen household.
I loved Indy from the start. What's not to love about a sincere rock star? I loved the tension between all three characters and the close knit bond between Indy and Strat.
He kissed my breath away. He kissed my defenses to dust. His lips dared me to feel nothing. He turned me from solid to liquid.
This book has everything - sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll and a huge Secret. A fantastic read, of course I don't expect anything less from the Sheakspeare of Smut! She always delivers and can't wait for more.
