Etymology

[edit]

Attested as 't Nieuwe Schilt in 1680. Compound of nieuw (new) and an unclear element. The second element may derive from West Frisian skil (small seashell) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -t or, alternatively, be cognate to the hydronym Schelde. The element nieuw was added to distinguish the settlement from Oudeschild.

Compare Schouwen.
