Wilmont Collins (born 1963) is the mayor-elect of Helena, Montana, the state's capital.[1] On November 7, 2017, Collins defeated 16 year incumbent mayor James E. Smith to become the first African American mayor of Helena and in the state of Montana .[2] Collins is a Liberian refugee who fled the civil War there and has lived in Montana for 23 years. [3] Collins works as a Child Protection Specialist with the Montana Department of Health and Human Services, and is a member of the U. S. Naval Reserves as well as an adjunct instructor at Helena College – University of Montana. His wife, Maddie, works as a registered nurse with VA Montana and is also a member of the U.S. Army Reserves. His daughter, Jaymie, serves with the U.S. Navy active duty and his son, Bliss, is a senior at the University of Montana in Missoula. [4]
