Francine is weakening after striking Louisiana as a Category 2 hurricane. The system knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses, sent storm surge rushing into coastal communities and raised flooding fears in New Orleans and beyond. As heavy rain drenched the northern Gulf Coast, New Orleans awoke to widespread power outages and debris-covered streets. At its peak more than 450,000 customers were without power. During the storm, the state reported that around 500 people stayed in emergency shelters, that number has since dwindled. There were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries.

Boeing is waiting to find out whether 33,000 aircraft assembly workers are going on strike and shutting down production of the company’s best-selling planes. Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers are voting on Thursday whether to approve a contract offer that includes 25% pay raises over four years. If the factory workers reject the contract and two-thirds of them vote to strike, a work stoppage would begin Friday at 12:01 a.m. PDT. A walkout would be another blow to Boeing’s reputation and finances in a year marked by problems in its airplane, defense and space operations. The union local's president has said he thinks workers will reject the deal.

Ridley Scott is calling his upcoming Roman epic “Gladiator II" his best film. Why? The British fillmmaker jokes: “It's to frighten the others.” Though Scott thinks sequels are “always kind of suspect,” he's long been interested in returning to ancient Rome for a follow-up to his best picture-winning “Gladiator,” with Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix. “Gladiator II” is set a couple decades after that film and brings in a largely new cast, led by Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal. The movie is due in theaters on Nov. 22 and will open on the same weekend as “Wicked.”

The Georgia teenager charged with fatally shooting four people at his high school struggled from his parents' separation and taunting by classmates. That's what Colt Gray's father said in May 2023 to a sheriff's investigator who came asking whether the boy had posted an online threat. No charges were brought in that case. But a transcript of the interview gives a narrow glimpse into the teen's life. Colin Gray told an investigator he and his son lived alone and frequently spent time together shooting guns and hunting. He insisted the boy “didn't want any trouble.” Now both are charged in the Wednesday shootings at Apalachee High School outside Atlanta.
