Bad Guys, Family & A Sweet Romance

Knight of Penn Quarter (Knights of the Castle #9)Knight of Penn Quarter by Terri Ann Johnson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Mateo is jaded and on his way out of the FBI when he lands a date with Rachel, a social worker. One of her cases goes haywire, and she becomes a target. Of course, Mateo won’t leave her to deal with the bad guys alone.

I enjoyed the action scenes in this story, but more than that, the connection between Mateo and Rachel was solid. Heaven was a good addition to the story and their relationship. Loved the funny moments and the hero’s protective nature. Seeing the Kings was also a treat. :)

Sunday Sample - The Pain of Things

Roger’s job puts him in mortal danger with each assignment. Corinne knows he’s keeping secrets, but will she stay in the relationship or will she protect her heart and leave? Find out what she does in The Pain of Things. lrd.to/ThePainOfThings

I slid an arm around Corinne, wincing when her weight rested against my ribs.

She pulled away to look me in the eyes. “Are you sure you’re okay, Roger?”

“I’m fine.” With the remote, I switched on the television. “Let’s watch something until the food gets here.”

Corinne kissed my jaw. “Conversation getting too intense for you?”

“Not likely. In case you don’t know, I’ve dealt with much tougher folks than you.”

“You have no idea how persistent I can be.”

“And you don’t know—”

The doorbell interrupted me and when I attempted to get up, Corinne held me back with one hand to my chest. “Stay. I’ll get it. That was quick though.”

“I need to get my wallet,” I said.

“Let’s worry about that later. My purse is closer.”

We shared a quiet battle of wills as we stared at each other. Corinne wasn’t about to back down so I raised both hands. “Fine, we’ll do it your way.”

She got up and kissed my forehead. “I like it when you recognize that you don’t have to control everything.”

The doorbell sounded again.

“Coming,” Corinne said, opening her purse. “No need to wear out the doorbell.”

Her feistiness brought another smile. The qualities I appreciated most about Corinne were her sassiness and independence. She was woman enough to do for herself and she made me laugh while getting the job done. I could easily see myself falling deeper under her spell. If only she’d let me behind the wall she’d built to protect her emotions.

Maybe the only way to get her to open up was to tell her the truth, like she’d asked me to do so many times. My secrecy was doing more damage than good, and if I wanted to keep Corinne, I didn’t have any other choice than to tell her what she wanted to know. The more I thought about being honest with her, the better I felt. We had the entire evening to talk, so I’d come clean after we ate.

All of a sudden, my scalp prickled, a bad sign. “Corinne?”

A scream and a thud had me on my feet in a second.

Coming Soon - Bankrolled

Thursday, October 4, 2018

Today, I'm sharing a sample from Bankrolled. It's a suspenseful story about a banker and a biker. Pre-order at lrd.to/Bankrolled

When Bo looked up, Imari’s gaze was fastened on her. “Everything okay?”

She nodded, though she was suddenly uncomfortable, and swallowed some Sprite. Bo didn't understand what was happening. Their connection was too tenuous to be defined, but here she sat concerned over misleading him. What was up with that?

Minutes later, Imari escorted her outside. When they sat in the car, he switched on the engine and reversed from the parking spot. He stopped, with his head cocked to one side.

“What’s up?” she asked.

“The car feels weird. Gimme a sec.”

Imari got out and walked to the back tire on her side. Then, he stooped for a closer look.

A vicious swearword met her when she got out and rounded the car. “What’s wrong?”

Imari's face cleared. “Just a flat.”

His reaction was a bit much, but she put it down to the inconvenience. For the most part, Imari was calm, which was one of the things she admired about him. She liked her men strong and in control of their emotions.

Within fifteen minutes he’d changed the tire. As she sat next to him again, he said, “I’ll come and get you later.”

She shook her head. “Don’t put yourself out of the way for me.”

“That’s not what I’d be doing.”

She had her own agenda, so she patted his arm. “Trust me, I’ll be okay. The clubhouse isn’t far from home. Darius will be okay to take me.”

Imari glanced at her as if he didn’t believe her, but didn’t respond.

In front of her house, Imari walked her to the door, pulling her to him with one arm and kissing her to one side of her forehead. “Call me later.”

Sliding both arms around his neck, she pecked him on the mouth. “I will.”

She kissed his chin, opened the door, turned and caught him watching the street. She didn’t remark on it, but it raised a question mark in her mind.

“Inside.” His tone was gentle but firm.

She raised her brows. “This is my home, you know? I get to call the shots here.”

“You just want to run things. Period.” Imari chuckled and shook his head.

“Bye, Imari,” she said, letting him know he was dismissed.

He reeled her in by the back of her neck and planted another one of those sizzling kisses on her.

When she was breathless and clinging to him, Imari stared her in the eyes asserting his dominance. After one last searing kiss, he sauntered down the walkway.

Cheeky bastard.
