Price of a Rose is a Beauty and the Beast fairytale retelling. Three sisters, Lily, Rose and Poppy end up crossing paths with the beastly Sir Griffin, owner of a local estate. But they soon learn there is more to him than his outward appearance and difficult manner.

This was a charming and easy to read book that I found myself swept away in. I loved some of the concepts that Byrd Nash incorporated, including the relationships between the sisters. I think this was a very clever take on one of my favourite fairytales.

The main downside for me was that I felt it lacked a little depth. I think this would be overcome if it was a longer story. For example, I felt the romantic relationship was a little rushed (although I did love its purity) and I would loved to have delved deeper into the magic aspects of the story. That being said, added length and depth would have reduced the easy to read nature of this story, which made this a lovely escapist read.

I received a review copy of this book from the author and I am very grateful to have had the chance to read it. I will definitely keep my eye out for more of Byrd’s fairytale retellings! I would recommend this to anyone that enjoys the classic fairytales, especially if you like new perspectives/twists.

This was a short charming read, if a little bit bland. I really liked the aesthetic of magic and late 19th century english society... The main couple were cute but lacked depth, which would've probably been fixed with an additonal hundred or so pages 🤷🏻‍♀️

(thank you booksirens for providing a free copy of the book in exchange for my honest opinion)

𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐑𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐨𝐨𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐨 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧! I'm expecting a March release but don't have a specific date yet so will update here, the website, and the newsletter.

I'm working with Rick Browning (the Beast and the fairy creatures), and Grace Winpenny (as narrator) for this 𝐀𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐨 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐚 (also called 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 or an 𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐨 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧).

This has been an exciting project and it's been great fun revisiting the story using a different media. 𝐈𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 𝐬𝐨 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐨 𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐚 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈'𝐦 𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐲𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐨 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞.

Listening to it reminded me of having some fairytale stories I had for my kids on CD's when they were young. While I did write this story for adults, because it is a clean and sweet, the audio drama works for pre-teens too.

Beauty and the Beast has long been one of my favorite fairytales and 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐆𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐲 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐞𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐧 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞.

'A Victorian England, 1890, Beauty and Beast fairytale retelling like you’ve never read before.'
Snarky, sassy, witty and absolutely delightful.

When a father looses a card game to the local recluse Baronet, after having bet on his own three daughters, the tittle-tattle of the village is the least the girls will have to worry about. Determined to not let a bet ruin their lives, they step in and confront the man who is supposed to own them.
And this is exactly how Sir Griffin Garrick - Baronet, recluse, eccentric and monster - finds himself saddled with three little ladies with a mind of their own.
The oldest, Lily, rolls up her sleeves to take the strange household in hand. The youngest, Poppy, devours his books on magic while playing secretary. While Rose, the middle daughter, is determined to restore his forgotten garden. And they are all set on taming the Beast and unravelling the curse he's under.

This is how their tale starts and if you'd like to know a little more about what you may find within it's pages, here is a little sneak a peak:

A Beast who may every now and then flee his own house just to be out of the way of three little ladies. 'God save him from meddlesome women' it seems. And I swear I burst out laughing at his particular predicament. Especially when he realised he may be finding himself at a dead end while trying to debate with a little girl.
This is one Beast that's one of a kind! Snarky, witty and absolutely adorable, despite (or maybe due to) his gruffy muttering and grumbling.

Three determined little ladies whom you can't help but love. Even if one of them may be occasionally too busy reading to save her own sister.

A few old retainers who've earned the right to snap and snarl and a house with a mind of it's own, that likes playing the occasional prank on unsuspecting staff members.

'We can't have the house thinking it can abduct the staff. We may be monsters, but we will maintain some standards.'

Monsters with standards, as the above quote illustrates. :D

And of course, the competition!
A brainless nitwit as hard to dislodge as a nettle who happens to be the star in fabulous over-the-top dramatic scenes, typical to a Victorian historical romance.

I could write a novella, telling you everything I loved about this tale, but I'll try and keep it short and stick to what you should expect if you decide to pick it up.

Wonderful characters that leap of the page, side cast included, a beautiful setting, intriguing magic and a delightful mystery, as well as a sweet love and lots of snark and humour. Both laugh out loud funny and subtle. The best kind!

"You have the most magnificently ugly face I've ever seen."
"Am I to take that as a compliment? he roared.
"You should, I mean it sincerely."

All in all, Price of a Rose is an absolutely delightful Victorian fantasy fairytale retelling with distinct Jane Austen vibes. Light-hearted, subtle and unique.

And if you love Beauty and the Beast, this is A MUST READ!

Happy reading everyone
and remember...

This is an unusual retelling of Beauty and The Beast.

Full of fairies and magic it is a delightful retelling. I don't read much fantasy but this one appealed to me.

This lovely retelling of the traditional Beauty and the Beast fairy tale had some intriguing new ideas that set it apart from the usual magical rehash. I thoroughly enjoyed the chance to learn about all three of the sisters, rather than focusing on a single one and lumping the others into the selfish-and-evil category. I also liked that Mab's Perfection and Thorne Hall were characters themselves, very reminiscent of Jean Cocteau's black and white classic, La Belle et la Bête. (Which I recommend all Beauty and the Beast fans watch!) In fact, Thone Hall rivals Dracula's Castle in architectural attitude to me.

While Lily, Rose, Poppy, and Griffin all have hints of Jane Austin's inestimable characters about them, (Lily - Fanny Price, Rose - Elizabeth Bennett, Poppy - Margaret Dashwood, Griffin - Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy) they all stand strong on their own as well thought-out characters with dreams, quirks, strengths, and failings. The dialog was well written and enjoyable to read. The settings were beautifully described and created the perfect ambiance for the story. And Grizzle is the hidden gem of the plot, so watch out for him!

Recommended for fans of Robin McKinley, Juliet Marillier and Nancy Cambell Allen .

I would give this book 3.5 stars if half-stars were possible. This is a charming and sweet novella, a Victorian version of the fairytale Beauty and the Beast, which happens to be my favorite fairytale and I have read quite a few retellings of it by now.

Price of a Rose is unique in that the three sisters go to the Beast, here Sir Griffin, together and they each have a role in the breaking of the curse. The oldest sister Lily is given the task of keeping house, Rose who loves the outdoors becomes responsible for restoring the once magnifient gardens, and the youngest sister Poppy is taken on as a secretary. The three sisters help melt the Beast's heart together, even if it is Rose who wins his love. In most other versions of the fairytale, the sisters are either rivals or the sisters who do not go to the Beast are described as vain and proud. But these three sisters are hardworking, down to earth women (with the possible exception of Poppy who dreams of going to the academy for Learned Magicians and becoming a magician). The love between the sisters is a nice addition to the story.

Price of a Rose is described as historical fantasy, and the setting is Victorian era England. Sort of. But with the additions of fae, magic and magicians. However, magic and magical creatures are not very common, and for most people life is what we would expect from a Bronte novel: strict etiquette, morning visits to neighbours, tea, and so on. I like this era, so this is also something in the book's favor.

Unfortunately, the blending of normal Victorian era England and the magic world is not very well executed. It is unclear how much the magic in the world affects people in general or how they feel about it. They speak of Learned Magicians but mostly in passing. I wanted to know more about the magic in this world. If the author ever decides to write an extended version of this book, I hope she expands the magic system more and integrates it more into the world and people's lives. Even if it's just through some tales that people tell each other around the fire at night. Granted, there are some mentions of the former Sir Griffin being a Learned Magician and that his magic created those beautiful gardens around Thorn Hall. I just wanted more like that. More worldbuilding, I suppose.

A few details struck me as strange. They talk about Sir Griffin as a beastly man, but they seem to think he is a man, not a beast. He has been hiding out at his manor for the last 10 years ever since the curse struck, and so people in the nearby village have not seen him. But even though magic is very rare and people would presumably expect to see a man rather than a humanoid beast, no one bats an eye at him having the shape of a beast, tusks and all. They should have been taken aback, shocked or horrified when they first see him. Even if they had heard that he looks like a beast, they should still be shocked when they see him, because hearing about it is not the same as seeing. But everyone seems to take his appearance in strides. And even more strange, when his beastly features start to disappear no one remarks on that either. Shouldn't it be something of a marvel, especially to himself? I would have thought he would stand in front of the mirror studying his appearance after the tusks disappear, or stare at his hands in wonder when they return to human form. But these transformations are mentioned in passing. I don't buy it!

Also, I would have liked a little more tension between Rose and Sir Griffin. Them holding each others' eyes, "accidentally" touching, seeking each out more etc. But they seem to be avoiding each other most of the time. As it is, the love that blossoms betwen them is incomprehensible because it does not really build up.

All in all, it is a good story, but I believe it would have been better off slightly longer, where the author had expanded more on the things I mentioned above. Am I interested in reading more by Byrd Nash? Definitely. There is much potential there.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I've read and loved many Beauty and the Beast retellings, so when I saw the description of this book, I was intrigued due to the unique concept. It's a sweet and simple story set in Victorian England.
I liked the idea that Beauty/Rose and her sisters voluntarily start working for Beast/Griffin as opposed to her being kidnapped like in the original story.

Though I liked most of the book, I felt that the execution could have been even better if the characters had been more fleshed out and the ending hadn't been rushed.
I did like the characters, but they needed more emotional depth for me to to be able to connect to them.

The romance aspect needed some work as well. Griffin shows absolutely no sign of liking Rose, but towards the end, he suddenly professes his love for her which felt a little forced. The book could have used more interactions between them.

The curse of the details also should have been worked throughout the story. The end revelation was abrupt and it left me a little dissatisfied.

The plot was great, and till the first half I was hooked. It was the last 40 pages which needed work. It was like the author tried to fit too many things in 120 pages and missed on giving details. Overall, it was a decent book and suitable for people who need a quick read.

This lovely victorian fantasy romance from one of my favourite indie authors was a treat to read!

“Thorn Hall is under a spell,” announced Lily. “Sir Griffin is cursed,” affirmed Rose. “What are we going to do about it?” asked Poppy /.../.

When their father gambles them away for a flower, 25yo Lily, 21yo Rose and 14yo Poppy take up residence at the Thorn Hall manor, under the reluctant patronage of its beastly lord...each on her own terms. Rose, reminded me so much of Elizabeth Bennett, if Lizzie had loved gardening that is. And her elder sister Lily who couldn’t help cleaning and organising and rearranging things was a lot like Nell Dysart from a book by another favourite author of mine, Jenny Crusie’s Fast Women. Poppy had a bit of Peppi Longstocking common sense in her, an adorable sprite pf a girl. The girls personalities, the vibe of this Beauty and the Beast retelling and the twists to the story reminded me so much of The Wicked Wolves of Windsor, which I loved! The dialogues are delightful morsels and the vivid descriptions bring the story to life. Totally recommend for lovers of sweet and clean historical romance, proper ladies with a mind of their own, but a focus on doing good and twisty but lighthearted tales of magic.

I'm not a fan of Disney's Beauty and the Beast or the original fairytale, but this retelling was well done and highly enjoyable. I look forward to reading the next book.

The characters were new in a lot of ways. I loved their quirks and even the way the fae were woven into the tale. These things made the story more fairytale-like.

My favorite character was Griff. It's not often I find the hero more likeable than the other characters, so that was a happy change. The story was so well written and edited that I sped through it in a few hours.

If you enjoy fairytale romance which is magical and clean, then definitely give this book a try.

Beauty & Beast is one of my favorite fairytale stories, and I’m a sucker for a good retelling. Byrd Nash certainly struck gold as far as I’m concerned with his Victorian Era fantasy mashup retelling, Price of a Rose, the second book in the Historical Fantasy Fairytale Retellings series. This is truly well written stuff that kept me reading addictively deep into the night. Can’t get any better than that, and I’m happy to highly recommend this book.

Price of a Rose: A Beauty & Beast Tale (Historical Fantasy Fairytale Retellings Book 2) by Byrd Nash is a sweet fantasy romance story. This is a unique delightful retelling within an English Manor house regency romances and has a Jane Austiny feel. The story is witty, sweet and charming with a drama and is heart-warming with a little magic.

Three sisters are sent to live with a beastly lord after their father has lost them in his latest gamble. The story is full of romance and intrigue, magic and mystery as the girls each set about to help the Beast with the curse in their own ways.

I really loved this twist on a BATB retelling! Every sister played a role although I did find some of the scenes a bit corny, this was still a Fun and wonderful version and the Beast was downright perfectly grumpy!

Price of a Rose is a savoring and delightful retelling of a much loved fairytale, Beauty and the Beast; but with a twist. Yes, it’s about love and there is a happily ever after, that’s not a spoiler by the way. The story opens with an attempted theft of Mab’s Perfection, a rose of magnificent beauty, which resulted in a kind of restitution of sorts.

The main characters are quickly developed. There are three sisters, Lily is the oldest and who has had the responsibility of running the household at a very young age since the passing of their mother. Rose is the middle daughter, who is a bit of a rebel dabbling in gardening, which is considered “man’s work”. Then there’s Poppy who is a book worm with a passion for magic. BUT! It’s Grizzle who won my heart! His outlook and humor made me chuckle more than once...a couple of times out loud.

Mab’s Perfection...is a character in of herself. Even the estate of Thorn Hill has a personality! Throw in some mischievous fairies and who knows what could happen?

What kept running through my mind as I read was what in the world happened all those years ago to cause such a horrible spell to be placed upon a younger Sir Griffin? And by whom? I had my guess and I was right, kinda. If you want a short love story that will make you laugh, hold your breath and smile with delight then this is your cup of tea!

I have really enjoyed the Historical Fairytale Retellings from Byrd Nash. This one of course brings us her rendition of Beauty and the Beast. I feel like sometimes the retellings can become a bit much from authors all the time, but this was a unique version that drew me in very well. Nash really reimagines the characters into some awesome and fun to read scenes that are original feeling to me. I really loved that she kept Poppy very much as a bookworm and built from there. It made me feel as if I was visiting a grown up version of one of my absolute favorite Disney movies of all. I will of course be back for more retellings soon I hope from Byrd Nash.

So I really enjoyed the first book in this series so I was excited to start the second one especially as it's beauty and the beast and that is my favourite fairytale so high expectations. Maybe that's where I went wrong though having high expectations.
It was good but it just wasn't amazing.
The dad loses a game of cards and as the story goes he trades his daughter away for a rose to the beast. His daughter take charge of their own fates. Lily becomes the housekeeper at the manor and Poppy beigns reading magic books and becomes his secrety. Rose then begins to work magic in his garden. She is going to be the key to unravel the curse that is on him.
Although as we all know it's never simple.
If you enjoy retellings and fairytales and magic and little bit of historical romance this is your book.

I love fairytale retellings and this beauty and the beast rendition is I do believe my favorite. When Lily, Ruth and poppy‘s father sets out to steal a perfect rose from A private garden of a man who is referred to as the beast or monster, he finds himself comfortably sipping drinks and playing cards with him. Only to gamble his daughters away and after they resign to doing it this is when the adventure begins. There is compassion, kindness and even romance in this fairytale retelling of beauty and the beast I do think for many reasons this one is my favorite. I received this as an ark reader and thought it would be like so many other retelling, but this one is in no way like the other maybe the skeleton but the meat and crux of the plot is it. It was so freaking good I loved it!

Price of a Rose: A Beauty & Beast Tale (Historical Fantasy Fairytale Retellings #2) by Byrd Nash

The second book by Byrd Nash in the Fairytale Retelling Series. In this book we get to see a new version of Beauty and the Beast. Beast has three Beauty's instead of one. Byrd Nash has a certain way of retelling the fairytales.

Sir Griffin has found himself in a bit of a dilemma. He now has a debt to receive from Mr. Parker. His three daughters. The quote I chose for Sir Griffin is: “Do not remove anything from the grounds of Thorn Hall. I shall know if you do.”

Lily is the eldest Parker daughter at the age of 25. She is soon to be married and will leave her sisters behind. When she learns what went down between her father and Sir Griffin, she goes to see what she could do to get out of it. The quote I chose for Lily is: “I don’t know. I imagine a house that size would have one. Give me a few days to get my feet under me, before you visit.”

Rose is the middle Parker daughter at 21. She loves the garden and spends most of her time out there. When she and Lily go to Thorn Hall she finds the roses. She is the only one who has seen Sir Griffin. The quote I chose for Rose is: “Why be a domestic? We may be daughters of a city-man in trade, but our position in society is not so low.”

Poppy is the youngest Parker sister at 14. She's too young to be married so her sisters try to find what she could do to pay off her part of the debt. When her father questions where the oldest are she tellls him. The quote I chose for Poppy is: “Lily is the new housekeeper at Thorn Hall, and Rose is helping Sir Griffin with his garden. They are paying off your gambling debt.”

Highly recommended for Fantasy lovers.

Price of a Rose is an amazing and unique retelling of Beauty and the Beast. From the moment I started reading, the story captivated me; I had to find out how the story ended. While it is a retelling, there are some elements that felt completely new. Having the sisters, each with their own gifts and talents, gave the story a whole new dynamic. I loved it. It wasn't your usual retelling.

The characters each had something loveable about them. I probably could talk endlessly about them, but I'm going to summarize and say they are well written, and have their own purposes in the story. I wish this book was a series just about these characters. I want to know more about them and their lives. The youngest sister has a lot to her that I think would be interesting to read about.

The magic element to the story was done differently than most of the stories I have read. It was far more imaginative and thought out. I would have loved to explore the magic system more.

The writing was great, easy to read, and kept me interested in the book. I plan to read more by this author. I can't begin to express how much I enjoyed this book.

Anyone who enjoys fairytale retellings should give this book a read. It is clean, while there is romance there, it isn't in your face or offensive. I honestly think the romance took a backseat to the relationship between the sisters and the magic aspect. There is so much to like about this book.

I received an ARC of this book for free, and I am voluntarily leaving this review.

A fun novella with some nice twists on the old Beauty and the Beast.

Having read one of Byrd's books before, I was delighted when the opportunity came up to be an ARC reader for their latest book.

Set in Woodross England in 1890, we join the three Parker sisters, Lily, Rose and Poppy who are given to the Beast of this story after their father gambles them away to him.

Written in third person, we witness how all of the sisters play a part in helping the Beast,Sir Griffin, with his curse. With a mixture of romance, intrigue, magic and mystery, the story feels nicely and I felt engaged for most of the story.

One of the highlights for me was the sisters themselves. Not only do all of them have a pivotal role in the story but they are all their own person. This allowed for me to get invested in all of them rather than just one. Sir Griffin was a delightful brand of grumpy, reminding me of a slightly more sour version of the Disney Beast.

One thing that I was disappointed in was how the romance felt rushed. It not only felt Insta love but it felt like we were missing large parts of the relationship development.

Overall, this was a delightful read and one I will be revisiting in the future. I feel that this would be a great introduction to the fairytale sub-genre and would recommend this to anyone who is wanting to give it to go.

After reading Dance of Hearts by Byrd Nash, I didn’t think I could love a book more. Well, I was wrong. Price of a Rose is spellbinding and pulled me in to the point that I felt I was the main character. I was living the life of Rose and I didn’t want it to end. I truly couldn’t put this book down. I was up almost all night to finish reading it. And that’s something I don’t really do anymore considering I have to be at work at 8 AM. But it was SO WORTH THE LACK OF SLEEP!!! I must admit, Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney fairytale of all time, but this put such a spin on the story that I think I love it more than the original. And that’s me being 100% honest and something I never imagined I would say. There is love and a happily ever after to this story, but with so many twists and turns I never could have seen this ending coming. Byrd once again sends us back into the 1800’s with a third person retelling that is reminiscent of the 1991 animated film. It’s a very short story but the attention to details and the characters keep you entranced and feeling like it’s you. I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK ENOUGH! Please, please, please give this book a read.

Price of a Rose: A Beauty & Beast Tale is the second book in the Historical Fantasy Fairytale Retellings series by Byrd Nash. I have read most of Ms. Nash’s other books now and I can honestly say that this is definitely my favourite of them all (so far).
As the title would suggest, this is a historical fantasy and an original retelling of the classic fairytale, Beauty & the Beast. The story is so wonderfully woven - with magic, enchantments, curses, beasts, fairies, mystery, danger, hidden agendas, a little humour, a wager, a game, and full of rich historical details.
Byrd Nash certainly knows how to tell an enchanting story- as she easily pulled me into her ‘world’ on the very first page- and had me captivated the whole way through. I loved her characters and was completely invested in them and the outcome of the story. I also loved all the little twists she added to make the story uniquely hers.
I was so taken with the world she created, that the story ended before I was ready to leave. Now I can’t wait to see what she does next. I need her next book like yesterday.

Thank you, Byrd Nash!

I loved this sweet romance and retelling of Beauty and the Beast set in a Victorian England in 1890. This is a really original and unique take on a well known and loved fairytale. With a mix of historical romance, fairytale fantasy and sweet romance this story had me happily turning the pages and I read this novella in one sitting. This was an enjoyable and lighthearted read with plenty of humour in the narrative and the storyline was a twist on the traditional tale as old as time. Three sisters have to intervene so they can determine their own fate when their father loses a game of cards to the local recluse, Sir Griffin Garrick. Lily, the oldest is not afraid of hard work and so takes over as his housekeeper, Rose loves the outdoors and so works in his forgotten garden whilst the youngest, Poppy acts as his secretary. The three sisters find the reclusive’s house strange as it’s full of books on magic and rooms that keep moving. Out of the three women it is Rose who could be the key to unraveling Griffin’s curse but first he must recognise what is real and what is fairy magic. I loved the descriptive narrative and wonderful world building throughout this novella and it made me feel immersed in the story. The storyline flows well and the characters come alive due to the authors vivid descriptions of them. A lovely heartwarming and engaging read.

I really loved this book; it is a Victorian romance retake of the childhood fairy tale Beauty and the beast.
The story is centered around three girls, Lily, Rose and Poppy and Rose’s romance with a wealthy rude beast, Sir Griffin. Their father, obsessed with a rose called Mab’s perfection attempts to steal it from Sir Griffin, and later loses all his three daughters to him in a gamble for the rose.
The three daughters take up work in Sir Griffin’s household to pay off their debts, Lily becomes the official housekeeper, Rose takes charge of the garden work and Poppy becomes his unwarranted secretary.
But Rose starts falling for Sir Griffin and the beast also softens towards her. But there are obstacles for their romance to succeed and the curse on the house and Sir Griffin to be lifted.
This is a very charming story and has all the elements of the fairy tale intact. The beast is rude, the house has its magical charms, the garden holds the magic flowers and the library has the magical books.
But unlike the fairy tale the book has three sisters instead of one, and then there is a deceptive fairy magic which is at work to blind Sir Griffin from seeing his true love.
I enjoy books from Byrd Nash, it has a dash of the Victorian romance twist to the fairy tales and it is a feast to read. Looking forward to more from this author.

A house built in 1628 that housed 10 generations of a noble family; a woman wearing a bustle; a mother wearing the outdated hairstyle with a lot of curls. I guess this means the story is set around 1890 in Victorian England. If it had been in the real world and not one in a world of magic.

Sir Griffin is cursed and now looks like a beast and cannot leave his estate One night he catches a man trying to steal a rosebush. He invites him in and over a cardgame the man gambles away a daughter. Upon returning home his eldest daughter sets off to straighten things with the nobleman but ends up being hired as a housekeeper. Before the grumpy beast blinks his eyes both sisters invade his estate too.

The author aims to retell a famous faitytale in a novella fit for 12 years and older. It is a simple, very humorous tale with a hint of romance but no graphic details. And it is not following the Disney version so enough surprises. Like the toll the curse had on animals.

Of course the bottom-line of the original fairytale and also this adaption is that love makes the adored look not ugly anymore. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder isn't it.

Well written. 4 stars

Recency era retelling of Beauty and the Beast where three strong willed young women come to the rescue of a rather bewildered Beast. Despite winning their services in a bet, he hardly knows what to make of the three women who suddenly turn up at his doorstep, one taking over as housekeeper, one taming his gardens, and the third determined to unlock the mysterious magic books in the library. Lots of funny moments in this one as well - especially with the beautiful Cymbeline Amaranth vying desperately for the Beast's hand.

This is a sweet retelling that is very faithful to both the regency era setting and the fairytale roots of the story. The magic is woven in very deftly and the romance kind of sneaks up up on you. It is easy to forget it is a magical tale until the magic gets mischievous. One of the things I really liked about this retelling was that there was no kidnapping or keeping anyone against their will. No matchmaking household staff trying to force a romance.

Book 2 in the Historical Fantasy Fairytale Retellings, but both are standalone stories.

Robert Nathaniel Parker is a man who tries to get what he wants, but he is seldom successful and his run of bad luck continues when he is caught trying to steal a rose bush from a neighbouring landowner, one who is known locally as being a beast of a man, but when he is invited in to see the master, he is treated as a guest and offered wine and a game of cards, just as he seems to be winning, he bets his daughters against this rose bush, however, his luck doesn’t hold yet again and he loses the bet, now he just has to tell his three daughters Lily, Rose and Poppy about the situation. As usual, he leaves it up to his eldest to break the bad news, so she tells her other sisters and they work out a plan to uphold the results of their fathers mistake, but in such a way as the rest of the villagers don’t suspect the truth of the situation.

The next day, Lily and Rose go to see the owner of the mansion and while Lily goes in to see the beast himself, she agrees to be his housekeeper in the time between then and when she leaves to be married, reluctantly the beastly man agrees, but without knowing that he is a Parker, as she goes to introduce herself to the household and take a look around the enchanting of not deteriorating interior, the master goes outside and finds Rose in the garden. Rose is obsessed with the outdoors and sees beauty and intrigue in the dilapidated gardens, so when she is approached by the master of the house, she introduces herself and her agreement with him ends up being that she shall work in the garden to restore it to its previous beauty which is no laughing matter as it is in as bad of a state as the house.

As time goes on and the two sisters get on with their jobs in the house, their youngest sister Poppy makes the acquaintance of the master and when caught in his library and seeing that he is having troubles writing his letters, Poppy ends up being his secretary, but she is using that as a front purely to read his books, especially the ones to do with magic to try and remove the curse. The house contains many secrets and as the sisters continue to stay around the estate, experiencing them first hand in some cases, can they work out how to break the curse, or will an unexpected visitor derail all their attempts at restoring happiness to the grand estate and it’s master? This is a sweet retelling of beauty and the beast full of romance, magic and mystery.
