Evil Dead Rise

Powered by Reelgood

Jake Gyllenhaal and Dar Salim star in the new Guy Ritchie film, The Covenant, while Owen Wilson does his best soothing Bob Ross impression for the IFC film Paint, both of which are among this week’s hotly anticipated movies that are new on VOD.

If you’re looking for some scares, check out Evil Dead Rise, the fifth film in the Evil Dead franchise. In the new film, the Deadites have been summoned to an apartment building in L.A. after two teenagers find a set of records containing an incantation that summoned them. The demons end up possessing the teens’ mother, a woman named Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland), who proceeds to try and possess and kill her kids and her sister Beth (Lily Sullivan) who desperately wants to figure out how to reverse the incantation. Come for the demonic spirits, stay until you can pinpoint Bruce Campbell’s voice cameo as a man on one of the records that summoned the Deadites.

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

Paint

The new movie Paint starring Owen Wilson is not really about Bob Ross, but it’s not not about Bob Ross either. In the film, Wilson plays Carl Nargle, the soft-voiced host of a Vermont painting show whose popularity starts to dwindle when a flashier new painter named Ambrosia (Ciara Renee) arrives at the station. Adding some color to the comedy palette in the film are supporting actors Stephen Root, Michaela Watkins, and Wendi McLendon-Covey.

Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant

For a movie with Guy Ritchie’s actual name in the title, Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant might be the least Guy Ritchie-ish film he’s made, with the director’s signature fast-paced action-comedy style being traded in for more serious thrills. Jake Gyllenhaal stars in the film as Army sergeant John Kinley who hires a local Afghan named Ahmed (Dar Salim) to interpret for him while he’s stationed in the country. After Ahmed saves Kinley’s life, Kinley returns to the U.S., only to learn that Ahmed never received the visa he was promised by the Army to leave Afghanistan. So Kinley makes it his mission to fulfill the covenant between them and get Ahmed out of the country and away from the Taliban who are threatening his life.
