‘Swap Shop’
Swap Shop is Netflix’s latest attempt to mimic the low stakes pleasure of basic cable institutions like Storage Wars and Pawn Stars. This reality show follows a crew of revolving “pickers” in America’s Appalachian region (primarily Tennessee), all of whom tune-in to a daily radio program called “Swap Shop,” a show that alerts listeners about garage sales, yard sales, and the like. You won’t find any of the high-falutin’ aspirations of shows like Antiques Roadshow here; instead of watching people try to ascertain the value of rare family heirlooms, viewers follow a colorful group of small business owners who spend their days rummaging, socializing, and rummaging some more. It’s the perfect show to watch while you’re hungover, or folding laundry; you’ll laugh a bit, you’ll learn a bit, and it doesn’t matter in the slightest if you fall asleep and wake up 45 minutes later.
