‘Stutz’
I’ll admit, I was skeptical when I first heard that Jonah Hill had directed and starred in a documentary in which he interviewed his therapist. Surely that could be nothing but self-indulgent and uncomfortable, right? And while Stutz, now streaming on Netflix, may be both indulgent and uncomfortable, it’s also raw, honest, and deeply moving. Hill uses his celebrity platform to further de-stigmatize the societal taboo of therapy and to provide a much-less-expensive option for those of us who can’t afford the Hollywood rates. He sets an example of how to be vulnerable, exposing some of the most painful parts of himself. And the genuine love and connection between Hill and his therapist, Phil Stutz, moved me to tears. If that’s not worth a watch, what is?
