‘One Day At A Time’ Season 2
Netflix’s remake of the timely 1970s/80s family sitcom got rave reviews in its first season for showing a diverse and complex look at American family life. Now that’s it’s back for season 2, you’ll be relieved to know the show is just as good as, if not better than, you remember. The Cuban-American family at its heart is delivering broad sitcom laughs mixed with some real modern-life stuff, and with performers like the legendary Rita Moreno onboard, it’s impossible not to walk away delighted. Even the best, funniest topical humor can often feel either smug or lecturing, if not both. One Day at a Time has (very quickly) figured out a way for smart, topical comedy to exist in the Trump Era while emphasizing heart and empathy over having all the answers. The Alvarezes are living on the same minefield we all are, and they’re figuring it out bit by bit. What’s more quintessentially American in 2018 than that?
