‘Little Woods’
Nia DaCosta’s debut feature Little Woods packs a thrill a minute. While it may take place in the mundane plains of North Dakota, the film is anything but dull. As Ollie (Tessa Thompson) nears the end of her parole, her sister Deb (Lily James) poses a new issue. Deb’s pregnant, and needs money for the baby. But neither of them have the funds. Ollie’s back to the drug dealing that got her arrested in the first place. The pair eventually draft a plan to cross the Canadian border, where maternity healthcare is free. Little Woods weaves a thriller where the antagonist is the U.S. healthcare system — and it’s terrifying.
