‘Knight And Day’
Tom Cruise is riding high these days, with Top Gun: Maverick dominating at the box office and audiences salivating over the trailer for Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning – Part One. It’s not so difficult for some of us to remember a time, though, when Cruise’s image and reputation were in extreme peril (think the ill-advised Valkyrie, think the infamous Oprah couch jump, think the nearly career-killing Scientology exposé). How did Cruise pull himself out of that nosedive? By teaming up with Cameron Diaz to make Knight And Day, a combo rom-com action-adventure flick directed by James Mangold. It’s a borderline ridiculous — actually, scratch that, it is an OVER-THE-TOP ridiculous popcorn movie extravaganza, one that allows both Cruise and Diaz to display all the tools that made them both A-list movie stars. We’re talking wall-to-wall displays of their high-wattage charisma, cartoonishly wide smiles, and (let’s be honest) perfectly-toned bodies. Like all films of its era, some of the CGI hasn’t aged too well, but look past that and you’ll find yourself a rip-roaring good time that’s over-and-done-with in just over 100 minutes (not including credits).
