‘Chimp Crazy’
Netflix’s Tiger King wasn’t for everybody, but if you were captivated by the heartbreaking insanity of the buzzy 2020 doc, Chimp Crazy is for you. Directed by Tiger King’s Eric Goode, HBO’s four-episode docuseries centers on exotic animal broker Tonia Haddix, a woman who refers to herself as the “Dolly Parton of chimps.” Haddix’s love for chimpanzees leads to a wild game of cat and mouse with PETA that’s as unpredictable as it is unsettling. Like Tiger King, the endless array of eccentric characters and unbridled lunacy make for enthralling television, but due to the subject matter, Chimp Crazy isn’t an easy watch. It is, however, the type of show that’ll stay with you long after viewing, offering a personal, evocative peek behind the curtain into the hidden terrain of a controversial subculture.
