‘Betty’
Betty, an HBO extension series for Crystal Moselle’s hit indie Skate Kitchen, follows a group of women in yet another male-dominated field: skateboarding. Betty is in the same vein as Jonah Hill’s Mid90s, or the Oscar-nominated doc Minding the Gap. This time, though, we finally get to see the struggles of being a girl skater in NYC — trouble’s always lurking around the corner. And yet, there’s nothing that a skate sesh can’t fix. Even without the vibrant ensemble storylines, the show’s fun to watch for the exquisite outfits and skating tricks. It’s also pretty short: at six, half-hour long episodes, it’ll be a quick binge. Betty is a breezy summer show with an extremely lovable cast.
