‘Amulet’
Amulet is the terrifying, spellbinding feature debut for Romola Garai, a Golden Globe nominated actress turned writer-director. Here, she presents a story about the evil that men do to women, and the karmic retribution that they must pay for their sins. Tomaz (Alec Secareanu) is a soldier from Eastern Europe seeking refuge in London when a terrible fire rips through the hovel he’s been squatting at. He’s saved by a nun (Imelda Staunton), who agrees to provide him food shelter in exchange for him applying his handyman skills in her decrepit home, which is also occupied by an elderly female tenant who he never sees, but frequently hears howling and growling. As you might expect, things don’t go well when the two finally meet. Kill List and Possession vibes abound.
