Meryl Streep & Martin Short Avoided Romance Rumors With This Tactical Move at the Emmys

Meryl Streep and Martin Short might be trying their best to avoid fueling romance rumors after they skipped out on walking the 2024 Emmys red carpet together.

Streep, 75, and Short, 74, have been shutting down dating rumors since earlier this year after a series of cozy-looking outings. The duo first sparked rumors when they sat together at the 2024 Golden Globes which a rep for Short shut down at the time.

Speculation ramped up again in August when they were spotted holding hands at the premiere of Only Murders in the Building, even posing for photos together on the red carpet.

However, it seemed they weren’t taking any chances at the Emmys as the co-stars walked the red carpet separately. They did, however, sit together inside the award show, sharing many sweet laughs and whispers throughout the show.

Streep and Short were both nominated for their performances on Only Murders in the Building, in which they play love interests. Streep was nominated for for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Loretta Durkin but that award went to The Bear’s Liza Colón-Zayas instead.

 Meanwhile, Short received a nod for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal of Oliver Putnam. The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White won the award for the second year in a row.

Streep was married to Don Gummer for 45 years before her reps confirmed in October 2023 that the couple had split six years earlier. The couple are parents to Henry, 44, and daughters Mamie, 41, Grace, 38, and Louisa, 33.

Short was married to  was married to Nancy Dolman from 1980 until her death from in August 2010. The couple shared three children: daughter Katherine, 40, and sons Oliver, 38, and Henry, 35.
