In A Discovery of Witches, historian and witch by birth Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer) has abstained from practicing magic. Instead, she focuses on her alchemy research. While deep in the archives at the University of Oxford’s library, though, she unknowingly ends up in possession of a powerful book about the origins of supernatural creatures … a book that could ruin the lives of vampires, witches, and demons if it falls into the wrong hands. To thwart any threats, she teams up with the enigmatic Matthew (Matthew Goode), a vampire and professor. But will their newfound love get in the way of everything they’re fighting against?
If you’ve followed Diana and Matthew through the realms of A Discovery of Witches, here are more fantastical shows to keep you on the edge of your broom — er, seat.
Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches
When a neurosurgeon with newfound powers searches for her birth family, the Mayfairs, she stumbles upon a dark legacy and a hidden world filled with supernatural beings. Starring Alexandra Daddario (White Lotus), Tongayi Chirisa (iZombie), and Jack Huston (House of Gucci), Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches was created by Michelle Ashford (Masters of Sex) and Esta Spalding (On Becoming a God in Central Florida).
The Magicians
When twentysomething Quentin Coldwater enters graduate school at a college that specializes in magic, he believes the fantasy world of his favorite books was a myth. But soon, he learns that not only is the magical land of Fillory oh-so-very real, it also may pose a threat to humankind. Based on Lev Grossman’s best-selling book series of the same name The Magicians stars Jason Ralph (Those People), Arjun Gupta (Love Beats Rhymes), and Hale Appleman (American Horror Story). It was created by John McNamara (Trumbo) and Sera Gamble (Supernatural).
Cursed
Based on the novel by Frank Miller and Tom Wheeler, Cursed follows a mysterious outcast and sorceress named Nimue as she flees her village with a legendary sword in pursuit of her destiny: becoming the dark magic summoner the Lady of the Lake. The series, an epic reimagining of Arthurian legend, stars Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why) and Devon Terrell (Barry).
