Olympic rankings vary depending on where you look at them. Some use gold medals to rank, then silver for draws, then bronze; some use a bold sum of any medal types ('Sum' column below). I like to give a weight to each medal type, with a bigger one on gold, as harder to obtain (requiring more efforts, or more won games to achieve). This e.g. ranks down a bit Australia, currently equalling Great-Britain, with respect to the default ranking proposed on olympics.com #Paris2024 #olympics #5continents #sportsfirst The last column shows the fraction of the weighted-score a country has with respect to that directly ahead of it.

Have we reached the point in sports where coming second and third dont count. Clearly the medal table now ranks the number of Gold medals and no credit for the accumulative effort of collecting silver and bronze medals. So, if a team came 1st, 2nd and 3rd to collect 3 medals i.e. "Team Work", its only the athlete who received Gold that ranks overall. Team GB got a total of 65 medals which in my books puts them in 3rd place. I think Ukraine should be top for winning 3 Gold for battling against the odds, that would stick it to the Russians. https://lnkd.in/gaU7xvtT

1984 Olympic 2x Bronze medalist (200 & 4x100m) Thomas Jefferson and I had a friendly debate. Which US Olympic team had the most medals 1984 or 2016? This answer is a little complicated. We called our in-house track and field statition and historian Duffy Mahoney for this answer. He said 1984 won 40 medals but they put an astrik by it because Russia boycotted the 1984 Olympic Games. 2016 the U.S. competed against Russia and the rest of the world and we won 32 medals. Technically 1984 has the most but they didn’t compete against the whole world.
