On a Friday night, many Austinites feel the siren call of Barton Springs, the vibrant, giant, freshwater pool that stays at a brisk 68 degrees all year long. The springs double as Austin’s sexiest dating pool, so don’t hesitate to put your towel down next to your crush. New podcast episode! 🎧 All about embracing the slowness of August and the life-changing freedom I've gained as a freelancer. ✨ [Link in comments!] In the latest episode of the Cruel Summer Book Club podcast, I reflect on how I've intentionally made the month of August a time to focus on travel, rest, nature, and connection, year after year. As a freelance writer, I've been able to reclaim my summers and prioritize life over work during this fleeting time of year. Over the past few Augusts, I've embarked on solo road trips to National Parks, traveled to Europe, and spent extended periods in my home state of California — all to unplug, recharge, and simply "be" without the pressure of deadlines and self-improvement. NO in August: 👎🏼 Packing in my schedule 👎🏼 Extra work 👎🏼 Taking on projects just for the money 👎🏼 Self-improvement goals of any kind 👎🏼 Anything I don't REALLY want to do YES in August: 🙌🏼 Being offline 🙌🏼 Going outside 🙌🏼 Mindful, no-tech walks 🙌🏼 Extra sleep 🙌🏼 Being present with my loved ones I encourage each of you to find small ways to savor the sweetness of this season before it slips away. I wrote about embracing August, and how I intentionally cherish the most fleeting month year after year. [Link in comments] I’m on my annual summer sojourn away from Austin. In 2022, I took a full month off, went to Europe, and left my laptop back at home. In 2023, I hightailed it to California, my home state, and went hiking in Mammoth, wine tasting in Paso Robles, and sea otter-seeking in Carmel. This August, I’m back in California, connecting with family, friends, and trees. I’m grateful for my fourth summer as a freelancer, which allows me to choose the closest thing an American girl can to that fully out of office, not even looking at my emails, don’t talk to me before I’ve had my Aperol Spritz-summer that many of our European sisters enjoy.
