It was fun to look back and reflect on my first summer internship experience over two decades ago for The Switchboard’s recent edition on learnings from summer jobs and internships. Thanks Julia Levy for the feature. My first summer internship was on a manufacturing floor at GE. I was a 19-year-old kid there to help make the jobs of individuals who had worked on the line for 30+ years easier. I quickly realized that getting work done depended on first building trust and credibility through non-work-related conversations, and over time, achieving small wins to eventually be trusted to drive sustainable change. Building trust still remains an integral part of driving change in everything I do, as it lays the foundation for effective collaboration, meaningful relationships, and sustainable success. i suggest that companies should consider offering both paid and unpaid internships, as the experience gained in the informal business sector is often not considered valuable.
