The Summer Games has showcased the very best of athletic competition and we should herald the organisers for delivering one of the best multi-event multi-day international events yet. It will surely break records for audience viewing and social engagement but as compelling as the content is this would not be possible without some key technologies working on a wider scale than ever attempted. The backbone for the host production is IP with more signals than ever before processed in and transmitted from the Cloud. IP enabled significant remote contribution from Paris, seemingly without hitch, even though the source was the highest quality, most challenging UHD HDR. Although many of the sporting and broadcasting facilities are designed to be temporary, these Summer Games will leave a legacy as a model for live production going forward. We joined forces with Virgin Media O2 to redefine gaming experiences at Comic Con 2023 🎮. Thanks to a dedicated 5G network slice, competitors playing an augmented reality esport in the UK were able to play in real-time with teams located in both the US and Korea! The 5G showcase saw the UK HADO game run on Virgin Media O2’s 5G standalone network, which enabled remote play and live broadcasting thanks to a network slice that offered guaranteed connectivity and capacity for teams to compete against each other in different global locations. With thousands of visitors at the event, the network slice enabled the HADO game to benefit from an isolated part of the public network with specific requirements on bandwidth, latency, and jitter – Ensuring a seamless gaming experience for competitors and also enabling the live broadcast of the games to thousands of viewers worldwide.
