Like most people in Inventory Management, I spend a portion of every day trying to answer the question “where’s part number [insert SKU here] and how much do we actually have versus what the WMS says”. It’s why my work clothes are so dirty. In an old warehouse with antiquated ventilation, looking for your stuff and accurately counting it means getting dirty.
The plus side is I get my steps in and keep my mental math up, since I do almost all my computations by hand.
Even if your warehouse is at the industry standard ideal of 97.5% accuracy, you’re still going to be looking for the other 2.5%. Any way to eliminate the steps and the time it takes to track down missing SKUs is a benefit to your organization. Just because I personally enjoy cycle counting and searching for missing and misplaced items doesn’t mean that I’m not aware this is waste. Stuff ideally shouldn’t be lost.
It’s more profitable to be able to focus on the demand planning side of Inventory Management. The Inventory Control side of Warehousing is a necessary evil, as much as I enjoy it on a personal level.
