Reflecting on the RFK #SuperBowlAd this morning, as both a #marketer and a #history enthusiast. I initially found it to be a stroke of genius, redoing the iconic JFK ad from the 60s (original below). It seemed to pay homage to his family legacy while offering a fresh perspective, akin to a Trump-esque 'Make America Great Again' message, albeit from a different vantage point. However, my perception shifted when I witnessed the backlash on social and the subsequent apology from RFK. It became apparent that while the ad may have resonated with those familiar with the campaign or history buffs like myself, its impact on the family's emotions was unforeseen, especially considering they were blindsided by its release. In the end, the real lesson that will live on in #marketing, #publicrelations, and #advertising textbooks for a different reason. Despite the considerable investment—reportedly $7M for the spot alone—the ROI appears dubious at best. The ad's polarizing reception underscores the importance of thorough audience research and sensitivity, lest the costs outweigh the benefits. What do Taylor Swift and NRL in Vegas tells us about comms? 1. Excite your core base with a once in a lifetime opportunity. 2. Build fan loyalty by taking on sacred cows (rugby league will never work in America, what’s the point of re-recording all your albums?) 3. Have something to say and say it regularly through your best channels. 4. Build your audience via both traditional and non traditional channels. 5. In the case of the NRL, leverage your media partnerships to ensure widespread awareness and record ratings, the biggest ever for round 1. 6. In the case of Taylor Swift, produce something of such quality and scarcity (millions register for approx 600K public tickets) that tradition media end up producing live blogs and coverage, knowing that millions are interested. While your company might not be as big as Taylor Swift or the NRL there are some key lessons: 1. Position yourself strongly and have something to say in public of interest to people that gets them talking. 2. Challenge sacred cows and see if you can give the public what they want or something they haven’t thought about. 3. The NBA media deal negotiations are a fascinating insight into what the leagues are looking for in a media deal as the world continually gets more digital. Linear television and who can get the most people no longer appear to be the primary focus of these deals, especially the NBA. This article lays out why Comcast is such an important and interesting player in this battle for the final spot. Instead, the focus is now on collecting as much data on the consumer as possible. That is what streaming services provide. The NFL got tons of data from the TNF deal and will continue getting data from the wild card game on Peacock. This data is worth more than a normal person may think on the business level. Amazon and ESPN/Disney already appear to have deals in place for the next NBA media deal, so it is between WB Discovery/TNT and Comcast/NBC/Peacock. TNT is the traditional broadcaster who, while having the streaming service, does not have the financial power or the data-gathering of Comcast/NBC/Peacock. The latter, meanwhile, has a greater ability to collect data, has more money and is much more stable in terms of ownership. The results of this WB Discovery vs Comcast war will showcase where the future of sports broadcasting is heading. Keep your eyes out for what happens.

The big game is HERE! What are you more excited about? The game itself? Commercials? Halftime show with Usher? Or Taylor Swift sightings? I can’t believe the amount of distain toward Travis & Taylor’s relationship & the attention she gets during the game. They seem happy so how it anyone else’s business. If you’re a football fan, you should be celebrating her. She’s opening up your sport to a larger audience that may have never cared before. Little girls are not only interested in Taylor but learning the whole game. This new audience is bringing higher TV viewing audiences & revenue streams to the economy. Coming from a marketing standpoint, I would be doing backflips to increase my organic audiences at those rates. I can’t pick between Taylor’s boyfriend or Arizona native golden 49er, Purdy. We need to be in the creative business and make things that people want to watch and we need to make it for many different consumer segmentations. This is not television where we make a piece of vanilla and hope that everybody on earth wants it. Dun-kings. https://lnkd.in/e6iJbjwp Also, Uber Eats and StateFarm also received high marks from me. However, there were many misses. Temu and Homes.com were two that stuck out. The Homes.com ads were entertaining (the subsequent ones much less entertaining than the one prior), but I don't understand their messaging - it wasn't cohesive, nor does it resonate with me. Pat McAfee said it best today: "You can see why I refuse to work with ad agencies; these folks are terrible at their jobs. They're spending other people's money, 'We're so creative,' no you're not. They suck, they all suck. Sorry, not all of them. I'm sure there's one or two ad agency reps that are good at their job, but everyone else sucks. They're bad. They're dumb. They lack creativity; they have no idea who humans are." I agree with Pat; if you want exceptional, creative results, you must partner with a niche boutique firm.
