THE challenge is not so much getting plants to grow in vertical locations. We have been doing that since 2008. No, the big one is channelling funding into our industry. There are some sticks. Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), the Urban Greening Factor (UGF) and to an extent, Environment and Social Gain (ESG) But there may be a carrot or two on offer. Providing value. Being seen to be involved in greening cities and encouraging biodiversity. Being seen to be pushing the boundaries. Maybe some brands should get involved. It’s a thought! In the last post, I discussed how we aim for the bioregional establishment of regenerative economies over a 10-year period while developing ourselves, Smart Green Group as a company, our extended family of companies under the House of SGG, and the local communities in place, in western developed countries/economies -Links to multiple supporting content in post- This is a regenerative development model for shifting Western economies to a more localised regenerative economy using the Neo-liberal capitalist system against itself while profiting ourselves to build our own generational wealth across all the capitals for resilience facing an unpredictable future To extend the thinking on this model for international development work in less ‘developed’ countries or when working with the global First People, including our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island communities here in Australia, it is not morally right to structure ourselves in equity deals, ownership, and profit above an honest days pay for an honest days work All of the previous post structure basically applies with equity considerations and the addition of leveraging government and philanthropic grants, impact investment, and local economy-specific financial and legal structures What is much more important is a focus on the first line of work in the system, the mindset we hold ourselves going into the work as the core development team Here, we can really model our work on living systems, leaning into the natural process of regenerating ecosystems A lot of current development work is approached much like how we approach everything, now even including green technology and finance like carbon credits to ‘regenerate’ landscapes. For the Econnect and Foodshare applications, here are some example features I will include in the social platform area during early prototyping: - Sustainability Forum - A message board where community members can discuss local environmental issues, events and solutions. This could showcase before integrating true conversations. - Map of Gardens/Projects - Interactive maps displaying sample plotted community gardens and restoration sites as placeholders until real geotagged contributors can be added. - Photo Challenges - Prompt users to "upload" pictures meeting weekly nature/food waste themed challenges with placeholder stock images as submissions. - Spotlight Interviews - Mock written profiles of community members leading regenerative efforts like land trusts, with call-outs but no live interactivity. - Green Groups - List sample sustainable living, permaculture or political action groups as examples of aligned organizations users may want to join locally. - Help Wanted - Post generic task templates community members could contribute virtually like nature education, food drives, park cleanup days to be populated later. The goal at this early stage is demonstrating potential avenues for real-world connection and collaboration once the technical integration of user profiles, locational data etc is built out more robustly. My focus today is on the #ORBMember business, and mindset movement, Think like a Tree Founder Sarah Spencer 🌳 is the author of the book Think like a Tree: a natural principles guide to life. She now speaks and trains widely on regenerative practice to bring nature-inspired approaches to a wide range of audiences. This includes supporting individuals, leaders and groups. The Think like a Forest programme offers training for businesses and organisations to create regenerative transformation. These organisations are shown how to align with principles of Life, such as healthy growth, adaptability, resilience and purpose. Think like a Tree is incredibly agile in its responsible operations as it has been "actively designed from the outset as a regenerative business, inspired by the success of living ecosystems." A comprehensive agreement on all aspects of regenerative living guides all the facilitators. The home base of Think like a Tree and Think like a Forest is a 19 acre permaculture-designed smallholding in south Derbyshire with solar energy, water capture, food gardens, wildlife nurturing and woodlands in the National Forest. The company uses local community woodland social enterprise Whistlewood Common as a key training venue. Sarah was a co-founder of Whistlewood and active supporter of this regenerative project which has planted 3500 trees and created a beautiful straw-bale eco training venue. The idea of leaving the planet in a better state than we found it is the task that motivates so many of the people I have encountered in the climate innovation ecosystem. However, the challenge of aligning that worthy aim with a business model that can power our everyday lives requires a certain creativity and adaptability on behalf of entrepreneurs, and the investors who help along the way.  Keely Anson and I have taken Collaborative Fund’s Villain Test—a measure of business viability in the eyes of the most profit-driven investors— to understand and support the companies who will define exactly what it means to be a category defining regenerative business. This evolved thesis has led us to support brilliant companies in the last year like Sanctu, Cyanotype Bio and MeliBio who are redefining farming practices in rural Brazil, revitalizing rare plant tissue cells, and creating delicious regenerative honey products.

This is the first article to be published out of forthcoming special issue on the Role of Place in Sustainability with Co-Editors Panikos Georgallis, Irene Henriques, Johanna Mair, and myself.
