It meant working-from-bed until noon somedays, working-from-doctor-lobbies other days, and the normal run-of-course most days. It gave me back hours of commuting time and granted me the ability to share the news at work when it made sense for me. 🚨 Unexpected Roadblocks 🛑 I was excited to re-work my portfolio in this new job search after the layoff but unfortunately I've been told I can't use any of the last 4 years of my work. 💾 Taking a breath this week I've decided this is just an opportunity to showcase what I can do when I have a bit more creative freedom. I'm stoked to be working on: 💻 A plug and play Figma file to allow non-designers to see what their Amazon designs will look like live. 📱 UX Architecture for an App idea based around finding local mountain bikers to ride with. 🍾 Responsive homepage for a favorite beverage of mine. 🚲 Redesigning my non-profit's (Send It Society) entire web presence, giving better UX. 📲 Another big project that I can't really share until we get the provisional patent registered and finalize our NDA. ❓ UX Designers / Hiring Managers: is this a wide enough spread for a portfolio to show? Hey all... JOB OPPORTUNITY !! mini story included_ 2 weeks ago I posted for this role and we made it through interviews in 1 week. I hate dangling 'speed' in front of people bc I know how frustrated people are (this market sucks!), but this truly was a special, refined process. ⚒ Took the brief > presented a stand-out candidate > interviewed over 5 business days > offer! 🙀 It was wild but in the best way! A dream for a great recruiting partnership. But also a > 🎢. And as things go, it wasn't the right timing for this particular candidate. That's okay! 🥁 That means the role is still open, and I gotta fill it. This client has been interviewing for a couple of months, and by now, knows exactly what they are looking for, and are ready to hire yesterday. So here is what we learned we really need from this most recent interview round: 🌟 🌟 🌟 Have you worked at a startup? Have you worked for a big company? I'm a big fan of transparency and empathy in the hiring process like this. It's something we don't see nearly as much as we should in this market. In just a couple of paragraphs you can: 1) Let the hundreds of applicants to your role know that one way or another, they'll receive a response. Applications take both time and effort, so acknowledging you'll be seen is such a positive thing to know as an applicant considering the majority of the time folks receive no response whatsoever to the roles they apply to. 2) Show the thousands of people who will see this post that your company values you as an applicant. One can assume if they value you as an applicant, they'll also value you as an employee and as a customer of theirs too! A little can go a very long way here when it comes to helping you stand out as a company. Well done Jim Turbek and Box!

Thanks to so many of you who just joined me for an awesome chat with 2 alumni from Career Strategy Lab who recently got hired into roles as a Senior UX Researcher and a Lead Product design at Dexcom and Nextdoor! 3 key takeaways: 🗺️ 1) Just like a product needs a roadmap, your CAREER needs a roadmap. Without a roadmap, product teams flail around in chaos – and without a roadmap, you'll flail around when creating your resume, portfolio etc. A roadmap serves as a compass for your career ... and decisions are a LOT easier when you have a compass to guide you! 👥 2) Just like many entrepreneurs "build in public," navigating your career is a lot easier when you do it in community (and not a silo.) The benefit to building in public is that you learn from each other's mistakes, learnings etc. If you create your resume, portfolio, etc, in a silo, you'll second guess everything and get stuck in negative thinking, etc. With a community, you can have the support and collective knowledge of like-minded people who are on a similar journey. 🧠 3) Like startup founders, it's easy to get stuck in your head and overthink everything. The same applies to getting hired! Startup founders are often too close to their own idea! Chances are, you're too close to your resume, portfolio, etc, and you've been overthinking things and NOT considering the "users" (aka recruiters and hiring managers). Eventually, startup founders realize they can move faster and more effectively when they hire the right experts to help them bring their ideas to life – and the same applies to your career! There you have it ... I hope these takeaways were helpful! I polled some team members if they wanted to know how much their peers were making. How do we include distributed / frontline / deskless workers in our ERG and culture efforts? BIG question right now. Some things we're learning from our community: 1. 👥 Make friends on your Compliance & Legal Teams 👥 There are so many different considerations when you're thinking about employees that are exempt vs. non-exempt... frontline vs. HQ... contractor vs. full-time... hourly vs. salaried... the list goes on. As you think about how to include all different types of workers in the culture of inclusion your ERGs are building, make sure you keep your Compliance & Legal Teams looped into the conversation. They can help you see around corners on the greatest opportunities and challenges you might face as you build for your entire workforce. 2. 💬 Involve Distributed Employees in the Conversation 💬 Involve these distributed employees in meetings and planning processes so they can help you be as inclusive as possible. Often, they'll bring up things you may have never considered, simply because you aren't in their shoes. Too often, we find out after-the-fact what they were truly looking to get out of their participation in their company's ERGs. So, pull them in early and you stand to learn a ton that will help your ERG now and into the future. 3. 📹 Hit Record! 📹 Some folks may not be able to make your live events or efforts depending on their schedule and location. They may be on the floor, working in a warehouse, on an overnight shift, or at an office abroad. So, get some quality footage that you can upload to a central, accessible online portal (i.e. intranet, shared drive). If you have the resources, put together a 'highlight reel' of the most impactful takeaways so people can share the knowledge even after it's all done. Bonus tip: You can have a virtual viewing of these highlights or recordings to create moments of togetherness in different pockets of your community. The daily stand-up. This is just one of the many best practices I advocate for in a remote-first, hybrid and/or fully distributed workplace. 15 minutes, sometimes it stretches to 30 but no more. Every day. Ideally scheduled early in the day, but with teams stretching across multiple time zones flexibility is key. I held our HR team stand-up at 6:30 AM Pacific time every day. Why? Most of the team lived on the East Coast. What I found most beneficial: 🚀 It’s a daily touchpoint. It provides connection every day to each of your team members, and it provides connection for you as the leader every day. 🚀 Is someone on the team struggling? You can usually pick up on that quickly and schedule 1:1 time later to course correct. 🚀 In an environment where priorities shift often, it allows for a quick reset if a pivot is needed. 🚀 This daily connection can increase team communication and overall effectiveness. If you don't consider laid-off or unemployed candidates, you'll miss out on great talent. Recruiters receive many applications and use filters like career gaps to narrow them down. However, layoffs often result from cost-cutting, not poor performance. Talented people can be laid off due to team cuts or leave their jobs due to toxic work environments. Don't overlook potential A-Players.
