Is LinkedIn Premium just a giant AI-data scraping exercise that I’m paying for? Its clutter of inept features seem to serve no other purpose than to gather data. They’re of absolutely no use, other than as a reminder of how useless generic AI is. And, possibly, how we’re being used to improve it. 1 Useless ‘top applicant’ job recommendations Here are three jobs LinkedIn Premium thinks I’m going to be a top applicant for. - Bulgarian-speaking copywriter. - Freelance copy writer – musical instrument industry. - And finally, as if it’s doing this to spite me and my 25 years in writing and journalism, Tech writer – intern. Oddly, I didn’t get recommended for the Japanese-speaking copywriter at the place wanting the Bulgarian speaker. 2 Those suggestions at the bottom of people’s posts which initially look like they might be helpful, but then you quickly realise it’s just an AI-driven search asking questions no-one needs the answers to. Three I’ve just seen: - 'Top news from Hay-on-Wye?' (AI’s answer: Hay-on-Wye is currently in the news for its literary significance and unique position on the border between England and Wales.) - 'What impact does gratitude have on professional settings?' (AI’s answer: It fosters a positive work environment, leading to higher employee engagement.) - 'How can a cocktail shaker be useful?' (AI’s answer: a cocktail shaker is used to make drinks.) 3 Rewriting everything with AI Seriously, it’s not good enough. Not even for people who aren’t confident writing. In fact, it’s doing more harm than good. If you trust it to ‘tailor your CV to this job’ or ‘rewrite this message with AI,’ you’re damaging your chances of getting the job or getting your message taken seriously. It makes mistakes, uses cloying, predcitable language and it will not represent you properly. I’d rather read writing with mistakes in it by a human than from the grammatically correct, dead hand of AI.

Why Branded Content Matters. Did you know that 72% of marketers say branded content is more effective than magazine ads? And 69% believe it works better than direct mail and PR. Branded content helps you connect with your audience in a meaningful way. It's not just about selling a product—it's about sharing stories that resonate and build trust. #BrandedContent #Marketing #ContentCreation #Branding #AudienceEngagement

Strategic decision or proofreading accident? Some of the comments in my original post feel it's the former. Here's why I think it's the latter: 1. *It was spelled wrong deliberately.* In other ads, Naked has successfully used deliberate misspellings to great effect. The most immediate example is "Lose wait." This one = brilliant. It effectively uses a well-known phrase, while tackling a call-centre pain point. "Negotiantions"? Not so much, IMO. 2. *It's piggybacking on an inside joke.* Hmmmm. These are only funny if you're on the inside and 'get it'. If you're not, you could potentially be sharing it with a snarky comment about proofreading while rolling your eyes. If there's a joke attached to this, please put me in the loop, because I'm definitely on the outside with this one. 3. *It was done because they knew there would be a reaction and it would increase reach.* I can't argue with the reach part. This has definitely got people talking. (Mostly marketers and writers/editors, though, from the looks of it. LOL!) BUT... Despite Naked's playful brand persona, insurance is a pretty serious business. What does a nonsensical spelling (see point 1) say about the way their underwriting has been done? In a world where companies can be sued over a missing Oxford comma or misused apostrophe (see links in comments), is this not potentially damaging the brand (accidentally, if it was deliberate)? This is where my brain went immediately, but as a niched technical writer, I haven't done B2C marketing for ages. I'm genuinely interested to hear your take, especially if you think this is a deliberate strategic decision. Please educate me in the comments.

Hybrid publishing is increasingly popular with authors because—if you can invest the money & time—you get the advantage of an established publisher's network and systems while retaining more control, earning better royalties, and seeing the publishing process going faster. #authors #writersuniverse #writers #publishing #bookpublishing #coffeeandbooks #publishinghouse #traditionalpublishing #bookroyalties

How to Land High-Paying Freelance Contracts Writing for Textbook Publishers When freelance writers think about writing for publishers, they generally focus on book projects they create and submit, or finding work for hire book projects that are available. And while both of those options are always available, and if done correctly, can pay very well, there is another option if you are interested in making money writing for publishers. I discovered the wonderful world of writing for textbook publishers nearly two decades ago. The Internet as we know it today was still in the early stages of being developed and, back then, it wasn’t uncommon for big textbook publishers to place ads for freelance writers to help on just about every topic from A to Z. I was hired by Macmillan to write a few chapters of a history book and a few months later, they contacted me to see if I was interested in more work. Fast forward to now, and although very few of the big textbook publishers now find the need to place ads, they still use a large group of freelance writers, editors, subject matter experts and proofreaders. (Check out their websites. Most will have a list of current projects and needs posted.) Textbook publishers will pay big bucks for professors, subject matter experts, etc. to create chapters, and sometimes even the entire book. However, in around 50% of those cases, most of the material is “too raw” to use and they end up hiring qualified freelance writers to rewrite and edit the pages into the final product. There are several associations you should check out, including: 1. Textbook and Academic Authors Association Look at the listing for the “author guidelines,” and send an e-mail to one of the editors and ask about freelance opportunities that are available. 2. Association of University Presses There, you will find a directory of 140 University publishing companies. Search through the ones that are of interest to your subject matter and find an e-mail address for the appropriate editor. 3. Publishing Professionals Network At this nonprofit association, you will find lists of both publishers and other outside book-related associations. Check each link very carefully to see if there is something of interest to you. Then, find an e-mail address for that firm’s editor. As a professional freelance writer, you should always be open to new and creative opportunities, and writing for textbook publishers should be high on your list! For more tips on how to make $$ as a freelance writer, head over to Amazon and look for "The Flying Nun, A Light Bulb Moment and Me: 40 Years Making Money As a Freelance Writer (Hey, You Can Do It, Too!)" Keep writing and NEVER give up!
