Recently, Mitchell Rencheck, Ph.D., Senior Research Engineer at EPRI, led a panel discussion on "End-of-Life Management for Wind Turbine Blades" during the Society for the Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering (SAMPE) Conference. The discussion focused on sharing knowledge about practices for managing the end-of-life of wind turbine blades, including decommissioning, downsizing, recycling, repurposing, fostering a circular economy, and addressing barriers and solutions for existing challenges. This discussion also highlighted the importance of and solutions for addressing these challenges and provided an outlook as to how the solutions may change as wind turbine blade innovation continues.

This knowledge helps prevent the development of unrealistic mathematical formulations that fail to replicate experimental results or the natural behavior of these structures. 💡 In our recent research, we investigated the loading rate-dependent energy dissipation of polymer structures fabricated using grayscale masked stereolithography. Additionally, we compared various grading strategies in lattice structures within the linear viscoelastic regime. 🚀 Our findings enhance the understanding of the mechanical behavior of polymer structures in energy absorption and dissipation applications. A New Era for Wind Power: NREL Cracks the Code on Sustainable Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory have made a groundbreaking advancement that could revolutionize wind energy. NREL’s newly developed #PECAN resin allows wind turbine blades to be chemically recycled and reused, offering a #sustainable solution to the growing issue of blade waste. Traditionally, wind turbine blades have a lifespan of around 20 years, with many ending up in landfills after decommissioning. Now, thanks to PECAN resin, made from biomass-derived sugars, these blades can be recycled in just six hours, providing a circular alternative that reduces environmental impact. This #bio-based material not only matches but exceeds the performance of conventional materials, proving that sustainability can go hand-in-hand with high performance. Additionally, the PECAN resin has been shown to be scalable for future manufacturing, making it a practical solution for the wind energy industry. 📢 NEW PUBLICATION ALERT: July 10th - For the first time, this paper establishes the role of crystalline orientation, dislocation densities, and layer-by-layer strength on the anisotropy of bulk uniaxial tensile deformation in commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) processed by Wire Direct Energy Deposition (WDED). Solvus Global values their collaboration with Florida International University (Cold Spray and Rapid Deposition (ColRAD) on this research surrounding microstructure evolution and and bulk tensile behavior for improvements toward WDED. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office published the Multi-Year Program Plan (MYPP), a detailed strategy and planning document that will help guide clean hydrogen innovation and research in the coming years. The MYPP sets forth HFTO's mission, goals, and strategic approach relative to broader DOE and national clean energy priorities. Mid-Infrared Generated Laser-Induced Grating Signals in Methane-Containing Gas Mixtures as Indicators of Composition, Pressure, and Temperature Read the full open-access article here: https://buff.ly/44FwHJ5 The present work is aimed at studying how spatially periodic modulations of the refractive index of the medium, i.e., laser-induced gratings (LIGs), generated in a gas mixture containing methane (CH4) by nanosecond pulses of resonant mid-infrared laser radiation, can be used to measure various gas parameters. It is investigated to what extent the temporal profiles of the LIG signals, recorded as the power of the diffracted by LIGs continuous wave probe radiation, are specific to the composition, pressure, and temperature of a selected buffer gas. This specificity is illustrated by the LIG signal profiles recorded in the experiments in different gas mixtures under various conditions. Experimental data show that large LIG signals can be obtained even in mixtures with CH4 concentrations as low as ∼100 parts per million due to the strong absorption of the excitation light and subsequent rapid, highly exothermic, and partner-dependent collisional energy exchange of the laser-excited molecules with the environment. These two factors ensure high LIG generation efficiency by a small number of CH4 molecules and high sensitivity of signal strength and profile to variations of gas parameters. Sage

INL researchers funded by Office of Nuclear Energy, U.S. Department of Energy’s Light Water Reactor Sustainability Program developed a new machine learning methodology to better predict maintenance needs at nuclear power plants. ⚛️ 🙌   Nuclear power plants produce a large amount of equipment reliability data during their regular maintenance operations. Using this data, this newly-developed methodology first cleans up this information and then uses customized technical natural language processing, a type of machine learning, to identify the physical asset, like a pump or motor, a specific phenomenon happening in that asset, like a cracked valve, and what the likely effects will be.   By automating this analysis, INL and LWRS Program experts hope to help nuclear power plant operators more easily identify and prioritize systems that need maintenance first, reducing overall operation and maintenance costs.   Read more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gYFFrkv9 U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) #nuclear #research #energy #advancedNuclear #cleanEnergy #data #machineLearning

🚨 New publication alert! A recent paper by final-year PhD student Xinjie Guan, A/Prof. Chris Menictas and Prof. Maria Skyllas-Kazacos, discusses the development of an advanced electrochemical stack model for the MV/TEMPTMA aqueous organic flow battery. The model can predict battery performance over multiple cycles, considering ion diffusion and degradation effects. This research makes significant advancements in large-scale, low-cost energy storage solutions and can be adapted for other non-mixing aqueous organic flow batteries.
