Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.

About us

About the Wikimedia Foundation The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia free knowledge projects. Our vision is a world in which every single human can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. We believe that everyone has the potential to contribute something to our shared knowledge, and that everyone should be able to access that knowledge freely. We host Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects, build software experiences for reading, contributing, and sharing Wikimedia content, support the volunteer communities and partners who make Wikimedia possible, and advocate for policies that enable Wikimedia and free knowledge to thrive. The Wikimedia Foundation is a charitable, not-for-profit organization that relies on donations. We receive donations from millions of individuals around the world, with an average donation of about $15. We also receive donations through institutional grants and gifts. In an exciting milestone for digital heritage preservation, over 200 cultural professionals from Latin America were trained through the course “Good Practices for Digital Heritage.” Organized by Wikimedia Chile and Wikimedistas de Uruguay, this initiative aimed to equip professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to manage and share cultural heritage digitally. The course covered essential topics such as digitization, licensing, and the ethical use of digital content, fostering a stronger connection between cultural institutions and the Wikimedia movement. This training represents a step forward in preserving and sharing Latin America’s rich cultural heritage with the world. Participants from museums, libraries, and other cultural institutions gained practical skills and also connected with a broader community dedicated to preserving and sharing their region’s unique cultural stories. This initiative underscores the importance of collaboration between cultural sectors and the Wikimedia movement to drive forward the mission of open access to knowledge. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the spread of misinformation posed a significant challenge to public health. In response, Wikimedia volunteers around the world united to launch WikiProject COVID-19, an initiative focused on delivering accurate, reliable information about the virus, the disease, and the pandemic. This effort was not just about writing Wikipedia articles; it was also about creating a trusted source of knowledge accessible to all, especially during a time when misinformation was rampant. Working closely with the World Health Organization (WHO), WikiProject COVID-19 volunteers crafted comprehensive guidelines for vaccine-related content and addressed numerous misinformation campaigns. Their work ensured that Wikipedia articles adhered to the highest standards of scientific accuracy, helping to counteract the flood of misleading information that plagued social media and other platforms. The scale of this initiative was immense. Volunteers contributed to more than 6,900 articles in over 180 languages, making crucial health information accessible to people across the globe. Between December 2019 and December 2020, articles about COVID-19 were viewed more than 579 million times. These articles covered a wide range of topics, from the basic science of the virus to the development and distribution of vaccines, ensuring that readers could find accurate information no matter where they were or what language they spoke. As the world continues to navigate the post-pandemic landscape, the contributions of Wikimedia volunteers remain a vital resource in promoting health literacy and combating disinformation. Efforts like this are highlighted in the Anti-Disinformation Repository, a collection of tools and activities that illustrate how Wikimedia is an antidote to disinformation.
