The Chicago Community Trust is embarking on an integrated strategy to coordinate the approaches to our North Star goal to close the racial and ethnic #wealthgap as the best way to strengthen the entire #Chicago region. The goal is to realize solutions shaped by the community and incorporate insights from pilot-tested programs to achieve the Trust’s strategic goals of increasing household wealth. #Philanthropy Learn more from the Trust's Ianna Kachoris Ori on the values we're centering and the core tenets we have in mind: https://lnkd.in/gac4Yne7

Giving back is part of who Laura Gutierrez is and how she chooses to show up in the world. What began as a high school volunteer requirement soon became a deep commitment to #philanthropy. The impact of those early volunteer experiences—whether at a soup kitchen, building homes with Habitat for Humanity, or helping to beautify a local school—left a lasting impression on her. Through her career focus, giving financially, volunteering, and board service; she has committed to making a meaningful difference in her community. In celebration of #HispanicHeritageMonth (September 15 – October 15), Laura recently sat down with the Trust's Nina Alcacio to discuss the importance of leading with action to make a difference in her community. #Chicago Learn more: https://lnkd.in/geb37dwR

In the spring of 2024, The Chicago Community Trust launched the Sustainable Solutions for Housing Stability funding program to support organizations working towards housing security and addressing homelessness in Chicago and Cook County. This includes funding services and initiatives that provide housing opportunities, improve client outcomes, pivot towards culturally relevant services for various populations, and strengthen coordinated care networks. In August, the Trust awarded more than $2.375 million in grants to 26 organizations exploring solutions to this issue. For three grant recipients, decreasing homelessness and providing housing stability requires understanding the complex needs of the communities they serve. #Chicago #Philanthropy Learn more: https://lnkd.in/g5zuSGH2

At our recent funder’s summit, we loved hearing from newsrooms funded by Press Forward Chicago - including the South Side Weekly and the Invisible Institute. Both are housed in the same co-working space and collaborate on stories, but their histories and approaches to informing Chicago residents differ. The South Side Weekly began as a student newspaper at the University of Chicago, and holds true to those roots. It still sees itself as a training ground for emerging journalists as it publishes a free print edition focused on “active, participatory, community based journalism,” Executive Director Malik Jackson said. The Invisible Institute, meanwhile, began as a network of people fighting for the rights of public housing residents in the 1990s. Today, the Institute combines data-based investigations with residents lived experiences to create impactful investigations on hate crimes, human trafficking, police violence and more. Their work led to two Pulitzer Prizes last year. Thank you to all the Chicago journalists who shared their insights with Press Forward funders, including Windy City Media Network, LLC, Cicero Independiente, Growing Community Media NFP (parent company of Austin Weekly News) and Chicago News Weekly. And to our Chicago funders for helping us organize the events: The Chicago Community Trust, MacArthur Foundation and The Joyce Foundation.
