NEW: Legislation introduced to establish the Julius Rosenwald and Rosenwald Schools National Historical Park! 👏 Rosenwald partnered with Black communities to fund and build thousands of schools across the South. The park site would be the first to honor a Jewish American.

When President-elect Roosevelt asked her to be Secretary of Labor, she gave him a list of policies she would pursue — and she accomplished all but one before leaving office. National parks should tell all American stories, and maybe especially stories we're not always proud of. The National Park System now includes the Blackwell School National Historic Site, telling the stories of resilience and discrimination in West Texas. NPCA's Cristobal Lopez and Kyle Groetzinger spoke to USA Today during this weekend's ribbon cutting at Blackwell and what the school's inclusion as a national park means for its alumni — and sharing our country's history: “There was no law that said they had to be segregated, but you started seeing these so-called ‘Mexican schools’ to segregate them from their Anglo counterparts,” Lopez shared. ""Alumni are thankful their story is now going to be told on the national stage,” Lopez said. “They can’t shy away from the fact that they were part of a segregated system, but they want people to know they persevered." #Blackwell #LatinoConservationWeek #HispanicHeritageMonth #LatinoHistory #Marfa #NationalParkNews

It doesn't get more official than this: NPCA was honored to join Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, NPS Director Chuck Sams, and Blackwell School alumni in the ribbon cutting at Blackwell School National Historic Site this weekend. The site is officially open to the public as part of the National Park System. Latino history at Blackwell and beyond is pivotal to understanding our country’s past, navigating its present, and building for its future. NPCA is proud to work alongside the Blackwell School Alliance to preserve this historic three-room schoolhouse in West Texas, and tell the complex story of how de facto segregated schools and discrimination impacted Latino students across the Southwest and beyond. We couldn’t ask for a better start to Hispanic Heritage Month – keep an eye out for more stories uplifting Hispanic and Latino history in our national parks over the next four weeks and beyond. #Blackwell #LatinoConservationWeek #HispanicHeritageMonth #LatinoHistory #Marfa #NationalParkNews

What's scarier than Friday the 13th? Cutting the budgets of our national parks. Congress only has days to pass a federal spending bill. Your members need to hear from millions of Americans right now to prevent budget cuts to our parks and communities! Previous budget decisions have led to reduced ranger-led programs, undermined efforts to protect resources, left maintenance needs unaddressed, and compromised visitor experiences. Ultimately, this hurts our irreplaceable resources, and the more than 300 million visitors who visit them each year will be the ones to pay the price. Join NPCA in urging Congress to work together to invest in these special places. #ParkFunding #FridayThe13th #ParkNews #NationalParks #ParkAdvocacy #ParkAdvocate

Rising temperatures at Sequoia National Park threatens water availability for ecological and human use, and threaten the park's iconic towering trees with wildfires. Droughts then slow sequoia recovery and contribute to the increasing intensity of fires, leading to what’s known as “megafires.” $2.3 million from the Inflation Reduction Act will help reduce forest vulnerability to drought and fire in Sierra Parks, including Sequoia and Kings Canyon and Yosemite National Park. #IRA #InflationReductionAct #Funding #NationalParks #ParkAdvocate #Sequoia #California #Conservation

Park staff at Mammoth Cave National Park often describe the site as "two parks in one," with breathtaking worlds to explore below and above ground. Visitors have been touring the cave for over two centuries, and while the caves are as awe-inspiring as ever, the trails tours rely on have seen better days. Through an investment from #TheGreatAmericanOutdoorsAct, cave trails are getting repaired and enhanced, protecting visitors and natural resources alike. Hundreds of projects are underway to improve national parks for the staff who care for them and the visitors who enjoy them. One thing is clear: our parks need more help. Join NPCA in urging Congress to keep investing in our national parks and extend GAOA by at least five more years! https://lnkd.in/ej6auypb #GreatAmericanOutdoorsAct #ParkFunding #ProtectOurParks #ParkAdvocate #Kentucky #MammothCave

Whitebark pines have a soulmate, and that’s the Clark’s Nutcracker. Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, whitebark restoration reunites this keystone species with an essential ecosystem in Olympic National Park. Nearly $3 million from the IRA are devoted to strengthening our forests in the face of climate change threats – and ensuring this uniquely symbiotic relationship between the whitebark pine and Clark’s Nutcracker persist for generations. #IRA #InflationReductionAct #Funding #NationalParks #ParkAdvocate #Acadia #Maine #Conservation
