Carl Fabergé's popularity with the two Danish princesses Alexandra and her sister Dagmar, and their respective marriages into the English and Russian royal families, brought Fabergé's works to the notice of royalty across Europe, with the patronage of Alexandra's husband, King Edward VII, eclipsing even that of his wife. Fabergé's exquisite miniature models and hardstone carvings - embellished with rubies, diamonds and gold - were exchanged between the royal families of Europe and beyond for birthdays and anniversaries, as well as Christmas gifts.
