Best Harry Potter book so far. Loose threads from previous books start weaving in a powerful narrative, tragic and choral. I did not expect it, even after the constant improvement across the series. ( )

First sentence: The villagers of Little Hangleton still called it "the Riddle House," even though it had been many years since the Riddle family had lived there.

Premise/plot: Harry Potter returns (eventually) to Hogwarts where he and his friends discover several changes for the school year ahead. Before school returns, there is a Quidditch World Cup to be endured. It felt like the sporty Quidditch World Cup took up 800 pages. Once he (and his friends) return to Hogwarts and begin their studies again, the pace picks up a bit. One of the changes this year is the triwizard competition. Hogwarts is one of three schools participating. There is supposed to be one student per school. But someone has entered Harry's name into the goblet of fire and so he ends up being a 'champion' [participant]. Cedric Diggory is the other Hogwarts champion. [I don't remember the names from the other two schools.] This competition is spread out throughout the school year.
My thoughts: I feel like the first six-hundred pages were mostly dull and ho-hum. I think the last bit of the novel has all the action and suspense. Out of the four novels I've read so far, this has been the dullest all things considered. All things being taking the book as a whole. There were definitely intense, action-packed, emotional scenes/chapters. But does THAT end-portion make up for all the sporty-sport-sport bit at the start???? I'm not sure. This was the first Harry Potter book where I've had to force myself to keep reading to get to the end of it.

ETA: I had forgotten--almost--how much I disliked this one, OR, at least the start of this one. This one is like THREE different books. There is the EXTREMELY LONG AND BARELY NECESSARY "prologue" of the sporting world championship bit, AND there is the normal, formulaic school semesters bit, and then there is the super compelling, well-paced, ABSOLUTELY absorbing and completely and totally necessary bit that CHANGES EVERYTHING. Like the whole series pivots thanks to the last hundred or so pages of this one. But it takes FOREVER for the good bit to come. ( )

After over 20 rereadings, I believe it's time to review "Harry Potter". To those of you saying that I'm crazy (like my mum) - mind your own business. And to those of you admiring me - thank you.
I'll try to keep these short.

GOF will certainly keep your mind occupied. The Triwizard Tournament is at the center of the plot.
Unlike the first three novels, which were adventure-oriented, GOF is a bit like thriller. The stakes are much higher and there's a first major death. And Voldemort returned, but stupid Fudge doesn't trust Harry and Dumbledore. Also, the Tournament hasn't been organized for 200 years and the Ministry decides to organize it the same year as the Quidditch World Cup? They could've waited a year. It just seems like a lot of trouble for the Ministry.
Another thing: it is said that the three schools like to conceal their locations. Isn't that hard to do if the 2 other schools have to go to the third school during the tournament?

I really love the S.P.E.W sublot. It shows that Hermione is socially conscious and that probably had a lot of influence on me. I also love Hagrid's backstory, but I hate Rita Skeeter so much. Sometimes I wonder why I study Journalism. (Maybe to try not to be like her)

FILM NOTES:
Apart from the first few pages, the film pretty much skips the first 50 or so pages (The Dursleys) and starts right before the Quidditch World Cup and the skips the match?? Given that this book is much longer than the first three, there were some pretty major cuts. Most notably - Hermione's S.P.E.W. organization. That omission will further affect Romione kiss (location and the reason for it). Therefore Dobby and Winky were also cut with Dobby's role being given to Neville. (Just like it would be in the following adaptation).

PERSONAL NOTES:
The third and the fourth novels are the first two HP books I've bought way back in 2005. I've gotten the first two from the library. ( )

Fourteen-year-old Harry Potter joins the Weasleys at the Quidditch World Cup, then enters his fourth year at Hogwarts Academy where he is mysteriously entered in an unusual contest that challenges his wizarding skills, friendships and character, amid signs that an old enemy is growing stronger.

Very good series. Still can't get enough of it. Though I have to say a was surprised at how dark this one became by the end. Very good though. ( )

There is a lot packed in this book. I don't feel like the characters really developed much in this one but they definitely overcame a lot of challenges. There was more history of Voldemort and the death eaters. Excited to see what is building and how the main characters will defeat it ( )

Ah, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, one of my favorite books. I rarely give something above an 8; I only reserve that for special things, and this is definitely one of them.

Where do I begin? Firstly, I loved the international aspect of this book. Honestly, if you were reading this series for the first time, you'd be asking yourself why you hadn't thought of it beforehand. I think this was the perfect time to introduce that aspect of this series: right smack-bang in the middle. The reader has had enough time to learn about the basics of the magical world and is now ready to go above and beyond, exploring the wonders of this magical world.

I loved the Triwizard Tournament, the Yule Ball, and the Quidditch World Cup. They all kept me thoroughly entertained throughout this 700-page monster. I was barely bored. I would say the only time I was bored was during the first 100 or so pages, when there wasn't much happening besides the usual: Harry living with the Dursleys and escaping to go live somewhere else temporarily before returning to Hogwarts. I find it almost impossible to get bored at any section of these books that takes place within Hogwarts (so, the majority of them). This place is just so damn wonderful and exciting. There are always new things to discover, and J.K. Rowling creates tons of interesting scenarios to keep you hooked in (e.g. Harry getting caught in the trick stair.)

However, my absolute favorite thing about this book is the main storyline. It is phenomenal. You get a hint at what's happening in the very first chapter. Then, for the rest of the book, you delve deeper and deeper into the mystery, trying to figure out what is happening. Of course, you are kept entertained by the Triwizard Tournament and tons of comedy. However, just when you think the Tournament is about to end, you're brought right back to the main storyline, and you find out, with your jaw on the floor, how it was all connected. You learn about how a Death Eater has been stationed at Hogwarts, carrying out an intricate plan that would ultimately result in Harry Potter ending at the clutch of Voldemort and Peter Pettigrew, allowing Voldemort to finally conclude his plan and return to power. It has become a common occurrence, as you may have noted, that I always find myself blown away by the major plot twists in the end. However, this one is doubly good because, as soon as Harry escapes Voldemort, you immediately find out who the Death Eater was the whole time: Barty Crouch Jr., impersonation Mad-Eye Moody. Then, you learn about his entire story, and your jaw drops a second time. If this book ALONE doesn't convince you that J.K. Rowling is one of the greatest mystery writers of all time, then I don't know what will.

As I said, the first sections of these books are always really boring to me; however, there is so much good that comes after them that I almost completely forget they ever happened. I just get so engrossed in the overarching storyline, the incredible characters and their development, the exciting action, and the wonderful themes that get darker and more mature with every entry. The book is okay, but I still find too many aspects unbelievable. Even for a fantasy book there's too much that is too perfect for the plot and, in my opinion, not logical. Also the blatant discrimination as a modern reader bothered me a lot. ( )

For anyone reading for the first for fiftieth time, for everyone because the power of the art is incredible in this, adding drama without taking away from imagination

Thoughts:
It feels weird to review a Harry Potter book, because what could I possibly say that isn't already widely known already? So instead of a focus on the plot so much, I'll focus on the fact that this is the illustrated version. I knew this one would be a beast, since book four is significantly longer than the ones up to this point, and sure enough it took Jim Kay, the illustrator, two years to complete rather than the one year schedule I'd grown accustomed to. I know better than to rush him or grow impatient though, because what was delivered is incredible!

The details, and the mood coloring, are what really blow me away with all of these illustrated editions of the stories. There are several two-page spreads throughout it, and whenever I turn a page to see one, it's amazing! It works well with the Goblet of Fire in particular, since you get the creatures and environments in the games created anew. Two images that stuck with me most are pretty much polar opposites: the first, of everyone at the Yule Ball and Hermione blowing everyone away looking amazing, and the second of Voldemort's creepy cobbled together mutated-frankenstein-baby looking body before he gets his full body back. WOW was that gross, to the point where it was hard to look at, and yet I couldn't look away! Masterfully done. ( )

Book 4 in series. Another fantastical adventure for Harry and friends. Voldevort has risen again! Pluggedin review: Many of the first 75 of this tome?s 700-plus pages are spent rehashing the first three books, so about the only new thing readers discover is that Voldemort is on the move again. Meanwhile, Harry escapes his summer ?imprisonment? at the Dursleys? to attend the Quidditch World Cup with the Weasley family and Hermione. Thousands of international witches and wizards are gathered at the Cup, and chaos erupts when the ?Dark Mark? (Voldemort?s sign) suddenly appears in the sky.Back at Hogwarts for the fourth year, only a few remain concerned about the Dark Mark. Everyone?s attention has been diverted by the news of the Triwizard Tournamenta magical contest between the wizarding Champions of the three largest magical schools: Hogwarts, Durmstrang and Beauxbaton. Harry is too young to be chosen as Hogwarts? official school champion, but someone finds a way to enter him in the contest anyhow. Once chosen, Harry must participate, and it is soon clear that whoever entered him did so intending him harm.Through the year-long competition, champions complete three magical tasks, hoping to win honor for their school and a monetary prize for themselves. Along the way, readers discover that the Dark Mark and the Triwizard Tournament are not unrelated after all. Also, something is fishy (again) about the new professor for Defense Against the Dark Arts (Does he want to help Harry or harm him?). Hermione goes on a campaign to free the house elves from slavery, and everyone gets fed up with muckraking journalist Rita Skeeter, who seems determined to ruin Harry?s life. The Triwizard tournament ends with a twist, and the victory celebration has hardly begun before Harry is sucked into another battle with Voldemort. Rowling delivers on her promise that a well-liked character will die. Once again, Harry escapes with his life, but the end of this story spells more-than-usual concern for the future, because Voldemort has regained his body (which he had lost when he tried to kill infant Harry) and his followers. As the book closes, we find Professor Dumbledore calling the international wizarding community to stand together against the dark side. A large-scale battle is sure to come.

4.75 ⭐️ rounded up.

This one moves a bit slower than the first three and took me longer to get through than I expected (it was easier to put down, so I often did). But JKR sure knows how to write a good ending! The last 15% or so was the best part of the book. ( )
  erindarlyn | Jan 25, 2024 |
Yep, still 5 stars. Life got a little busy as I was reading this one, so it took me a little longer.. And consequently, some of the more draggy parts ... Well, dragged. Specifically, the spew (aka house elf liberation front) bit and some of the more.. sentimental bits. But! The book's still good in those parts, and then completely overridden by the excellent climax and end. Just keeps you absolutely glued to the pages, especially once the third tri wizard task starts!
Though during the slower parts I was starting to think I'd be glad to take another break to read a library book or an early reviewer, now that I've finished book four, I wish I didn't have to take the break! Ah well, only 4 interim books and then right back to it ;) ( )
