Long gone by Alafair Burke: an excellent thriller in Reviews of Early Reviewers Books (August 2011)

Reviews

Television producer Laurie Moran is delighted when the pilot for her reality drama, Under suspicion, is a success. Now Laurie has the ideal case to feature in the next episode of Under suspicion: a cold case about the Cinderella murder. When Susan Dempsey, a beautiful and multi-talented UCLA student, was found dead, her murder raised many questions.

There were a lot of characters that were suspicious but the story kept them clear so it wasn’t hard to follow. There wasn’t a lot of suspense but the story kept my interest and the main characters were likable. This was a light and easy read.… (more)

A mystery that follows Chloe as she attempts to discover who stabbed her husband, Adam, while she was attending an award ceremony. Suspicion of the culprit changes throughout the novel as new evidence emerges and Chloe finds herself defending her teenage stepson, Ethan, after the police charge him with murder. Complicating the situation, is that Adam was previously married to Nicky, Chloe’s older sister, who has always been the less successful of the pair. Deceit, control, manipulation and domestic violence feature throughout as Burke spins an ingenious plot and keeps tension gradually mounting as the investigation and Ethan’s trial progress to an unexpected finale.… (more)

Having read most all of Mary Higgins Clark’s novels over the years, I’d say I’m a fan. This book did not seem like her work at all. There was a lot of unnecessary repetition, the dialogue (including the characters talking to themselves inside their heads) was juvenile, and the story itself was anticlimactic.

THE WIFE BY ALAFAIR BURKE

What would you do to survive? What would you do to protect your secrets? If you read the synopsis on Goodreads you will think you know what this book is about and where the Author will take the story but I am here to tell you just read this book because the journey that Alafair Burke takes you, will have chills running down your spine.
Every time I thought I just had this figured out it, I did not. This gave me everything I love about a psychological thriller or mystery. All the way from beginning to end this book is a total package and Chef's kiss.
A must read in my mind if you like mystery, thriller/psychological thriller and a whole lot of WTF moments.
