The filmmaking trio collectively known as Rkss (François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell) tend to toggle between two distinct tones of horror: infectious, gory horror comedies and mean horror that packs a punch. With two features screening at Fantastic Fest, We Are Zombies showcased the directors’ playful side. At the opposite end of the spectrum lies Wake Up, Rkss’s delightfully mean-spirited slasher.
Six Gen Z activists hide in a labyrinthine big box furniture store, biding their time until it closes for business to deface the property in protest. Once the lights go out and the exits are locked, the group spreads across the massive maze-like layout to maximize the damage. Despite some adolescent tension, their plan begins without much of a hitch. That changes when newcomer Karim (Tom Gould) isn’t careful and catches the attention of drunk security guards Jack (Aidan O’Hare) and his volatile, psychologically disturbed...

Filmmakers Rkss show their mean streak in "Wake Up," a barbarically nasty hunt-and-stalk flick for the sake of viciousness. It's not especially complicated, nor does that matter. "Wake Up" is foaming at the mouth with primal thrills that do not care for mercy. Rkss presents their contemporary riff on "The Most Dangerous Game" in a department store setting, taking aim at unlucky Gen Z'ers who become trophy kills. Nothing matters but survival; a refreshingly focused take on apex predator material that veers into sickening slasher territory.
The massacre takes place in a furniture department store — think Ikea, complete with a meatball food fight. Social media activists hide themselves throughout the showroom floor for an elaborate protest stunt that will expose Idea's cruel deforestation practices, then pop out undetected. They write graffiti messages, deface company property, and even splatter leftover organs from a butcher's shop in the shower displays, not...

You can watch the clip in the embed at the bottom of this article.
Written by Alberto Marini and based on an original idea by Martin Soudan, Wake Up centers on a group of hot-headed Gen Z activists who find themselves brutally hunted after they become trapped in a furniture superstore during an act of environmental protest gone wrong.
The furniture store setting reminds me of an ’80s slasher that deserves to be more popular, Hide and Go Shriek.

“As soon as we read the script, the core concept and the timely subject were so compelling to us, that we immediately could visualize the film and we knew we had to direct it and bring our own signature into the project,” said Rkss. “A slasher in a closed furniture store and warehouse makes an exciting playground for sure!”

I do not know how anyone attending Sitges each year does not feel a little bit of remorse that they cannot have themselves cloned, ship out those clones to each and every screening of each and every film in the lineup, then collect all those clones, mash their memories all back into one, then consume those memories so that you could say, yes, you've seen *all the movies at Sitges*. We have a limited amount of time to spend here but we are going to have to come back and go over this massive, massive list of film that the folks at Sitges have programmed for this year's festival. The program includes Kill, Late Night With The Devil, Brooklyn 45, Wake Up and...

Jenny Lewis knows she’s not a real Southerner. “Let’s be honest,” the 47-year-old indie-rock icon says on a Zoom call. “I’m a Jewish girl from the Valley, transplanted in East Nashville. I’m not an outlaw at all.” It’s true: In Tennessee, where Lewis has been splitting her time with L.A. since 2017, the only law she breaks is smoking weed. She’s also allergic to horses. And bonfires. “I’m the nerdiest, wimpiest Nashvillian,” she confirms.
Even so, Lewis’ new album, Joy’All, is her Nashville Skyline moment,...

In bumper Cannes dealing, Paris-based European film-tv powerhouse Studiocanal has nearly sold out worldwide on Andrew Garfield-Florence Pugh romantic drama “We Live in Time,” executive produced by Benedict Cumberbatch.
Owned by Vivendi’s Canal Plus Group, Studiocanal has also closed half the world on both James McAvoy’s “Control” and Thomas Cailley’s Un Certain Regard opening film “Animal Kingdom,” a critics’ favorite at this year’s festival.
The banner sales news, replicated across other titles on Studiocanal’s broad sales slate, follows quick on the heels of two signature deals at Cannes: A24’s U.S. pickup on “We Live In Time”; a pact with Sony Pictures for the U.S., Canada and much of the world for “Paddington in Peru.”
In further dealings, Studiocanal has seen first break-out sales on action comedy “Only 3 Days Left,” and smart genre slasher “Wake Up,” plus noteworthy additional sales on the Berlin-launched...

Maybe it’s because The Matrix was a perfect movie. Maybe it’s because the hype was simply insurmountable. Maybe it was all the Architect’s impenetrable techno-babble. Whatever it was, when The Matrix Reloaded landed in cinemas in 2003 – 20 years ago today – it left audiences scratching their heads – there was no denying it: _The Matrix was The One. But when Reloaded dropped, the reaction had excited fans fearing the worst: what if the sequels were closer to being… well, number two?
It wasn’t for lack of ambition. After the first film’s success, the Wachowskis declared 2003 to be “the year of The Matrix” – releasing Reloaded in May, finale Revolutions in November, with anime anthology The Animatrix and video game Enter The Matrix also dropping amid that time. What began as a one-off film with a seemingly perfect ending was about to explode into a much bigger mythology, with a...
