2022 has been the year of Korean actors making their directorial debuts. But where Lee Jung-jae and Jung Woo-sung decided to debut with their own action features, actress Lee Joo-young, best known for her excellent work in small indie films like “Maggie” or “Baseball Girl” makes her debut with a similarly small but charming short film “Leave at Door, Bell X”.

“Good Neighbour” is a project worth looking out for two big reasons. One: it is the return of actor Oh Dal-su. The once much-loved actor fell sharply from grace when his name came up in the early days of the #metoo movement in Korea. All projects featuring the actor had since been shelved or dropped, including this one. However, the court cleared him of all wrongdoings last year and fans have been looking forward to his comeback to the big screen. The second reason “Good Neighbour” should jump up everybody’s anticipated films list is that it is also the return of director Lee Hwan-kyung, whose last film seven years ago was the smash-hit and still highly popular “Miracle in Cell No. 7”. Excited now? I bet you are!

Lee Joo-young has become a darling of sorts of Korean indie cinema. The actress, who studies film and theatre at the Kyung Hee University, started her cinematic journey with a debut in the short “Behinds” in 2011. But it wasn’t until indie director Zhang Lu’s “A Quiet Dream” in 2016 and her work in K-dramas like “Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo” that her profile rose in prominence. Interesting roles in other Korean indies like “Jane” and “Maggie” followed, in which her performances were met with positive responses.
2020 has been good to her professionally. Beginning with her role of a transgender chef in the hit series “Itaewon Class“, which received a very favourable response, she also was the leading lady in the indie film “Baseball Girl” by Choi Yoon-tae, which released in the second half of 2020 and saw a high number of admissions, with her performance once again being applauded by critics,...

Female-centric sports dramas often bring a different angle to the tried and tested formula. Even Korean productions like “Forever the Moment” and “As One”, for example, have managed to entertain by focusing on female characters and stories. Choi Yoon-tae’s debut feature “Baseball Girl” also attempts to do the same, setting the story in the often-visited world of Korean baseball.

Joo Soo-in used to be a star pitcher in middle school, the first female baseball player in 20 years. Since then though, the realities of high school and pro league baseball have held her back as she sees her teammates, even those with lesser abilities, progress forward while she stays where she is. The New York Asian Film Festival has been a major highlight of the movie calendar since it first launched in 2002, but celebrating this annual orgy of contemporary Asian cinema has always felt a bit like bragging about an experience that most people out there will never get to have. Not only is Nyaff the country’s best-curated and most fearless showcase of new films from Japan to Indonesia and all points in between, but most of these great films never find more permanent homes in the United States (though anyone willing to sift through the recesses of Amazon Prime or explore niche-driven streaming platforms like AsianCrush and Rakuten might find some titles that haven’t completely fallen through the cracks).
