For the past few years, actor Mark Webber has been a mainstay at film festivals like Sundance and SXSW, appearing in movies that premiered at one or the other, including his first two features as a director, Explicit Ills and The End of Love . Probably his most high profile role to date was playing musician Stephen Stills in Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World , although he's had pivotal roles in a number of other movies as well - Save the Date and For A Good Time Call. are two of my personal favorites in terms of Webber performances. Right now, he can be seen in the thriller 13 Sins , directed by The Last Exorcism 's Daniel Stamm, playing a salesman faced with a baby on the way and insane medical bills for his autistic brother. When he gets a phone call offering...

In Danny Boyle’s latest genre-bending effort, “Trance,” film noir is fractured into a multi-layered crime narrative with lush, angular cinematography, and -- of course -- an allegiance-shifting femme fatale. As American hypnotherapist Elizabeth Lamb, who guides art auctioneer Simon (James McAvoy) toward the repressed location of a stolen painting pursued by gangster Franck (Vincent Cassel), actress Rosario Dawson impeccably holds the last of those aspects. There is a slippery, sensual quality to Dawson’s character in Boyle’s tense drama, but in real life, she wears many masks as well, albeit more amiable: founder of Voto Latino and activist for countless other organizations, head of her production company Trybe, and star in such diverse projects as “Death Proof,” “The 25th Hour,” and “Explicit Ills.” Recently, we chatted to her about “Trance,” the possibility of a return in “Clerks III,” and one of her most memorable music video appearances. "Trance" features a constant.

Written, directed by and starring Mark Webber -- whose acting filmography runs from "Kids" to "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" -- "The End of Love" is hardly a work of revelation. At the same time, it's surprisingly well-executed, nicely performed and manages to combine a warm and gentle sense of the rhythms of life with a cold and bright-eyed look at the world and its lead's flaws and character. Following his earlier directorial effort, "Explicit Ills," Webber plays Mark, an aspiring actor and successful fuck-up. We see him woken by his two-and-a-half-year-old son, Isaac (Isaac Love). Mark asks Isaac what he wants for breakfast -- cereal? Isaac is intent: "Oatmeal." Mark shoots him an askance glance: "But oatmeal takes longer than cereal, buddy.…" After a disastrous audition, where Mark has to bring Isaac along (one of two glaringly false notes; call it professionalism or ego, but any aspiring actor would...

To illustrate how long it can take Sundance Film Festival hits to arrive in theaters, look no further than "The End of Love." Mark Webber's second effort as a director premiered to strong reviews at Sundance in 2012, but is only first opening to the general public on Friday, some 14 months later. (The film is also available via on demand services.)
Webber, best known as the lead singer of Scott Pilgrim's band Sex Bob-omb in "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World," stars in "The End of Love" as "Mark Webber," a struggling actor trying to balance his fledgling career and his role as a single dad. In a twist, "The End of Love" co-stars Webber's actual son, Isaac Love, as his onscreen son. (Isaac's real mother appears in the film in flashbacks as Isaac's onscreen mother.)

Mark Webber is not only a solid actor traversing both indie and mainstream worlds ("Broken Flowers," "The Hottest State," "Dear Wendy," "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World"), but he has also found his own voice and bloomed into a interesting writer/director in recent years. He released his debut "Explicit Ills" in 2009, and his sophomore directorial effort, "The End of Love" feels like another personal and intimate work. It also features a meta aspect at its core: he stars as an actor named Mark alongside his real-life, then-two-year-old son Issac. Here's the synopsis: When the mother of his two-year-old son suddenly passes away, struggling actor Mark is forced to confront his shortcomings. With his fate and his son's now intertwined, he grapples with his ability to grow up - stuck between the life he once knew and the one waiting for him. When he has a meaningful encounter with a young mother,...

Mark Webber—whom I tend to remember from his starring role in Storytelling—is in talks to star in Im Global’s remake of the Thai thriller, 13: Game Of Death, just acquired by Dimension Films.
The remake is called Angry Little God and is about an engaged man who “receives a mysterious phone call informing him that he’s on a hidden camera gameshow where he can win over $6 million if he executes 13 tasks. He accepts the challenge, but quickly realises he’s in over his head and is trapped into horrors manipulated by unseen spectators.“
Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism) will direct a script he and David Birke adapted, and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Kiki Miyake will produce.
If you didn’t already know, Mark Webber is actually a director in his own right, and I happened to see his first feature called Explicit Ills at a small film...

One of my favorite late-fest discoveries at Sundance 2012 was The End of Love, a film directed/written by, and starring, Mark Webber and his 2-year-old son. It's a beautiful film about a single father trying to raise a son, and the way Webber captures the connection and dialogue he has with his real boy is incredible. You may recognize Webber from any number of acting roles, as the "Talent" in Scott Pilgrim, or indies ranging from Explicit Ills to Shrink to Weapons, but he's as talented behind the screen as he is on it. Luckily, Ethan and I were able to meet up with Mark at Sundance for a fantastic interview about making The End of Love. Here's our interview with Mark Webber talking about his excellent Sundance 2012 film The End of Love: (We shot at a cafe at Sundance, our apologies for the background noise and framing -...

Every artist takes inspiration from their personal life, but for Mark Webber, making his sophomore directorial effort, “The End of Love,” he didn't have leave home to find his muse. The film, which opened over the weekend at the Sundance Film Festival, focuses on a character named Mark and his two-year old son Issac; which is a coincidence since it stars Mark and his then-two-year-old son Issac. While not exactly a cinematic autobiography, like Webber's previous film, "Explicit Ills," which focused on the Philadelpha neighborhood he grew up, it allows the writer/director to approach a variety and thematic and narrative material with palpable sense of realism. "The End of Love" chronicles the emotional crisis a young father finds himself in when his wife and mother of his child passes away. Adrift, he enters a tentative relationship with another single parent, played by Shannyn Sossamon. We caught up with Webber...

While we'll have to wait patiently for the pieces to come together on Jim Jarmusch's awesome vampire flick that at one time had Michael Fassbender, Mia Wasikowska and Tilda Swinton set to star, it looks like the director isn't sitting idle. Jarmusch has become closely aligned with Mark Webber, producing his directorial debut "Explicit Ills" and casting him in "Broken Flowers." We caught up with Webber at the Sundance Film Festival where he's unspooling his latest effort behind the camera "The End Of Love" (check out our review here) and when we asked about what he might direct next, he instead revealed he's once again going to be working with Jarmusch on an intriguing new project. "As an actor and producer though, my next project I'm doing is this film called 'Panarea' that Jim Jarmusch is producing, that my friend Adam Mansbach wrote…and then my friend Adam Lough is directing,...

Mark Webber's "The End of Love" is a kind of therapy for its director. Loosely based on the filmmaker's life, the movie stars Webber (an actor whose credits include "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World") alongside his real-life toddler, Isaac, and explores the challenges of his single-parent household. Intimately shot and almost exclusively focused on the two characters' daily lives, "The End of Love" maintains an effectively bittersweet atmosphere that works its quiet spell throughout, although it aims too low to leave a particularly strong impression. A far cry from "Explicit Ills," Webber's impressive ensemble piece that served as his directorial debut, "The End of Love" presents a warm depiction of father-son relations that provides the microbudget alternative to "The Pursuit of Happyness," where Will Smith and son Jaden riffed on their own real-life chemistry. Webber pulls off a far more impressive feat by...

One thing that hasn’t changed is the number of great movies which premiere each and every year. It’s a true haven for creativity and this year has one of the best line-ups in recent memory. After the whirlwind of indie-world deals from Sundance, here’s a true indie story from The Playlist: Mark Webber, the indie film veteran who played Stephen Stills, the frontman of the band Sex Bomb-Omb in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, will be directing a version of his own past in his sophomore directing effort, and will be joined by his real two-year-old son.
Webber’s terrific turn as the flighty Stills in Scott Pilgrim should be his star-making role, but it looks like he’s content to stick to his indie roots. After roles in The Laramie Project, Broken Flowers, and Dear Wendy, Webber made his feature directing debut with Explicit Ills.
The untitled drama centers on a single father (Webber) dealing with the loss of his wife while caring for his two-year-old son (Webber’s own boy). To shield his son from the process, Webber is using as minimal a process as he can,...

Mark Webber is no stranger to indie film and is one of those actors that you wonder why he hasn’t broken through to the mainstream. He’s appeared in films such as Dear Wendy, Broken Flowers, and Jesus’ Son. He was recently in Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World which, despite its success among the critics, didn’t produce the box office revenue that was expected. In 2008,Webber made his directorial debut with Explicit Ills and production of his follow-up film is currently underway.

Tila Tequila walked into a flurry of rocks and bottles on-stage at the Insane Clown Posse's Gathering of the Juggalos this year. James Gunn and Horatio Sanz both took notice and offered their thoughts via tweets. "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World," meanwhile, didn't draw nearly as negative a critical reception over the weekend, but its $10.5 million haul at theaters fell short of expectations. Edgar Wright and Mark Webber still appreciated every one of those tickets though.

Things were going on outside Comic-Con as well, though. Demi Moore took a pic with her "Lol" co-star Miley Cyrus. Bret Easton Ellis laughed at "Inception," and Rich Sommer went to a "Simpsons" read-through. You'll find those retweets and info on who had dinner with Ellen Page after the jump.

Slams and jokes flew fiercely in Twitter-Wood today, what with Levi Johnston's public apology to the Palin family and Lindsay Lohan's sentencing. Kim Kardashian contributed some positivity to the situation, though, sending good vibes to Lohan.
Elsewhere, no one was tweeting good things about the heat wave in the U.S. — at least no one in my feed. Vuvuzelas and Nintendo's 3Ds are raking in the comments on Twitter right now, and as with most things, some people are fans and some are not. Stephen Colbert chose an anti-3Ds stance last night in one of his posts, whereas Russell Brand happens to be a fan of those horn noises at the World Cup.
I think it's safe to say that most of Twitter-Wood's citizens are fans of "Entourage." I'm personally a fan of the great photography the show has been able to generate for the column here. Lenny Kravitz happens to be the star today, and hopefully by the time this goes live Autumn Reeser will have decided on what to wear for the show's Season 7 premiere.
These hot issues and more appear in Twitter-Wood for June 16, 2010.

Hip-hop and jazz innovator Guru, who was best known as half of the duo Gang Starr, shocked a noticeable contingent in Twitter-Wood today as news of his death at the age of 43 traveled around. Ice-t, Andy Milonakis and Mark Webber were among those posting condolences.
Kevin Spacey had some good fortune to tweet about though. Apparently he's been waiting out travel delays over the last week caused by the volcano in Iceland, but finally got mobile again. You can check out what he had to say after the jump along with how "Toy Story 3" won't be like the next iPhone and what Chris Kattan thinks Al-Qaeda's favorite movie is in Twitter-Wood for April 20th, 2010.

The battle to overtake Justin Bieber in Twitter's trending topics rankings gained two determined competitors with the new "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" trailer and John Cusack's relentless support of "Hot Tub Time Machine." Both films got some face time with Twitter, but Bieber has thus far stayed the course.
In other tweets, Jessica Simpson and Fred Durst mourned the loss of famed rock photographer Jim Marshall, and Simpson posted some shots of his work that she's collected over the years. Android is bringing aboard a public face for Androids everywhere at its Android Lounge at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. "Star Trek"'s Brent Spiner didn't sound too thrilled about putting on his Data makeup for the appearance, but both he and "Heroes" actor James Kyson Lee were stoked for the show.
On the subject of movies, Mark Webber got in to his "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" co-star Michael Cera's premiere for "Youth in Revolt" last night, and he had good things to say. There must have been a "New Moon"-related tweet mandate out today, because the faces of "Twilight" clogged my Twitter feed today. David Slade posted an "Eclipse" update, Peter Facinelli TwitPic'd from his makeup chair and BooBoo Stewart posted a photo op moment with Latoya Jackson. Even Gil Birmingham contributed an off-screen group shot.
Candid pics showed up from non-"Twilight"-ers as well, though. Ken Jeong, Sarah Silverman and Eli Roth are all prominently features in today's tweet mix, in addition to Rainn Wilson on Bill Cosby and Mark Webber's on-set shot from his new movie "The Lie." Kevin Smith completed his Twitter marathon today, and there were fellow Twitter-Wood feed faces like Richard Kelly and Brian Posehn there to meet him at the finish line. The Twitter-Wood report likewise congratulates him on his 24-hour Q&A session and wishes him sweet dreams while he re-adjusts to a normal sleep cycle again.
Emmy Rossum seems to be the new "Full House" star Twitter-Wood reports over the last week. You can probably chalk that up to my affinity for Counting Crows. I slipped in two more tweets on her performance with them in Central Park today -- this time with video links. Honestly, I could have made a complete report just between her and Kevin Smith today, but I did throw in Shannon Elizabeth's birthday pic, a Hollywood confession and a Twitter Pic of the Day featuring human size extremes. Enjoy!

Tom Felton sounds like he'll be lightening up his mood a bit for his next non-"Harry Potter" project. The normally moody-on-screen actor who plays Draco Malfoy will be jumping into Jonah Hill's "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" sequel "Get Him to the Greek" alongside Hill and Russell Brand, according to his Twitter updates.

Kind of a dull week for movie releases, but hey, at least there's a ton of cool TV stuff on DVD today! The biggest films hitting stores include The Haunting in Connecticut, the HBO fictional adaptation of Grey Gardens, and the Criterion re-release of Apollo moon mission documentary For All Mankind. Also Spanish horror film [Rec] is finally out in the U.S., and The Towering Inferno is out on Blu-ray. But who needs any of that stuff when you can have the classic '80s version of American Gladiators on DVD, not to mention The State: The Complete Series, Mad Men: Season 2, and a shiny new re-release of G.I. Joe Season 1.1?! Are you picking up anything this week? The Haunting in Connecticut [1] (DVD, Blu-ray [2]) Grey Gardens [3] 12 [4] Rec [5] Horsemen [6] Explicit Ills [7] (DVD, Blu-ray [8]) The Edge of Love [9] (DVD, Blu-ray [10]) Van Wilder: Freshman Year [11] For All Mankind: Criterion Collection [12] (DVD,...

Do The Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition (Universal) Spike Lee’s groundbreaking fable about race relations in an ethnically mixed Brooklyn neighborhood during a sweltering New York summer remains as potent, timely and prescient as it was in 1989. Lee is among the cast, which also includes John Turturro, Danny Aiello, Samuel L. Jackson, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, and Rosie Perez (to name a few), that provide the tableaux-like framework for this stunning work. Criminally ignored by Oscar (it wasn't even nominated for Best Picture, but did garner nods for Supporting Actor Danny Aiello and Lee’s screenplay), it endures as a timeless classic. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by Lee, Ernest Dickerson, Wynn Thomas, Joie Lee; Documentary; Deleted and extended scenes; Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS 5.1 surround.

This week in horror, we've got good news and bad news. Here's the bad news first: The Haunting in Connecticut, a much ballyhooed flick "based on a true story," didn't really happen. The good news? You can find much fresher scares in a newly released Spanish import (2007's Rec, which was remade into last year's Quarantine). Also new to shelves is a long-awaited comedy show (The State: The Complete Series), HBO's fabulous, fictionalized Grey Gardens (starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange), Mark Webber's directorial debut (Explicit Ills), and a Sienna Miller-Keira Knightley love triangle (The Edge of Love). I am back, and Friday must be a busy day in Hollywood, because the “Twitter-Wood” feed was tweeting off the hook this afternoon. As usual, you can learn a lot from Rainn Wilson and Wil Wheaton. Both were rattling off tales of recent escapades. But there was plenty of shop talk, too, with writer Brian Lynch offering up his thoughts on James Cameron’s “Avatar” (not to be confused with M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Last Night Airbender”).
Also, I’m tagging today’s post with an advance warning of brief “Star Trek” nerdery, as Wil Wheaton’s post calls out the version of Christopher Pike in the original TV series, not the new one played by Bruce Greenwood in the J.J. Abrams film. And with that, here is today’s Hollywood Twitter report in the words of the actors, directors, and writers who make it all happen.

For years, Mark Webber has built his reputation as a quiet staple on the independent film scene: The 28-year-old Philadelphia native has acted in dozens of movies and worked with a number of the industry's most reputably thoughtful directors (Woody Allen, Todd Solondz, Jim Jarmusch, to name a few). This week, Webber makes his own debut as a writer and director with the release of Explicit Ills, out now at NYC's Angelika theater. The film, which is loosely based on his own story as an impoverished, sporadically-homeless Philadelphia teenager, paints a bleak landscape of urban poverty through a pastiche of lightly interwoven narratives: Two drugged-out artist-kids in love decide to go clean; a smoothie-addicted, health food-obsessed family looks for a way to open their own shop (in the meantime, they make house visits to sell home-brewed laxative formulas); a low-income mother struggles to care for her asthma-afflicted 7-year-old son.
