The event with the actress-singer and Abbott Elementary star is billed as “An Evening with Sheryl Lee Ralph,” per an invite. The hosts of the Los Angeles event, to be held on Sept. 26, include John Gile and Jeff Valenson and David and Bob Schneiderman.
Tickets for the event start at $1,000 per person, and rise to $10,000 for cohosts. Proceeds go to the Harris Victory Fund, a joint committee of the Harris campaign, the Democratic National Committee and state parties.
Several days later, Harris is scheduled to headline her first Los Angeles fundraiser since announcing her campaign, at an event on Sept. 29. This evening, former President Barack Obama is appearing at a campaign reception at the home of James Costos and Michael Smith.

I laugh when I hear people talk about how “The Bear” is a sure thing winner for Best Comedy Series and that it’s such a lock nothing whatsoever can derail it. Ha! Ha I say! Oh, it’s naturally the heavy favorite with its 23 nominations and has remained the overwhelming frontrunner clear through Emmy season, all right. In the Gold Derby combined Emmy odds, it’s running away with this race. The same is true of ““Shōgun” for drama after its giant haul of 25 Emmy bids. And nothing can beat “Baby Reindeer” for Best Limited Series, right? Jessica Gunning (“Baby Reindeer”) is a shoo-in for limited supporting actress, isn’t she? And no one could possibly beat Jamie Lee Curtis (“The Bear”) for comedy guest actress – could they?
But if Emmy history has taught us anything, it’s that upsets happen, even when it comes to shows and people considered locks.

The power of TikTok can singlehandedly make a song, from reviving oldies to turning aspiring artists’ off-the-cuff samples into full-fledged songs. Over the past couple years, that power has proven particularly effective for indie artists who otherwise might struggle to get their stuff heard. Now, we’ve officially had the summer of indies on TikTok: 60% of the platform’s Top 10 hits this summer were independently distributed.
Most of these distributors make up what Music Business Worldwide refers to as “the middle class” of music-making. They’re not The Big Four, but they’re not artists totally DIYing, either. While labels of all sizes generally want to get their tracks on TikTok, these indie labels don’t have the same contentious history with the platform, have quicker turnaround times than the biggies, and many of them have embraced TikTok as the premiere method of advertising new artists and songs.

“CBS Mornings” may soon have more time in the sun.
Executives at CBS’ news-and-stations unit are developing plans for a third hour of the A.M. news show, according to a memo issued to staffers Friday by Shawna Thomas, the executive producer of the weekday morning program, which is co-anchored by Gayle King, Tony Dokoupil and Nate Burleson. “A few of our colleagues and I have been working on developing a third hour of CBS Mornings that we think will hit the airwaves at the end of September,” Thomas said. “It is being developed for a few of our owned stations and will simulcast on CBS News 24/7.”
The third hour, she added, “won’t look or feel exactly like the first two hours. Yes, the talent will be a little different and the name will be a little different, but it will still be the smart and engaging content everyone...

After the network chose to replace Norah O’Donnell with two male anchors on “CBS Evening News,” Katie Couric openly attacked CBS News for being “out of touch.” Despite CBS’s recent efforts to advance women in senior jobs, decision-making authority still resides primarily in the hands of men, as Couric noted in an op-ed for The New York Times.
The irony in CBS’s reorganization—which saw the appointment of more women to managerial roles—was brought to Couric’s attention when the network chose two men, John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois, to anchor the evening newscast. Although she recognized the skill of both men, she thought it strange that during a period of profound social and political transformation, the hosts of CBS’s evening broadcast would be men.

Former American Idol judge Katy Perry seems to have found herself in some hot water in Spain, including a major investigation. So, what did Perry get herself into this time around?
Katy Perry Left American Idol To Pursue Other Things
As is typically the case when you have celebrity judges on a reality competition, at a certain point, they leave in order to pursue other things. Viewers have seen this with celeb judges on programs like The Voice. In Katy Perry’s case with American Idol, it was very much the same.
After serving as a judge on American Idol for years, Katy Perry left in order to pursue other things. The one silver lining from this is the fact that Carrie Underwood is on board to replace the Dark Horse singer. So, in many ways, this switch worked out well for everyone.

Katie Couric is speaking out.
The 67-year-old journalist and former CBS Evening News presenter wrote a guest essay for The New York Times in which she called out CBS for replacing Norah O’Donnell as the host of CBS Evening News with two men, Maurice DuBois and John Dickerson.
Katie herself hosted CBS Evening News for five years from 2006 to 2011.

She doesn’t have a problem with the new anchors themselves, and even says she’s a fan, but she’s criticizing the hiring of two men for evening news on broadcast TV in a male-dominated space, as Lester Holt already hosts NBC Nightly News and David Muir hosts ABC World News Tonight.
“It was more than a little disappointing to read that Ms. O’Donnell would be replaced by two men, John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois. Don’t get me wrong: I know, like and respect these two journalists.

Of the many crimes the Animaniacs' notorious nemesis, David Zaslav, has perpetrated during his reign of terror as CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, his blatant disrespect for the Looney Tunes ranks high on the list. As if doing little to promote the terrific modern "Looney Tunes Cartoons" series that are available exclusively on Max wasn't bad enough, Zaslav's regime has also yanked a whole lot of golden age "Looney Tunes" shorts from its streaming service and killed the live-action/animated hybrid feature "Coyote vs. Acme" solely for the sake of a tax write-off. Sadly, it seems we'll never know if Dave Green's New Yorker-inspired legal satire was an entertaining as the early buzz suggested. Nevertheless, 2024 is shaping up to be a major year for Bugs, Daffy, Porky, and the rest of the Looney gang.

CBS News named a new ensemble anchor team and editorial leadership for “CBS Evening News” after Norah O’Donnell announced her departure.
The nightly program will be anchored by John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois, who will move the production back to New York following the 2024 election. “Face the Nation” moderator Margaret Brennan will also regularly contribute, reporting from Washington, D.C.
As announced on Tuesday, O’Donnell will leave the “Evening News” anchor chair following the 2024 election, remaining with the network in a senior correspondent capacity, allowing for a focus on major sit-down interview specials across platforms.
“With Norah’s decision, we began reimagining and redesigning the Evening News,” CEO of CBS News and Stations and CBS Media Ventures Wendy McMahon said in a statement. “The strength of CBS News has always been in its ensemble of journalists, both in front of and behind the camera, and our goal with John, Maurice,...

CBS Evening News will be revamped after the election, with John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois anchoring from New York and leading an ensemble that includes Margaret Brennan regularly leading coverage from Washington, D.C. and Lonnie Quinn providing weather segments.
Norah O’Donnell, who has anchored the newscast for the past five years, announced earlier this week that she is stepping down after the election to serve as a senior correspondent focused on major one-on-one interviews and longform reporting.
In addition to the new format, the plans are to infuse the broadcast with more 60 Minutes content and correspondents, with that show’s executive producer Bill Owens expanding his role and serving as supervising producer of the evening newscast. Correspondents from the show will be filing for the Evening News “when they have big news to break,” according to a memo that went out to staffers today from Wendy McMahon, the CEO of CBS News and Stations.

Norah O’Donnell is stepping down as anchor of CBS Evening News after spending five years as the face of the program. Puck‘s Dylan Byers reported on Tuesday (July 30) that O’Donnell will relinquish her anchor spot after the 2024 presidential election cycle in favor of a new deal with CBS that includes more platforms for her interviews and specials. She will still contribute to other CBS programs, including her current stomping grounds at CBS Evening News and 60 Minutes. O’Donnell told Byers, “The way our product is distributed is changing. How do we do those big interviews, that great storytelling, and share that in a different kind of way so it can reach a different kind of audiences?” Before becoming a CBS mainstay, O’Donnell worked for NBC’s smattering of programs, including as commentator for The Today Show, MSNBC correspondent, and contributor for NBC Nightly News and Dateline NBC.

Norah O’Donnell’s run as anchor of CBS Evening News is coming to an end, but the veteran journalist is not leaving CBS News.
O’Donnell is set to leave the anchor desk after the 2024 presidential election — her seventh U.S. election she has covered as a journalist — and will become CBS News special correspondent at the network. In her new role, she will conduct newsmaking interviews and other reports for CBS News programming with appearances on CBS Evening News and 60 Minutes.
“In this new role, Norah will have the time and the support to deliver even more of the exceptional stories she is known,” wrote Wendy McMahon, president and CEO of CBS News and Stations, in a memo to staff (full note below).
In her new role, O’Donnell will contribute newsmaker interviews across CBS platforms, including streaming, digital, primetime and Paramount+. That will include appearances on other news broadcasts besides CBS Evening News.

CBS News may be on the hunt for another newsroom honcho.
Ingrid Ciprian-Matthews, a veteran journalism executive who was named president of the Paramount Global news unit just last August, told staffers Wednesday morning that she planned to cede her role, opting instead to serve as a senior advisor for coverage of the 2024 presidential election over the next several months before leaving the company.
Shaking up the senior executive structure at a major news organization in the middle of an election year is highly unorthodox, but so too are the struggles of CBS News’ parent corporation. Paramount has agreed to a merger with Hollywood production studio Skydance Media, and top executives at the company and its new suitor have already indicated that a wave of cost cuts is in store.

Kate Snow, the NBC News veteran who has anchored the network’s Sunday broadcast of “NBC Nightly News” since 2015, plans to exit the post next week, she disclosed to viewers of the program Sunday evening, citing growing responsibilities tied to streaming content.
The move may be a sign that her presence is needed elsewhere. Snow, who is also a senior national correspondent for NBC News, has since September of 2022 co-anchored parts of “NBC News Daily,” a set of daytime hours that both stream on NBC News Now and appear in the daytime schedules of all NBC affiliates. NBC News has placed increasing emphasis on reaching viewers with streaming content, and has continued to expand the original programming it offers in that venue. Those duties, plus those that have Snow reporting on stories during the week for “Today” and the weekday broadcasts of “NBC Nightly News,” have begun to add up.

Ra ta ta, tá tá. The sound of the clave plays across Brooklyn on a windy Friday night in September. Under the Brooklyn Bridge in the Dumbo Archway, Lulada Club — a 10-member, all-woman band — starts playing their instruments along to Hector Lavoe’s “Mi Gente,” which a DJ had been playing as the band set up. The crowd moves closer to the stage, singing the salsa anthem in unison: “Oigan mi gente / Los más grande de este mundo / Siempre me hacen sentir / Un orgullo profundo / Los llamé.” Everyone cheers at the end of the song,...

It’s been more than 15 years since Oscar-nominated cinematographer and director Lajos Koltai helmed his last film, “Evening” (2007), a poignant meditation on mortality, regret and womanhood that featured a star-studded ensemble cast, including Vanessa Redgrave, Glenn Close, Eileen Atkins and Meryl Streep, and was released domestically by Focus Features.
For his return to the director’s chair, the Hungarian-born filmmaker also returns closer to home with “Semmelweis,” a period biopic drama about a Hungarian doctor who turns the medical establishment on its head in 19th-century Vienna. As a young boy growing up in Budapest, a town that would come to be known as “Hollywood on the Danube,” Béla Bunyik dreamed of being in the pictures. “I fell in love with movies in Hungary back in the ’50s,” Bunyik tells Variety. “When I was 12 years old, I started to work as an extra in a few movies…. In 1953, I spent a whole summer with a bunch of kids and some of the best Hungarian actors at the time.”
He recalls being picked up after school by talent scouts and cutting his teeth on the sets of films like Viktor Gertler’s 1954 adventure-comedy “Me and My Grandfather.” “Seeing how a movie was done was very exciting for me and I was sad when the summer ended, and the film was shut,” he says. But those formative years sparked a lifelong obsession. “I got hooked.”
Bunyik would later emigrate to the U.

Growing up there was a stack of VHS tapes that sat in the built-in cabinet beneath our 27 inch living room television. The large white clamshell cases housing Disney tapes were propped against the side to the left while my brother’s wrestling tapes were stacked to their right, as though there to keep the Disneys in line. Beside them sat my mom’s Christmas videos as well as the handful of movies my parents saw fit to own. Finally, in a messy pile at the end, were my tapes. No clamshells or box art, these cassettes bore nothing but a white label marked with the sloppy penmanship of my own hand.

The Beatles and The Rolling Stones waved off rumors of a feud between the bands, but John Lennon once terrified Brian Jones for his own amusement. Lennon and Jones were friendly, with the former considering Jones an incredible musician. Their relationship meant that Jones was fair game for Lennon’s pranks. Once, Lennon convinced a terrified Jones that the police were going to arrest him.
John Lennon made Brian Jones think the police were after him
When Lennon bought a car, he made a number of modifications, adding a record player, a custom horn that played “Lilli Marlene” when honked, and a microphone attached to speaker systems in the front wheel wells. With the speakers, Lennon could communicate with the outside world, talking to pedestrians or playing the sound of trains and airplanes to confuse people.

Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy have welcomed their third child together, a baby girl whose name has not yet been announced.
They were spotted pushing a stroller while they were out for a walk in New York City.
Last month, the couple attended the Tribeca Flim Festival, where the expectant parents showed off Danes’ baby bump.
Danes briefly spoke about their third baby when she attended the Golden Globe Awards in January earlier this year.
“This one was not intentional,” she told Mario Lopez for Access Hollywood.
Although the third baby was seemingly unplanned, Danes said she and her husband were “thrilled” and “excited.” When asked about the gender, Danes exclaimed that they didn’t know yet and were “rolling the dice.”
Danes and Dancy have two other children: Cyrus, 10, and Rowan, 4.
In another interview, Danes told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show that their two sons were not as thrilled as they were.

Arnold Schwarzenegger claims The Terminator franchise, which launched his career in 1984, predicted the future of artificial intelligence.
While speaking at An Evening with Arnold Schwarzenegger in Los Angeles on Wednesday, People reported that the actor talked about how writer-director James Cameron’s theories on AI in the films have “become a reality.”
“Today, everyone is frightened of it, of where this is gonna go,” he said of the controversial technology. “And in this movie, in Terminator, we talk about the machines becoming self-aware and they take over.”
AI is currently at the center of a huge debate in Hollywood and other industries surrounding the technology’s use. It also comes as programs like ChatGPT have risen in popularity across social media.
Schwarzenegger, who plays a cyborg assassin known as a Terminator in the movies, added that “at that time we (had) scratched the surface of AI, artificial intelligence. Think about that.

Public broadcaster Kcet — part of a PBS duopoly with Koce “PBS SoCal” — is back on top at the Los Angeles Area Emmys. Thanks to locally produced series like “Artbound” and “Broken Bread,” Kcet dominated the L.A. area Emmy nominations, announced Tuesday, with 24.
That’s a return to the top spot among nominees, and up from 15 last year. Cable news outlet Spectrum News 1, which dominated last year’s Emmy nominations, was down to 14 this year (vs. 23 in 2022) — still good enough for third place.
Meanwhile, Telemundo outlet Kvea (part of a duopoly with NBC-owned Knbc) saw a huge surge as well, with 20 nominations — up from just 8 last year. That meant Kvea was not only tops with Spanish outlets, but it was also tops with all commercial broadcasters. That includes its sibling NBC4, just posted just two nominations.

Claire Danes is rocking her baby bump on the red carpet. On May 9, the 44-year-old actor stepped out for a "Fleishman Is in Trouble" event in Los Angeles, giving fans a glimpse at her growing belly. She's currently expecting her third child with husband and fellow actor Hugh Dancy, joining sons Cyrus, 10 and Rowan, 4.
In early January, People confirmed the couple was getting ready to welcome another baby. Just days after the news broke, Danes made a red-carpet appearance at the Golden Globes, as she was nominated for her role in "Fleishman Is in Trouble." At the Globes, she wore a white floral gown with a satin bow and sparkling trim, but at the recent event, her bump was much more visible in a black boatneck gown with open sleeves.
Despite the happy news, Danes recently told Jimmy Fallon that her sons were not entirely on board with their expanding family.

I laugh when I hear people talk about how “Succession” is a sure thing winner for Best Drama Series and that it’s such a lock nothing whatsoever can derail it. Ha! Ha I say! Oh, it’s naturally going to be nominated and will likely remain the overwhelming frontrunner clear through Emmy season and up to Emmy night, all right. In the Gold Derby combined Emmy odds, it’s running away with this race, with “The White Lotus” Sicily” a very distant second. But if Emmy history has taught us anything, it’s that upsets happen, even giant ones. So you can absolutely never say never.
What upsets are we talking about? Well, let’s flash back and check out 15 of them, shall we?

Priscilla Presley has stated that there is “no feud” between her and Riley Keough following the death of Lisa Marie Presley.
Lisa Marie, the only daughter of Priscilla and Elvis Presley, died in January aged 54 after suffering cardiac arrest.
Weeks after her death, Priscilla made a challenge to the “authenticity and validity” of Lisa Marie’s will, citing an unusual signature and other allegedly inconsistent details.
Further reports have suggested that Priscilla is no longer speaking to her granddaughter and Lisa Marie’s daughter, actor Keough, due to the legal dispute.
However, Priscilla has now shut down rumours of a “feud” between the family members.
Speaking in Newcastle as part of her An Evening with Priscilla Presley tour, the 77-year-old was asked if she was still in contact with her granddaughter.
“We are just fine,” she insisted.
Priscilla’s legal challenge concerns a 2016 amendment to Lisa Marie’s living trust.

Argonon CEO James Burstall was prompted to write his new crisis management book “The Flexible Method: Prepare to Prosper in the Next Global Crisis” by the Covid-19 pandemic, when the TV industry – like much of the world – came to a grinding halt almost exactly three years ago. Shows including “The Masked Singer U.K.,” which is produced by Argonon subsidiary Bandicoot and usually filmed in front of a live audience, found themselves jeopardy.
But the seeds for the book were sown a decade or so earlier, during the 2008 “credit crunch.” Then, Burstall was the CEO of Leopard Films, which he had founded in 2001 following stints at Oxford University and Stanford and a transitory career in journalism working for Vanity Fair and London’s Evening Standard newspaper. Leopard was chugging along nicely, pumping out hits such as BBC daytime staple “Cash in the Attic,” when disaster struck for the first time. Fuelled by the sub-prime mortgage crisis,...

Sharon Stone is dishing on being between a rock and a hard place.
The “Casino” star admitted that she “lost half” of her finances due to a “banking thing.” Her comment comes on the heels of Silicon Valley Bank collapsing and its effects on the financial market.
Stone received the Courage Award during the Women’s Cancer Research Fund’s (Wcrf) An Unforgettable Evening fundraiser and said during her acceptance speech (via The Hollywood Reporter), “I know that thing that you have to get on and figure out how to text the money is difficult. I’m a technical idiot, but I can write a fucking check. And right now, that’s courage, too, because I know what’s happening.”
She added, “I just lost half my money to this banking thing, and that doesn’t mean that I’m not here.”
Stone continued that her presence at the fundraiser...

With Pink Floyd unlikely to reunite ever again, Gov’t Mule will fill the void this summer by embarking on “The Dark Side of the Mule Tour.”
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Dark Side of the Moon, Gov’t Mule will perform Pink Floyd covers on a newly announced amphitheater tour. Each show will also feature a separate set of Gov’t Mule originals, as well as special guest opener Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening.
According to frontman Warren Haynes, the upcoming tour will mark the final “Dark Side of the Mule” performances. “This all started so organically with what we thought would be a one-time Halloween performance [in 2018]. Since then, ‘Dark Side of the Mule’ has grown into something else. It’s a blast to perform this material but our intent is to do it for one final tour in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Dark Side.

In many successful film franchises, there may be said to be an unspoken "rule of threequels." This rule dictates that the third film in a series is where things begin to unravel. The thinking goes as follows: A film is a hit, establishing a new character or world into cinema. The sequel, banking on the success of the first, will be larger, more exciting, and is often more ambitious. By the third film, however, the filmmakers -- in an effort to outdo film #2 -- either have to ratchet the action up to a near-intolerable levels, or take the action in a "new direction," often with disastrous results. One can see this dynamic at play in "Alien³," "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," "Return of the Jedi," "Death Wish 3," "X-Men: The Last Stand," "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift," "Spider-Man 3," "RoboCop 3," and "Halloween III: Season of the Witch.

Kit Hesketh-Harvey was one of those surprisingly rare performers whose personality was the same on stage as off. When I saw him in the many revues he would write and perform, the audience basked in his humour and genuine warmth.
You could say that Hesketh-Harvey was the last of the old-style Vaudevillians, keeping alive the spirit of Noël Coward, while unafraid to surprise his audience by stepping into the caustic territory of Barry Humphries. He always revelled in that quintessentially English humour, self-deprecating but biting, drawing on a world of shared references from British culture, while at the same time carving out its own originality.
His version of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “A Policeman’s Lot Is Not a Happy One” turned the jolly jape of a song into a critique of modern-day policing. “They want evidence that can’t be circumvented. So, invent it.” Delivered with such a smile,...
