Jon Lovitz was forced to quit Saturday Night Live (1975) to work on this film. Originally the film was to be shot during the summer break between seasons, but when shooting overlapped for two weeks, Lorne Michaels told Lovitz he couldn't miss a single week on SNL, so he had to make a choice. Convinced that the film was going to be a box office hit, Lovitz stayed on until the production wrapped. Lovitz attributed the film's abysmal box office performance to the film being edited to be more family friendly.
Filmed in 1990, but released into theaters in 1992. It was pulled from theaters after just one week.
Gilbert Gottfried revealed on Gilbert Gottfried's Amazing Colossal Podcast (2014) that he voiced one of the alien characters, but his vocal track did not make the final cut.
The film's original working title was "Dick and Marge Save The Earth".
