The Hindi film industry has time and again celebrated Holi onscreen be it in films or the songs, which have encapsulated the feeling of fun and romance. Since the festival of colours is just around the corner, what better way to extend the fun by watching films after immersing in the spirit of the festival.
Here are a list of films that can make your Holi even more special:
‘Silsila’: The film is a romantic drama directed by Yash Chopra. Its theme revolves around the love triangle and extramarital affair. What makes it a great Holi watch is the song ‘Rang Barse’ picturised on Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha. The song is full of colours.
‘Sholay’: Be it the iconic dialogue ‘Holi kab hai, kab hai holi’ or the song ‘Holi Ki Din Dil Khil Jate Hai’ picturised on Dharmendra and Hema Malini, the film sits well for cinephiles on the occasion.

Madgaon Express Box Office Collection Day 2 Updates! ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
After opening at 1.63 crores on Friday, all eyes were on how well Madgaon Express would grow on Saturday. After all, the audience response to the film has been good, and while the start has been fair, it definitely requires a lot more moolah to come in over the weekend so that it can consolidate further from Monday onwards. There was a Bogo offer on Friday, and then with some conditions, it was extended to Saturday as well, which would have given some sort of additional push to the film. Still, it needed to have something in there for the audience to cheer about.
Thankfully, that did happen with the Kunal Kemmu directorial debut outing ending up growing well and bringing in 2.72 crores. Now, pre-pandemic, this would easily have been the first day collections for the film, but then these are...

As he celebrates his birthday today, Ketan Mehta would be hoping that as a birthday gift from the nation he would get and love and accolade in the form of patronization of his latest offering- biopic Dashrath Manjhi. As he is returning to film making after a long hiatus, some may ask the question who is Ketan Mehta? For the uninitiated, Ketan Mehta is credited with films like Holi, Mirch Masala, Mangal Pandey, Sardar, Bhavani Bhavai, Maya Memsaheb, Rang Rasiya etc., to name a few and has been at the fore front in dwelling on stories of personal struggles, and subsequent triumphs and he comes with another Biopic Dashrath Manjhi.
Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Dashrath Manjhi was a story that needed to be told. It is a story of how a man for the sake of his love through his sheer grit, will power and confidence created a road out of...

Films that gained a ‘cult following’ over the years, despite being unnoticed on release
Silsila
Yash Chopra is looked upon as the grandfather of candyfloss romance, an antithesis to the more ‘artistic’ genre of films. One wonders why. Here’s what his early films were about:
Unwed mothers and illegitimate children – Dhool ka Phool (1959)
Partition and the rise of Hindu fundamentalism – Dharmputra (1961)
Taut, song less thriller about a fugitive, a lone woman and a corpse – Ittefaq (1969)
A man who lives with his wife and the ‘other woman’, Hindi Cinema’s first Ménage à trois- Daag (1973)
In 1981, we had another of his equally risqué works, Silsila. Expectedly, sparks flew when the Screen God of the time shared screen space with the reigning diva. Rekha and Amitabh were quite an item on screen and allegedly, off screen too. The grapevine has it that Chopra was inspired to make Silsila on this relationship...

Ketan Mehta and Aamir Khan go a long way. The actor has been a part of Mehta's directorial ventures such as Holi and Mangal Pandey: The Rising in the past. Now as a friendly gesture of sorts, Ketan Mehta has made a 7 minute short film as a tribute of sorts to Aamir's much talked about TV show 'Satyamev Jayate'. Mehta feels that 'Satyamev Jayate' transformed the way TV was used as a medium for the greater good of the society and hence through his company Maya (which specializes in animation and visual effects), the director created a short film as a tribute to the show. The short film captures various tweets from various influential people from all walks of life and their reactions to the show and the 7 minute film has been uploaded across social media platforms.

Ashish Lakhia, the 49 year old renowned art director, who, has to his credit of providing his expertise to films like Holi, Mirch Masala and Maya Memsaab departed for heavenly abode yesterday morning. The reason for his death is being cited as multiple organ failure with his lungs giving way first, followed by other complications. Even though the surname may act as a giveaway, still, not many know that Ashish happened to be the cousin brother of director Apoorva Lakhia and also the brother of actor Aditya Lakhia (known for his 'Kachara's role in Lagaan). Besides being an art director par excellence, Ashish was also a painter and even had an exhibition at the Jehangir Art Gallery about 20 years ago, that was well received. Bollywood Hungama sincerely prays for the departed soul of Ashish Lakhia to rest in eternal peace.

We have barely stepped into the second half of 2011, but film-makers and also actors are already making plans for 2012. Timing the release of a film in the festive week or soon after the school/college examination period or the conclusion of Ipl cricket matches has become a custom already, with producers/actors already staking claim on the prime dates in 2012. The festival period is a big favorite and everyone knows that releasing a film during Eid, Diwali and Christmas can yield rich dividends. At least, the opening weekend business would be humungous, like in the case of Tees Maar Khan [which sank without a trace subsequently due to poor content]. Yash Raj has already 'occupied' Diwali [Yash Chopra-directed film with Srk] and Christmas [Dhoom 3], while Ek Tha Tiger will arrive soon after the Ipl cricket matches conclude on 27 May. Also confirmed for this date [1 June] is Housefull-2. It's become a habit to expect a Salman Khan release during Eid and next year will be no exception, with Salman's Sher Khan,...

Miffed by media reports that he is trying to harm writers, Bollywood star Aamir Khan has resigned from the 10-member committee formed by the government to look into the proposed amendments to the Copyright Act.
"It seems to me that there is an attempt by certain people to attack me in public by printing lies about me, thereby turning the attention away from a genuine debate about copyright issues," Aamir wrote Tuesday to Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal.
According to media reports, at a recent meeting between producers and writers over the issue of royalties, Aamir tried to take the credit from the writers by saying that a song's popularity depends on the star it was picturised on and not on the lyricist's efforts. His remarks apparently angered Javed Akhtar who said that the song "Papa kehte hain" became a hit despite the fact that Aamir was not a star at that time.
