Sorry/Not Sorry delves into the nuanced story surrounding comedian Louis C.K.’s admission of inappropriate behavior. Directors Caroline Suh and Cara Mones guide us through a timeline of C.K.’s career highs and lows, the whispers that followed him, and the reckoning brought by speaking out.
Through interviews with journalists, fellow comedians, and those directly impacted, the documentary examines difficult topics around power dynamics, accountability, and where we go from here.
C.K. achieved great success with his grounded, revealing humor. But allegations from women in the industry surfaced for years, and in 2017, a New York Times exposé confirmed their experiences. With candor, C.K. acknowledged misconduct like masturbating without consent during work interactions. This began a debate: could an artist’s work and past actions be separated?

It has now been seven years since Louis C.K. was canceled. Or was he? In November 2017, The New York Times published a damning piece in which five women came forward accusing him of sexual misconduct. In the article, long-running rumors about the famed comedian’s behavior finally came to light, with his victims describing stories in which he masturbated in front of them or on the phone. Following years of denying such claims, a day after the Times exposé he admitted in a statement, “These stories are true.” In quick order, his movie I Love You, Daddy’s release was scrapped, his deal with FX ended and his career was seemingly put on life-support.
In that statement, C.K. said he would “step back and take a long time to listen.” But less than a year later, he was back on stage, offering no remorse for his actions. It was...

The comedians who put their careers on the line to expose Louis C.K.’s long history of sexual harassment are finally getting the theatrical release that the #MeToo movement denied I Love You, Daddy.
Almost seven years ago, Louis C.K. released a statement to The New York Times openly admitting that the accusations made against him by numerous female comics regarding sexual harassment and misconduct were completely true, even after he and his associates spent years shooting down such claims and professionally retaliating against the accusers. C.K.’s admission only came after the distributor for I Love You, Daddy canceled the premiere of C.K.’s film about his complicated feelings toward Woody Allen amidst the mounting accusations, and the ensuing fallout brought C.K.’s burgeoning career to a screeching halt.

Louis C.K. is the subject of a new documentary titled Sorry/Not Sorry, which examines his comeback and gives a voice to the women who faced consequences after speaking out about his sexual misconduct. Watch the official trailer below.
Beyond going into how the comedian has bounced back from being accused of sexual misconduct by five women in 2017 and subsequently admitting the allegations were true, Sorry/Not Sorry gives space to Jen Kirkman, Abby Schachner, and Megan Koester to open up about their experiences with C.K.
In the trailer, Schachner engages in some dark humor, saying, “When I said I wanted to work with Louis C.K. I should have been more specific.”
Directed by Caroline Suh and Cara Mones, Sorry/Not Sorry also features interviews with the reporters who broke the story of C.K.’s misconduct — Melena Ryzik, Cara Buckley, and Jodi Kantor — alongside Comedy Cellar owner Noam Dworman, comedian Michael Ian Black,...

No institution can dodge Louis C.K.’s comedic legacy and sexual allegations, TIFF included, where he appeared immediately pre-#MeToo with his film I Love You, Daddy. I squirmed slightly recalling C.K.’s appearance at the festival as I watched Cara Mones and Caroline Suh unpacking the case, his survivors, and his humor in Sorry/Not Sorry. The documentary follows entertainment journalists re-contextualizing the controversial comedian’s achievements in the present, along with testimonies from his assault survivors (and talented comedians in their own right) Jen Kirkman, Abby Schnacher, and Megan Koester.
The documentary’s talking-head and archival-footage aesthetic allows for a long runway to observe ethical conundrums in entertainment. Is it okay to be offensive under the guise of comedy? How much truth should be involved in a joke? And how much does that matter? If art is subjective, can the professional remain separate from the personal? While Sorry/Not Sorry proposes intriguing,...

The thing about “open secrets” is: Everyone knows what the secret is, but no one wants to acknowledge or talk about it. Not really, at least — if somebody’s peers and colleagues are all privy to some forbidden or socially unacceptable facts, and bringing it up forces them to reckon with some complicated feelings, then hey, why do we need to bring any of that up? For years, it was more or less an open secret within the comedy community that Louis C.K. had done things and said things that made female comedians feel uncomfortable.

At some point in our culture, we began to see male comedians as philosophers. Invoking the legacies of George Carlin, Richard Pryor and Bill Hicks, comedy fans have labeled funny men as paternalistic truth tellers that we all must revere. Never mind the fact that these men are no longer alive and thus have no opportunity to challenge the way their work has been framed and which living comics they are compared to.
Louis C.K. is one such comedian who has often been spoken of in the same breath as these men, despite lacking the often political edge of their work. C.K. and comics like Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle are the confirmed gold standard of comedy, standing at the top of the mountain looking down at the rest of us. There’s no denying their talent and insight, but they are very much still human, despite the prevailing...

In 2017, like a lot of Louis C.K. fans, filmmaker Caroline Suh wasn’t sure what to make of the allegations of sexual misconduct against the comedian that were detailed in a New York Times story. The report included female comics’ accounts of C.K. exposing himself to them, which he admitted to, and led FX, Netflix and C.K.’s management company, 3Arts, to drop him.
“I watched his show religiously,” Suh says. “And when the article came out, I was surprised and honestly thought, ‘Is it really that bad that he should be banished from the scene?’ I didn’t really know how to think about it.”
Nearly six years later, now that C.K. has sold out Madison Square Garden and won two Grammys for his comedy albums, Suh and her co-director, Cara Mones, interrogate questions about sex and power raised by the comic’s downfall and comeback in their new documentary,...

The “Kids in the Hall” cast — Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson — are unearthed from their burial plot and set loose on the world once again in the first trailer for the Prime Video revival of the beloved sketch comedy. The reboot will debut on May 13, the streamer announced on Wednesday at its Prime Video Presents Canada showcase event in Toronto.
Things are crushed from a distance, tasteless jokes are made and Queen Elizabeth spoofed in the trailer, which sees the comedians skeptical of their new streaming network, Amazon.
The upcoming season will feature eight episodes with all-new sketches and guest stars including Pete Davidson, Mark Hamill, Catherine O’Hara, Kenan Thompson, Will Forte, Paul Bellini, Brandon Ash-Mohammed, Catherine Reitman, Samantha Bee, Fred Armisen, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Jay Baruchel, Eddie Izzard, Tracee Ellis Ross and Colin Mochrie.
The original Emmy-nominated sketch show premiered in 1989 and become a cult comedy hit.

Louis Ck won the Grammy for Best Comedy Album at the 2022 Grammy Awardss, sparking widespread outrage among women for his apparent all-is-forgiven status, despite his documented and admitted history of sexually harassing and exposing himself to female comics.
The prevailing sentiment among critics is that his victory is evidence that there is no accountability, so long as an offender is connected or powerful. Or as Stanford professor Michelle Dauber put it, “Women are worth nothing to power. Nothing.”
C.K. won for his self-produced comedy show “Sincerely,” his first since admitting in 2017 to his years of sexual misconduct. Several female comics, including former colleagues, detailed examples which included C.K. locking women in his office and masturbating in front of them after ostensibly asking their permission under circumstances that the women did not feel were consensual. C.K.’s manager also threatened some of the women with career consequences if they went public.

Bryan Callen says he is innocent of multiple rape allegations made against him, and the former The Goldbergs actor is suing the husband of one of his accusers to prove it, sort of.
“This lawsuit arises from Defendant Gabriel Tigerman’s ongoing campaign to destroy the livelihood of actor and stand-up comic Bryan Callen through threats, harassment, and intimidation of third parties that dare contract with him,” says the complaint citing intentional interference with contractual relations filed Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court.
“Driven by the false allegation that Mr. Callen assaulted his wife over 20 years ago, Mr. Tigerman has sent and continues to send Mr. Callen’s representatives and others direct demands that they cease doing business with him, or else be falsely branded as supporters of sexual assault,” the jury trial seeking paperwork continues (read it here).). “As a direct result of Mr. Tigerman’s vengeful interference, Mr.

Exploring the relationships between comedians and the women that made them funny, Call Your Mother is a fun and sincere ode to the creative process. Directed by Jesus Camp and Detropia filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, the documentary follows various stand-up comedy legends including a few like Kristen Schaal, David Spade, Roy Wood Jr., and Bridgett Everett who are fortunate enough to still have their mothers around even if they get the occasional scalding for a sketchy joke that goes over the line. One stand out who steals the show is Fortune Feimster, a lifelong tomboy whose childhood in North Carolina included being raised on Hooters. She spins hilarious stories of life in the South as her mother proudly watches on.

David Spade’s “Lights Out,” Comedy Central’s latest attempt to fill its 11:30 p.m. time slot, averaged 270,000 total viewers in its premiere week.
Among adults 18-49, which is the key demo for advertisers on entertainment programming, “Lights Out” averaged a 0.17 rating from Monday-Thursday. Spade played slightly better among adults 25-54, averaging a 0.20 rating.
None of those are great numbers.

The HBO comedy “Barry” is having a great day. First it reaped three Golden Globe nominations and then it earned another three bids at the Writers Guild of America Awards. At the WGA, it competes for Best Comedy Series writing as well as for an individual episode and for the catch-all Best New Series award.
For the comedy series award, “Barry” faces off against reigning Emmy champ “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” as well as “Atlanta,” “Glow” and “The Good Place.” “Barry” is the only comedy up for the new series award alongside the dramas “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Homecoming,” “Pose” and “Succession.”

Comedian Jen Kirkman has taken to social media to sound off on Louis C.K.’s sexual misconduct just days after C.K. made a polarizing return by performing a surprise set at New York’s Comedy Cellar. The comedy set was C.K.’s first since admitting to sexual misconduct last fall.
Kirkman brought attention to the rumors surrounding C.K.’s inappropriate behavior back in 2015 when she mentioned on her “I Seem Fun” podcast that she had turned down opportunities to work with male comics in the past due to rumors of sexual misconduct. Kirkman did not name C.K., but the internet figured it out since C.K. invited Kirkman to tour with him in the past.

Starz has acquired a slew of comedy series, specials and films that launched on Seeso, the NBCUniversal-owned Svod service that shuttered last year.
Among the series in the deal are Take My Wife, Night Train with Wyatt Cenac and The Ucb Show. It also includes stand-up specials from the Sklar Brothers, Brian Posehn and Lachlan Patterson, along with The Pistol Shrimps, the documentary about a group of showbiz folks including Aubrey Plaza who play in a women’s recreational basketball league in L.A.
“We are excited to address the uncertain fate of several Seeso series, including the beloved Take My Wife series, by providing a new home for these programs and their fans at Starz,” said C. Brett Marottoli, Head of Program Acquisitions for Starz. “These comedies align strategically with many Starz Original series and will appeal to our audiences as we continue featuring more diverse casts and storylines across the Starz platforms.

In the face of ever-declining DVD sales, Netflix has quickly become the foremost place to discover new stand-up material. The streaming giant is on track to release over 50 exclusive specials in 2017 alone, signing big names (with big cheques) from both sides of the Atlantic and beyond.

Louis C.K. has been accused of sexual misconduct by five women in a new report published by The New York Times. The women include Chicago comedy duo Dana Min Goodman and Julia Wolov, Abby Schachner, Rebecca Corry, and an anonymous woman. Goodman and Julia Wolov told The Times they met C.K. during a performance at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, during which C.K. invited them to hang out at his hotel room. It was here where the women say C.K. asked if he could take out his penis.
“He proceeded to take all of his clothes off, and get completely naked, and started masturbating,” Goodman said.
Corry was working as a producer on a 2005 television pilot in which C.K was appearing as a guest star. She says the comedian approached her and asked if he could masturbate in front of her.

President Trump is causing confusion — and fear — after a cryptic comment he made to the press following a military dinner at the White House on Thursday.
After summoning the media to a last-minute photo op with “the world’s great military people” on Thursday evening, Trump asked reporters: “You guys know what this represents? Maybe it’s the calm before the storm.”
“What’s the storm?” asked one reporter. “On Iran? On Isis? On what?”

Anyone who watched “Louie” knows that Louis C.K. and Pamela Adlon share an infinitely watchable rapport onscreen. Playing fictionalized versions of themselves in the Emmy-nominated FX show, their real-life friendship infused their characters with a warm naturalism that made “Louie” unlike any other show on television. It comes as no surprise then that “Better Things” shares the same naturalism; Adlon was a writer/producer on “Louie” and C.K. is an executive producer on “Better Things.” C.K. was instrumental in getting the show greenlit, pitching an Adlon show to FX president John Landgraf.
Former collaborator Tig Notaro recently disavowed C.K.’s involvement in her Amazon series, “One Mississippi,” even though he is credited as an executive producer. As unseemly rumors continue to surround the comedian and filmmaker, his fruitful collaboration with Adlon of a woman filmmaker who has benefitted greatly from C.K.’s support — and that’s all according to Adlon.

In 2015, comedian Jen Kirkman told a story on her podcast about an unnamed successful comedian whom she called a “known perv,” widely assumed to be Louis C.K. “This guy didn’t rape me, but he made a certain difficult decision to go on tour with him really hard,” she said. “Because I knew if I did, I’d be getting more of the same weird treatment I’d been getting from him.” She has since deleted the podcast, but her quotes can be found here.
The rumors remained largely under the radar until recently, when comedian Tig Notaro called on C.K. to “handle” the allegations against him. Notaro addresses sexual assault on the second season of her show, “One Mississippi,” and insisted C.K. had “never been involved” with the show, despite being listed as an executive producer.

Stand-up comedian Jen Kirkman is denying that a comedian she toured with in 2015, who made her uncomfortable, was Louis C.K., as many have assumed over the years. “There are rumors out there that Louis takes his dick out at women. He has never done that to me,” Kirkman said in an interview with the Village Voice. “I never said he did, I never implied that he did.” C.K. has been at the center of sexual harassment allegations for years. In 2012, Gawker ran a blind item that stated a male comedian, which many thought sounded like C.K., was forcing women.

The once symbiotic relationship between comedians Tig Notaro and Louis C.K. has soured, as Notaro told The Daily Beast that C.K. has no creative role on her Amazon show, “One Mississippi.” Although C.K. is listed as an executive producer during the opening credits, Notaro said he has “nothing to do with the show… He’s never been involved.”
She repeated similar statements three times throughout the interview. “His name is on it. But we are writing the show, the writers’ room. We’re sitting in editing. We’re acting. We’re on set,” she said. Her insistence might have something to do with the fact that a major plot in season two of “One Mississippi” involves sexual assault in the work place.

1. “A Series of Unfortunate Events” Season 1 (available January 13)
Why Should I Watch It? Netflix has sunk quite a sum into this ambitious adaptation of Lemony Snicket’s “A Series of Unfortunate Events.” Quite unlike the film version starring Jim Carrey, Netflix’s serialized adaptation will incorporate Lemony Snicket as a character (just he was in the book). Patrick Warburton plays the titular author recounting the tale of three Baudelaire children who are taken under the wing of the evil Count Olaf (Jim Carrey) when their parents encounter an unforeseen tragedy. And from what we’ve seen, Snicket’s warnings of the story’s grim nature as well as his general incorporation only make the show itself more endearing. This is a children’s story too dark for some children and made with adult expectations in mind.

Jeff Tweedy’s appearance on @Midnight is tonight and it turns out he was clever and delicately amusing about music based on this clip from Pitchfork. Tweedy wasn’t quite as blue as his fellow competitors, David Koechner and Jen Kirkman, the latter of whom dropped “Smells Like Teen Scrotum.” Kirkman also paid tribute to Wilco with “I Am Trying To Break Your Fart,” but, to be quite honest, we’re disappointed no one came up with “Heavy Metal Bummer.” Missed opportunity, folks.
