There’s a reboot of the classic Universal Monsters property The Wolf Man coming our way from Blumhouse Productions and The Invisible Man (2020) director Leigh Whannell, aiming for a January 17, 2025 theatrical release – and the folks at Empire have just unveiled a new image from the film, which can be seen at the bottom of this article. Empire also shared some quotes from Whannell where he said he’s aiming to make this different from every other werewolf movie we’ve seen, and described the project as “straight-up, pure horror.”
The leads of Wolf Man are Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner, both of whom were in the 2011 film Martha Marcy May Marlene. Abbott is taking on the role of a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator. Garner is playing his wife, a character described as being a mother whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Following the recent trailer, Empire Magazine has shared a new official image from the upcoming Wolf Man reboot, and it finds Christopher Abbott's protagonist, Blake, beginning his Lycanthropic transformation.
Our first look at the titular werewolf via an actor in a costume at Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights was met with a lot of backlash, but the trailer did suggest that this will be the monster responsible for the initial attack, leaving Blake to change into a different beast altogether.
Director Leigh Whannell tells the mag that this movie represents his return to "pure horror" after working on Upgrade and The Invisible Man.
“Upgrade was more sci-fi action. I was watching a lot of domestic thrillers when I wrote The Invisible Man, because I love that genre. [Wolf Man] is me saying, ‘I just wanted to make something that is straight-up, pure horror.’”

Director Leigh Whannell (The Invisible Man) returns to the world of the Universal Monsters with next year’s Wolf Man, and Empire has shared a brand new image this week.
Additionally, the outlet sat down for a chat with Whannell that has been published in part this morning. Whannell promises that his Wolf Man is a straight up horror movie, for starters. He also teases that the new movie aims to bring something fresh to the werewolf sub-genre.
Whannell explains, “Upgrade was more sci-fi action. I was watching a lot of domestic thrillers when I wrote The Invisible Man, because I love that genre. [Wolf Man] is me saying, ‘I just wanted to make something that is straight-up, pure horror.’”
“I think of it as a companion piece to The Invisible Man,” he continues. “I didn’t want this film to be a nostalgic or a retro Wolf Man film in any way.

Leigh Whannell has long had a propensity for producing palpitation-inducing terror. He co-created both Saw and Insidious alongside James Wan; stepped up as director for Insidious: Chapter 3; and more recently has conjured gag-worthy gore and breathless tension with the likes of Upgrade and The Invisible Man. But as Whannell sees it, his previous two critically-lauded features have been more horror-adjacent genre hybrids – and with his upcoming Wolf Man, another fresh take on one of Universal’s classic monsters, he’s ready to really scare you again.

The full moon no longer seems to be shining in the night sky over Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights event. Earlier this month a photo op was set up where guests could both interact with and take pictures with the Wolf Man, specifically the one from the upcoming 2025 reimagining from Blumhouse.
First look at the Wolfman in Leigh Whannell’s ‘Wolf Man’
Just revealed at this year’s Halloween Horror Nights.

However, after a month, the display is gone. The area that once featured a backdrop with the Wolf Man logo and props to better immerse guests has now been replaced with a generic “Halloween Horror Nights” backdrop.
The disappearance of the display might have to do with the massive online backlash over the reveal of the monster’s design. He looked less like a wolf and more like a goblin from the Harry Potter films.

Written by Leigh Whannell, and directed by James Wan, Saw originally debuted at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival before later opening in US theaters in October that year. Lionsgate bought the rights and created an entire franchise that has gone on for 10 movies already (Saw X last year). "20 years later and still ready for my close-up." 40 years ago, cinema’s ultimate cyborg teleported into the Hollywood landscape in a lightning strike. It couldn’t be bargained with. It couldn’t be reasoned with. It didn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear – and for four decades, it absolutely has not stopped. Yes, 2024 marks 40 years of The Terminator – James Cameron’s time-twisting sci-fi horror, which gave Arnold Schwarzenegger his most iconic role, launched the career of the most successful filmmaker of all time, and spawned one of the greatest sequels ever made. Hasta la vista, baby.
The new issue of Empire marks the momentous anniversary of The Terminator with a major, world-exclusive new James Cameron interview – speaking to the legendary director about the making of his debut feature proper; the ongoing legacy of The Terminator and its many sequels; the thematic preoccupations that have reverberated throughout his career; his changing relationship with the original film; and what...

Saw is returning to cinemas to celebrate its 20th anniversary in October, in a 4K restoration. More here.
When Leigh Whannell and James Wan made a short film about a woman who wakes up tied to a chair with a reverse bear trap on her head in 2003, all to help them pitch their feature film script to studios, they couldn’t possibly have imagined it would lead to one of the most popular and successful horror franchises of the 21st century.
Though it later became a byword for meaningless violence and gore with the increasingly grisly trap sequences – for this writer, Saw 3 is the most graphic film is the series, The Rack is particularly vile – by comparison, the original Saw is remarkable for how restrained it is in its violence. Most of the film consists of a two hander in what must by now be the most famous bathroom in horror history.

If you're a horror fan, you're familiar with Blumhouse Productions (cited as Blumhouse from here out). Even if you're not a horror fan, you've probably watched a Blumhouse film without knowing it ("Whiplash?" "Jem and the Holograms?" "Tooth Fairy?"). Jason Blum's nightmare factory is synonymous with today's mainstream horror pillars, securing the rights to everything from "Halloween" to "The Exorcist" and beyond. Indeed, it's impossible to banter about our contemporary horror era without acknowledging how prevalent and prodigious Blumhouse has become — so why does it feel like it's ghosting us this year?
Blumhouse decimated last year's horror movie market. In 2023, Blum's juggernaut scared up nearly $800 million worldwide in box office totals. Emma Tammi's video game adaptation "Five Nights at Freddy's" boasted a high score of $297 million on a $20 million budget — one of nine films released by Blumhouse. Now, there's no metric for reporting for streaming titles like...

Horror films have always been a way to interrogate the anxieties of a time, society, or culture and reflect them to the viewer -- like a twisted funhouse mirror. Fear is a universal emotion and history is known to repeat itself, so horror is a genre filled with remakes, some of which are very good. Sometimes, like in the case of Leigh Whannell's "The Invisible Man," a remake evolves into something entirely different than the original story to better resonate with modern audiences. And sometimes a remake is, unfortunately, nothing more than a blatant cash grab from a studio looking to squeeze some blood out of the all-holy stone of "Recognizable IP."
And then there are the most controversial of all remakes: the Americanized remake.
Despite the knee-jerk reaction claiming otherwise, American remakes are neither inherently inadequate nor synonymous with "unnecessary." TV shows like "Shameless" and "The Office" are American remakes,...

This past weekend, Universal released the first teaser trailer for their upcoming remake of the 1941 classic The Wolfman. This reimagining of the character sets the story in the modern day, similar to the 2020 remake of The Invisible Man, also directed by Leigh Whannell.
The official Wolf Man synopsis reads:
Golden Globe nominee Christopher Abbott stars as Blake, a San Francisco husband and father, who inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his own father vanishes and is presumed dead. With his marriage to his high-powered wife, Charlotte, fraying, Blake persuades Charlotte to take a break from the city and visit the property with their young daughter, Ginger.
But as the family approaches the farmhouse in the dead of night, they’re attacked by an unseen animal and, in a desperate escape, barricade themselves inside the home as the creature prowls the perimeter. As the night stretches on, however,...

Early next year, Universal and Blumhouse will continue their reanimation of the Universal Monsters with the release of director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man. Whannell, who also directed Insidious 3 and Upgrade for Blumhouse, was the man responsible for bringing The Invisible Man back to life in 2020. He did so with a modern twist on the character that turned out to be more than just a moderate success. The Invisible Man raked in $144 million on a $7 million budget, receiving mostly positive reviews.
With horror doing better than ever at the box office and Whannell arguably without a miss on his directing resume, hopes are high for Wolf Man, howling into theaters on January 17, 2025.
But this isn’t the first time a modern Wolf Man project sounded good on paper…

Photo Credit: Universal Pictures The line between man and beast blurs in this chilling new horror from Blumhouse. The supporting cast, including Sam Jaeger, Ben Prendergast, and Benedict Hardie, adds further depth and intensity to this haunting story. The film centers on Blake (Christopher Abbott), a man whose life is unraveling. Spooky season may be fast approaching, but if Universal Pictures has its way it'll last all the way into January. Today, the first official teaser for Wolf Man was unveiled. If this is the first you're hearing about it...well, it's exactly what it sounds like. This is Universal and Blumhouse's take on the classic 1941 Universal monster flick, about a werewolf who howls at the moon, chomps up unfortunates who stray into his path, and otherwise does the things you'd expect a werewolf to do.
In this latest version of the Wolf Man, it seems like he'll be dealing with an awful lot of emotional turmoil as well. In the teaser, which you can watch above, we see the first terrifying hints of the Wolf Man's transformation, and how his family reacts to having a lycanthrope in their midst.

Likely as a response to the backlash our recent first look at the titular werewolf via an actor in a costume at Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights received, Blumhouse has released the first official teaser trailer for Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man.
While the trailer mostly keeps the beast under wraps aside from a few shadowy shots, we do get a couple of very quick glimpses of the creature running through the forest, and another through a rifle scope.
It's quite blurry and difficult to make out too many details, but based on what we do see, it does look like the display costume was indeed influenced by the movie monster.
At any rate, this is a very effective teaser, and should garner some more positive feedback from horror fans.
Check out the trailer along with a poster and a lengthy synopsis, and let us know what you think in the comments section down below.

Before everyone logs off for the weekend, Whannell and Blumhouse hit horror fans with a Wolf Man teaser trailer, previewing the filmmaker’s latest bone-chilling horror film.

Leigh Whannell’s upcoming monster movie just got its first spooky teaser. Here’s the Wolf Man trailer.
It feels like Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man has been in the making for a small eternity now, but finally, the first reels of footage have been unleashed on the internet.
Universal Pictures has released the first teaser trailer for Whannell’s creature feature, which you can find below.
Well, colour us teased. We get a few glimpses of what might await our characters, but for the most part, Whannell keeps the monster hidden at this stage. Whannell directed the superb, very successful The Invisible Man, so we’d say the director knows a thing or two about concealing villains and making your audience wait for the reveal.

Just before the real-world horrors of 2020 were unleashed, filmmaker Leigh Whannell unleashed a horror of the more enjoyable kind: his stark take on The Invisible Man, reinventing the Hg Wells story (and Universal Monster) as a parable on gaslighting. There, Elisabeth Moss was stalked by her abusive invisible ex, and nobody believed her. Now, Whannell is back with another recalibration of a Universal Monsters favourite: the Wolf Man. Or, as he is here, simply Wolf Man – another film that promises a smart take on a creature as old as time. This one stars Christopher Abbott as Blake, the man who transforms into the titular beast, with Ozark’s Julia Garner as his wife Charlotte. Soon, she’ll have to face up to the notion that her loving husband is becoming… something else. Watch the trailer:

Things are getting hairy for Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner in the first teaser trailer for Wolf Man.
Universal Pictures is set to release director Leigh Whannell’s horror feature in theaters Jan. 17, 2025. The film is a reimagining of the classic monster franchise that launched with 1941’s The Wolf Man. The new version centers on a man whose family is hunted by a deadly predator.
“It sounded like an animal,” Abbott says in the trailer. “But I swear to God, it was standing on two feet.”
Later, a young girl asks, “What’s wrong with Daddy?”
Sam Jaeger and Matilda Firth round out the cast. Blumhouse and Motel Movies are behind the film that previously had Ryan Gosling attached as the lead before Abbott took over in the title role.
Jason Blum produces the movie that counts Whannell, Gosling, Ken Kao, Beatriz Sequeira and Melanie Turner as executive producers.

From Blumhouse and visionary writer-director Leigh Whannell, the creators of the chilling modern monster tale The Invisible Man (2020), comes a terrifying new lupine nightmare: Wolf Man. The new tagline: "What if someone you loved became something else?" A man must protect himself and his family when they are being stalked, terrorized, and haunted by a deadly werewolf at night during a full moon. Christopher Abbott stars with Julia Garner, Sam Jaeger, Matilda Firth, Ben Prendergast,...

The promotion cycle for Universal's upcoming "Wolf Man" remake is off to a rocky start, after the creature design for the titular monster was revealed ... as a costume at Universal's Halloween Horror Nights. While we can assume that the movie version of the werewolf costume will be more impressive than the haunted house version, horror fans were understandably underwhelmed by this first look at the white-haired, mush-faced monster.
Seemingly in an effort at damage control, Universal has dropped the first teaser trailer for "Wolf Man," which was directed by Leigh Whannell and stars Christopher Abbott ("Poor Things") as the unfortunate family man who becomes a thrall of the full moon. There's just one problem: The teaser doesn't really show the Wolf Man -- just brief, blurry glimpses of it and an attack by a hairy arm. There's no image here to replace the viral shots of the Halloween Horror...

Universal Pictures and Blumhouse have revealed the official teaser trailer and poster for Wolf Man, which will open in theaters on January 17, 2024.
From Blumhouse and writer-director Leigh Whannell, the creators of the chilling modern monster tale The Invisible Man, comes a terrifying new lupine nightmare: Wolf Man.
What if someone you loved became something else? Golden Globe nominee Christopher Abbott stars as Blake, a San Francisco husband and father, who inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his own father vanishes and is presumed dead.
With his marriage to his high-powered wife, Charlotte, fraying, Blake persuades Charlotte to take a break from the city and visit the property with their young daughter, Ginger.
But as the family approaches the farmhouse in the dead of night, they’re attacked by an unseen animal and, in a desperate escape, barricade themselves inside the home as the creature prowls the perimeter.

Awooo! Universal and Blumhouse have released the first trailer for “Wolf Man,” starring Christopher Abbott as the classic horror monster.
Abbott stars alongside Julia Garner. The film marks an on-screen reunion for the actors, as the pair worked together in 2011’s “Martha, Marcy, May, Marlene,” Garner’s first professional acting role.
This is not Abbott’s debut in the horror genre, having starred in 2017’s “It Comes at Night.” Abbott also appeared recently in the Oscar-nominated “Poor Things” and 2019’s “Catch-22.” Garner rose to acclaim following her three-time Emmy-winning performance as Ruth Langmore in “Ozark.” She was also given a nod for 2022’s “Inventing Anna,” receiving an Emmy nomination for her turn as Anna Delvey in Shonda Rhimes’ limited series.
“Wolf Man” is directed by Leigh Whannell, the “Saw” co-creator who also helmed the 2020 horror hit “The Invisible Man,” which grossed $144 million at the global box office. It is also...

Who can forget Universal’s ill-fated Dark Universe that failed right out of the gate with “The Mummy” starring Tom Cruise, despite having announced an entire cast to play Universal monster characters like Bride Of Frankenstein, Creature From The Black Lagoon and more. Thankfully, Blumhouse, the independent horror studio set up at Universal, took over the Monsterverse and successfully relaunched it with the terrific horror thriller, “The Invisible Man.

Director Leigh Whannell (The Invisible Man) returns to the world of the Universal Monsters with next year’s Wolf Man, and the short-and-sweet teaser trailer has arrived today.
From Universal and Blumhouse, Whannell’s Wolf Man will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025, and you can watch the first look official teaser down below.
The teaser has been unleashed by Universal in the wake of a questionable Halloween Horror Nights costume based on the movie going viral online, though the teaser doesn’t actually give us a glimpse of the Wolf Man character design. Instead, it effectively sets the mood for a savage werewolf movie through only brief glimpses of Whannell’s fresh take on the material.
On that note, don’t judge a movie by its Halloween Horror Nights costume!
Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Yesterday, we got our first look at what was believed to be the new Wolfman design for Universal and Blumhouse's upcoming reboot (titled Wolf Man), with an actor donning a monster costume to jump out at passers-by at Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights takeover attraction.
The reveal was met with a decidedly mixed response (and we're probably being kind there) from fans, most of whom felt that the titular lycanthrope looked more like some kind of mutant hillbilly from the Wrong Turn movies than an actual werewolf.
There was speculation that this might simply be a guy in a thrown-together outfit and not indicative of the Wolfman's official look, but insider Daniel Richtman believes this is indeed how the creature will be depicted in the movie - though it is said to "look slightly better in the actual film."
It's certainly... a choice! But we're sure it will look at lot better in the movie,...

Earlier this year, it was announced that a remake of the 1941 horror movie classic The Wolf Man was being made at Blumhouse. Filming began in March with Leigh Whannell, the director behind the successful 2020 remake of The Invisible Man, returning and Christopher Abbot playing the titular monster. The movie is the latest in the reimagining of the classic monsters from the studio behind the Paranormal Activity franchise.
Many were curious as to how the studio would handle the story, as their take on the Invisible Man was very different form the 1933 original. The last time The Wolf Man was seen on screen was the 2010 version starring Benicio del Toro and Anthony Hopkins.
Now, at this year’s Halloween Horror Nights event in Universal Studios, guests got a sneak peak at the look of this new Wolf Man version and it is, well…
