Fans of the Hellboy movies may find a different character than the one they've come to know on screen in the upcoming Hellboy: The Crooked Man, but comic book fans should feel right at home. Far from the high-stakes superhero action of the first two films directed by Guillermo del Toro,...

The Hellboy franchise had seen several big-screen adaptations, and while Guillermo del Toro’s films were loved by fans, the last reboot failed to meet their expectations.

Many would be wondering if the famed horror filmmaker will try to make another Hellboy movie to close the saga to a trilogy, but comic book creator Mike Mignola believes del Toro won’t attempt to do so.
Mike Mignola Comments On Guillermo del Toro’s Possible Return to Helm Hellboy 3
Brian Taylor’s Hellboy: The Crooked Man is the latest iteration in the action horror film series. The demonic character was first introduced in Guillermo del Toro’s 2004 film, which spawned a sequel in 2008. Despite their critical successes, he never got to make another follow-up installment.

Hellboy creator Mike Mignola got candid about his true sentiments regarding the sequel to the 2004 film. As one of the most popular comic figures, it’s no wonder why a lot of filmmakers wish to interpret and adapt its story on the big screen.

But, like many sequels, Hellboy II: The Golden Army did not live up to Mignola’s expectations. This remains a puzzle because it was actually a commercial success and many fans loved it. As it turns out, it was more of a personal reason.
Mike Mignola Didn’t Have A Great Time Working On Hellboy Sequel
Master of horror films Guillermo del Toro adapted the live-action movie of Hellboy in 2004. The franchise generated interest from viewers, and it easily made more demands for a sequel. In 2008, he made Hellboy II: The Golden Army with Ron Perlman reprising the titular role.

Ryan Gosling almost suited up as a superhero, and the story behind it is wild! Before joining the Barbie world or serenading us in La La Land, Gosling was eyeing a different kind of role—a superhero flick that once had the Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman, attached. Yeah, imagine Gosling trading in his smooth, brooding charm for some crime-fighting action.

While we didn’t get to see him don a cape (or claws), just knowing he considered it has us wondering what could’ve been. Was this an alternate reality where Ken and Wolverine join forces? Maybe. Either way, this what-if is giving us some serious comic-book movie Fomo!

At this year’s Pigeon Shrine FrightFest, we were lucky enough to catch up with directors Sarah Appleton and Phillip Escott about their new horror documentary, Generation Terror, which had its world premiere at the event.
Immediately after the screening, the pair granted us the following interview about the documentary, and fans of their work will definitely be interested in hearing what they have to say. Appleton and Escott are already an established duo, as they previously co-directed another horror documentary called The Found Footage Phenomenon, which examines the found footage subgenre. While Escott individually helmed a documentary about the popular Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise called The Legacy of the Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Appleton individually helmed a documentary about filmmaker David Hamilton Grant called Damaged. She also previously co-directed a feature length documentary about Japanese horror called The J-Horror Virus alongside Jasper Sharp.

The Descent director Neil Marshall returns with action thriller Duchess, starring Charlotte Kirk. Here’s the first trailer for the movie.
Neil Marshall made his name with a string of successful horror films like Dog Soldiers and The Descent. The latter is often considered one of the best, most terrifying horror films of the 2000s. Marshall was only involved with the sequel as an executive producer, though.
He then ventured into science fiction with 2008’s Doomsday followed by historical adventure Centurion. While he found little success with the 2019 reboot of Hellboy, he returned to his roots for the last couple of films, including 2020’s The Reckoning and 2022’s The Lair. He has also pivoted to the small screen in recent years, directing episodes of Hannibal, Westworld, Timeless and Lost In Space.
Now, he turns his hand to action with Duchess. The synopsis reads as follows:

Hellboy’s second reboot has a very low budget as compared to its previous two iterations. While the first version of the character had a fun time being in the hands of Guillermo Del Toro, the second had a similarly big budget under Neil Marshall. However, possibly because of the abysmal performance of the David Harbour starter, the second reboot of the film does not have as much money behind it.

Now that the poster for the film is out, fans are concerned that the film might not be suited for a theatrical release, given the tiny amount of money that has gone into it. Further, fans believe that the film has an odd ‘direct to DVD’ quality that is extremely off-putting.

A young crook known as Duchess (Charlotte Kirk) gets involved with the nefarious Robert (Phillip Winchester) and the underworld of diamond trafficking. Her wrong turns take her halfway across the world, and she ends up being left for dead when a deal quickly goes wrong. Duchess is quick to try and seek retribution, and that means taking everyone on.
The good thing — “thing,” not “things” — about Duchess is even just by watching the trailer, seeing a poster, or reading the cast list, you know exactly what type of movie you’re going to get. Unfortunately, that type is fairly unsavoury. Forget any Guy Ritchie film, Fight Club, or Layer Cake, this time, it’s never been a worse thing to be British. If there’s one thing horror fans and filmmakers love to do, it’s compare notes on their favourite facets of the genre. About movies, about influences, about giant creepy-crawlies. And most of all, about the different driving trends of the many eras; what we were scared of, and how that bled so openly into the defining genre cinema of the time. From the atomic fallout of the 1950s and the creature features that followed, to the rise of exploitation, and the real-world killers behind the eventual slasher boom of the ’80s, it’s the subtext that an entire community is built on.
So there’s something particularly warm and comforting about Sarah Appleton and Phillip Escott’s similarly-tinged doc Generation Terror, which seeks to unravel the real-world fears behind the particularly grisly output of the 2000s. An era often characterised by iffy remakes and gnarly extremity which made for...

A new live-action vision of Hellboy will be coming to our screens soon. Directed by Crank‘s Brian Taylor from a screenplay by Chris Golden and Hellboy comic book creator Mike Mignola, Hellboy: The Crooked Man is commonly being referred to as a franchise reboot… but that’s not how Taylor sees it.
Speaking to Total Film, Taylor said that this was an attempt to be closer to the source material than previous Hellboy movies have been. “As cool as those other movies were, even Mignola will tell you it’s not quite his character.” He went on to say, “I don’t think in terms of ‘it’s a reboot’ or trying to start a new franchise – this isn’t content, it’s a movie that needs to stand on its own. Nobody wants to see a cheap knock-off of a Guillermo del Toro $100-million movie. This is going...

“Duchess” is a movie directed by Neil Marshall starring Charlotte Kirk. With Philip Winchester, Colm Meaney and Stephanie Beacham.
Are you on the hunt for a comedic action thriller sprinkled with mafia gang elements? “Duchess” brings these well-trodden themes to the table, but this time with a twist: a female lead. Charlotte Kirk, portrayed by Scarlett Monaghan, steps into the spotlight.
“Duchess” is a film that attempts to encapsulate the essence of Guy Ritchie’s early works. It features gangsters, a diamond heist plot, a sprinkling of humor, and is set in the gritty, less privileged neighborhoods of London. The twist? The central character is a woman. However, while the aesthetic ambition mirrors Ritchie’s style, the execution falls significantly short. The film lacks the vigor and finesse that hallmark Ritchie’s movies.
Plot Summary
After a woman suffers a brutal beating, she sets out on a path of vengeance.

Few franchises have passed through as many hands as the Alien series, and every director who has made an Alien film has gone on to an iconic career: Ridley Scott, David Fincher, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet. The newest entry, Alien: Romulus, is helmed by someone who has already made a name for himself in the horror genre — Fede Alvarez. While not everything about Alvarez’s take on the series works, it’s exciting to see an Alien movie actually be scary again.
Alien: Romulus Review
Alien: Romulus follows a group of young space colonizers who scavenge an abandoned space outpost hoping to reach freedom, only to encounter the “perfect killing machine,” setting them on a fight for their lives. After James Cameron’s Aliens took the film on a more action-heavy sci-fi route, it’s nice to see Romulus return the franchise to its horror roots.

Colm Meaney is best known for playing Miles O'Brien in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, but he's also clocked up a long list of other critically acclaimed acting roles across film and television.
The Irish actor counts the likes of Hell on Wheels, Layer Cake, The Damned United, and The Journey among his credits, and most recently stars alongside Charlotte Kirk in Neil Marshall's action-packed new British action-crime thriller, Duchess.
While Meaney is only in one lengthy scene as the protagonist's father, "Mad Frank," it's another phenomenal performance which sees the actor embrace his dark side.
"Oh, I think [Frank is] straight-up bad," he tells us in the video below. "He says so himself, 'I was born like this. I'm rotten to the core. I'll never be any different, don't fool yourself. You're not going to get redemption here.' He's got a very clear...

Directed by Neil Marshall and starring Charlotte Kirk as the protagonist, Duchess is a forgettable watch with a run-of-the-mill script and unconvincing performances. This low-quality action crime thriller (at best a parody) tries hard to imitate the Tarantino style but fails massively. Petty criminal Scarlett Monaghan met the love of her life, diamond smuggler Robert McNaughton, at a club. She was busy pickpocketing men there, and Robert, who had been observing her for some time, was impressed by her swift moves. Scarlett warned Robert that her boyfriend (handler) was keeping an eye on her, but he did not care. Robert candidly mentioned that he liked her and hoped to learn more about her. Her cokehead handler, Adam, interrupted their flirty conversation and left the club with Scarlett. Robert and his trusted men, Danny Oswald and Billy Baraka, knocked down the security guards when they were stopped on their way out of the club.

The character of Transporter Chief Miles O'Brien (Colm Meaney) first appeared in "Encounter at Farpoint," the pilot episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation." For many episodes, he was basically a background character, usually present to deliver a line or two of techno-jargon and to beam the senior staff from the ship to a planet and back. With each appearance, though, audiences began to get more details about O'Brien's life. He used to build ships in bottles as a boy, for instance. O'Brien would marry and have a child. All told, O'Brien appeared in 52 episodes of the show, sometimes starring in his own stories.
The character became popular enough to be carried over to "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" in 1993, on which he was a regular character. On "Deep Space Nine," O'Brien became even more awesome, serving as the chief engineer on the station, having to familiarize himself with dated Cardassian technology,...

Neil Marshall seems to want what Guy Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino had in the early aughts. For his latest outing, the once-promising English filmmaker behind horror films like “Dog Soldiers” and “The Descent” scales back his interest in frights for a more straightforward tale of fights, but fails to land nearly every punch he throws. Rather than build on the template his aforementioned peers built on themselves, Marshall does nothing for the ensemble crime thriller genre other than play the hits, which would’ve been bearable had he actually done so on key and with some care or nuance.

The art of boxing, it is often said, hinges not on how hard you can hit but on how well you can take a punch. Dodging is better, most of the time, but you have to be able to get back up and carry on no matter how rough you feel. The heroine of Neil Marshall’s latest actioner, played once again by Charlotte Kirk, only discovers how hard she can fight when she’s already lost what mattered to her most.
Her name is Scarlett; Duchess is a nickname suggested by a henchman, which she adopts because it seems to fit. She has a mixture of glamour and – when she’s trying – gracefulness which seems to be unusual in their circles, despite the fact that crime boss Rob (Philip Winchester) is a wealthy man unlikely to have much difficulty in attracting women. He spots her in a nightclub where she’s working.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Only with Neil Marshall’s filmography, especially the uninspired actioner Duchess, the fall has been so drastic that one has to wonder whether he was that mighty to begin with. After a one-two punch of early aughts cult favorites in Dog Soldiers and The Descent, Marshall’s career has been on a serious downward spiral, and his latest effort — if you can even call it that, as that implies effort was put in by anyone involved — is a new low.

Plot: Follows a tough, working-class, petty criminal who morphs into an anti-heroine to be reckoned with in a murky underworld, in the treacherous world of diamond smuggling.
Review: Ever since Dog Soldiers/The Descent, I’ve stood firmly by, waiting for Neil Marshall to enter that next level of filmmaking. He’s always had such a fantastic visual style that is easy to identify when watching any of his films. And his sensibilities always felt a little off the beaten path, which I love. But with his partnership with his fiancé, Charlotte Kirk, I’m worried that’s just never going to happen. Because if Duchess is any indication, he seems content just making mediocre fare with Kirk as the lead.

Opening in UK cinemas this weekend, Duchess is Neil Marshall’s latest collaboration with Charlotte Kirk, a revenge thriller in which she plays Scarlett, a pickpocket turned gangster’s moll who is out to avenge her man, discovering a violent streak of her own in the process. it’s a typically entertaining actioner from the Dog Soldiers director, and when we met for a chat about it recently, I told him that it felt to me like a classic East End legend.
“I suppose that was kind of the intention, to create something like that,” he says. “The germ of the idea came about over sushi in 2018. I remember that one. I was having sushi with Charlotte, and we thought about what if we could make a female Scarface? Both being big fans of that film. And then it grew from there into this character of Scarlett and her.

Many of you will likely know filmmaker Neil Marshall best for movies like Dog Soldiers, The Descent, and Doomsday before he shifted gears to television where he received widespread acclaim for helming episodes of Game of Thrones, Hannibal, and more.
On the superhero side, he worked on NBC's well-received Constantine TV series and later helmed 2019's Hellboy reboot starring David Harbour. Now, though, he's taken the helm of Duchess, an action-packed new British action-crime thriller starring - and co-written and produced by - Charlotte Kirk.
"It doesn't add pressure because I didn't necessarily set out to make an iconic character," Marshall tells us in the video below when asked about adding Scarlett, a.k.a. The Duchess, to the pantheon of iconic female action heroes. "It's in the back of your mind that it would be very nice if it happened and it still would be. That's going to...

When asked to describe his take on one of the most well-known comic book characters ever, Hellboy: The Crooked Man star Jack Kesy has a simple answer: “I enjoy to smoke and Hellboy enjoys to smoke.”
To some movie fans, Kesy’s statement may sound flippant. After all, Kesy is stepping into some big shoes. Ron Perlman knocked it out of the park in the two much-loved Hellboy movies directed by Guillermo del Toro. Neil Marshall’s 2019 Hellboy reboot has lots of problems, but none of them involve star David Harbour, who had his own likable energy.
But to those who know the Mike Mignola comics that inspired Hellboy, Kesy’s take is pitch perfect. Hellboy might be a demon from the netherworld who fights all manner of Nazis and monsters, but he’s fundamentally a working class guy. His greatest joy comes not from experiencing the supernatural or doing good,...

London pickpocket Scarlett pulls herself up by the bootstraps after catching the eye of smuggler Robert. He brings her into his flashy criminal world, but his operation comes with risks. When betrayal leaves Scarlett dead in the desert, she rebounds from the ashes like a true phoenix. Now going by Duchess, she aims to avenge Robert with the help of loyal associates Danny and Baraka.
But does director Neil Marshall’s throwback to vintage British gangster flicks hit the mark? The flashy style nods to greats like Guy Ritchie, yet the thin plot and flat characters struggle to rise above the formula. We get a busy introduction over exposition instead of seeing Scarlett’s fire sparked onscreen. The sluggish pace waits an hour to truly ignite the vengeance action fans crave.
Still, Marshall shows flashes of his early magic. Ferocious lead Charlotte Kirk drives thrilling violence and black comedy beats.

Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” continued its reign at the top of the U.K. and Ireland box office, slicing through the competition in its second week of release.

A heroine who looks good in Lycra and a love interest with no chemistry don’t leave you wanting more, despite Duchess’s sequel-friendly ending
So derivative that it almost qualifies as a type of financial instrument, this crime thriller is clearly investing in its own future as a low-budget franchise, given how sequel-friendly it leaves the conclusion. Much will depend on whether viewers take to its titular heroine, scrappy Londoner Scarlett Monaghan (Charlotte Kirk). Our leggy heroine graduates from minor crimes such as pickpocketing drunks to more advanced forms of larceny when she hooks up with mid-level gangster Robert (Philip Winchester), whom she describes in voiceover as the love of her life. That assertion isn’t all that convincing given how little chemistry there is between the two leads, but who are we to question the feelings of fictional characters?
At least there is no need to ponder too...

San Diego Comic-Con is always a pretty big show, and this year proved to be no exception. Indeed, Sdcc, after a quiet 2023 (where it was impacted by the strikes) seemed to be back in full force this year, with Hall H once again housing panels that were next to impossible to get into if you didn’t plan well ahead. As usual, JoBlo was there to cover the festivities, and I gotta say, it was a whirlwind.
While I’ve worked for JoBlo since 2007, I never actually attended Sdcc for the company in the olden days. It’s only since becoming Editor-in-Chief that I’ve started going, and I’ve been having a blast in San Diego, that’s for sure. This year I covered the convention with Mike Conway, who you might know from his work on JoBlo Horror Originals (he’s the host of Horror Party Movies and...

Filmmaker Neil Marshall made a name for himself by directing movies like Dog Soldiers, The Descent, and Doomsday before shifting gears to television where he received widespread acclaim for helming episodes of Game of Thrones, Hannibal, and more.
He first tackled a comic book adaptation with NBC's Constantine. The series toned down its title character for network television and was cancelled after 13 episodes; despite that, it was a hit with fans and, thanks to the popularity of Matt Ryan's interpretation, the Hellblazer found a second life on The CW.
In 2019, Marshall set his sights on Hellboy. The movie already had the odds stacked against it thanks to the demand for Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy 3, but issues behind the scenes derailed the project and it proved a critical and commercial disappointment.

Neil Marshall got his feature directorial career started with one of the coolest werewolf movies ever made, Dog Soldiers, which begins with a scene where a camper played by Craig Conway gets attacked by a monstrous beast. Marshall went on to cast Conway as a different sort of monstrous beast in his next film, The Descent, then as a power-hungry cannibal named Sol in his film Doomsday (pictured above). Now Marshall is serving as an executive producer on Conway’s own feature directorial debut… and judging by the title, Conway might be getting his directing career started in a way similar to Marshall’s own. Because when I see the title Little Red, my first thought is that this could be a werewolf movie.
Deadline has confirmed that Little Red “will reimagine the Little Red Riding Hood story through a contemporary lens.” The involvement of werewolves, however, has not been confirmed.

Last month, we got a look at the trailer for the action thriller Duchess, the latest film from director Neil Marshall. Saban Films will be giving Duchess a digital and VOD release on August 9th… and with that date just one week away, a pair of promotional clips have made their way online. They’re called the “Home Invasion” and “Garage Ambush” clips, and you can watch them right here in this article.
In the UK, Duchess will be getting a limited theatrical release on August 9th, and will then be available for digital download on the 12th.
Marshall wrote the Duchess screenplay with Charlotte Kirk, who also stars as the title character, a tough, working-class, petty criminal who morphs into an anti-heroine to be reckoned with in a murky underworld, in the treacherous world of diamond smuggling. Determined to seek retribution she launches into a vicious and violent pursuit for vengeance.

Ahead of its September release, catch a look at Hellboy: The Crooked Man, written by the character’s original comic book creator.
We known for a while now that the latest adaptation of the Hellboy character will be called Hellboy: The Crooked Man, and that – for the first time – the screenplay has been penned by creator of the character, Mike Mignola, alongside his comic book collaborator Christopher Golden. Crank's Brian Taylor is directing the latest adventure for Hellboy, and the creatives will no doubt be hoping to recapture the magic of Guillermo del Toro’s beloved brace of films.
While it isn’t the the reunion of del Toro and Ron Perlman (as the titular character) that fans have long been hoping for, the involvement of Mignola and Golden as screenwriters is promising, as is the reveal that the story will be smaller in scale than anything we’ve seen...

In Hollywood, the anticipation surrounding reboots and adaptations has often stirred mixed emotions among the fans. Now the newly released trailer of Hellboy: The Crooked Man has further intensified the fears of those who cherished Guillermo del Toro’s vision for the Hellboy movies.

The unwanted reboot is further driving the beloved franchise to the ground, with some even comparing it to the box office failure of movies like Madam Web and Argylle.
Hellboy: The Crooked Man Trailer Casts a Dark Shadow on Guillermo del Toro’s Legacy
Guillermo del Toro helmed the initial two movies, Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008). After the second movie, the entire franchise had been stuck in development issues. Further, del Toro was supposed to helm the third installment as well, but the plan for the same fell through.

As a veteran of what we now call the “old internet,” I remember a time when the scariest media you could find online consisted of seemingly innocent image macros containing sinister details lurking in the background. Known as “mindf*ck” images, half the fun of sharing these spooky memes was the anticipation of finding whatever poorly photoshopped demon face that awaited you in the dark.
Years later, I still find myself fascinated by hidden horrors and I’m clearly not the only one – as we can see by the success of films like Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs, which features its own set of demonic background scares. And in honor of this specific kind of subliminal fright, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the freakiest hidden scares in film.
For the purposes of this list, we’ll be classifying “hidden horrors” as any easily missable background...

World-ending apocalypses are inherently terrifying, but sometimes what comes after is even scarier. The remnants of humanity are left to pick up the pieces of a world torn apart by devastating catastrophe, with resources far scarcer than ever-present threats.
This week’s streaming picks belong to post-apocalyptic horror movies that explore life after the world as we know it has ended, where conditions are harsh and survival odds are low.
While the frequent recurring theme of post-apocalyptic movies highlights how humankind is its own worst enemy, these five titles take drastically different approaches. Some favor retro style, while others infuse their wastelands with a heaping helping of inhuman monsters.
