Big Number

54%

Returning to their usual September berth helped give a big boost to the TV ratings for the Emmy Awards. The Sept. 15 show, hosted by Eugene and Dan Levy on ABC, averaged 6.87 viewers in fast national ratings from Nielsen, including out of home viewing. That’s a 54 percent jump over the delayed 2023 awards, which pulled in 4.46 million viewers — an all-time low for the awards. Full story.

A Blockbuster Debate

ABC News, which produced the Kamala Harris-Donald Trump debate on Sept. 10, drew by far the biggest audience of any single network with 19.05 million viewers from 9-10:45 p.m. ET. NBC placed second with 10.08 million viewers, followed by Fox News with 9.06 million. MSNBC (6.38 million) edged CBS (6.19 million) for fourth place; then came the Fox broadcast network (4.85 million), CNN (4.39 million), Telemundo (1.16 million), Univision (975,000) and Fox Business (295,000). Nielsen ratings figures show the debate drawing about 67.14 million viewers across the big four broadcast networks, CNN, Fox News, Fox Business and MSNBC. That’s about 16 million more people than the final tally for the June 27 debate between Trump and Joe Biden.

DATA SPOTLIGHT

TV Use by Platform In August

Overall TV use rose by 8 percent from July to August, again fueled by the 14 days of Olympics coverage. Streaming (41 percent of all usage) and cable (26.3 percent) both declined by 0.4 points, and other TV use — including gaming and physical media playback — fell from 11.6 percent in July to 10.7 percent, according to Nielsen's latest Gauge report on Sept. 17.
