I loved these short stories. Yes, I tend to enjoy short stories anyway as I admire how an author can set the scene, start and conclude a plot and provide us with a good sense of the main character in so few pages. That was what Mary Grand did here, and did it well. The stories are vignettes in the lives of four women and they all resonated with me for different reasons and at least one of these four stories would captivate most readers.
This was a difficult story for Elvira Cordileone to write. Most immigrant families hide family abuse and mental illness in a cone of silence. As the oldest child, she was born in Italy, but has some memories of her time in Campochiaro before they immigrated to Canada in 1952 and her two younger siblings were born soon after that in Montreal.
