Thank you so much for such a thoughtful, detailed review that also provided me with excellent feedback on places that could have been better. I am simply thrilled that you grokked what the book was truly all about, and that you enjoyed it.
Even though the book was semi-autobiographical, at some point Alice became her own person, with the story going in a direction that my own life did not. That fact was, and remains, one of the more satisfying aspects of tackling the storyline and the characters.
It's clear you received pleasure from reading it. I couldn't ask for a higher compliment! And, who knows? There may just be a Nineties Alice book in the works, only it's a suspense, but still based on life...

It's interesting, Ella, but also very dated, and more cold/clinical than erotic. Definitely an interesting read, and certainly quite brutal. As for being tamed down, I guess it depends on the edition. It's become a public domain text, you have to watch what you're buying. I have the Grove Press editions, and they seem pretty authoritative.Justine was a better 'story' but 120 Days is almost required reading for anybody interested in the origins of S&M. :)
