I am a former librarian with a lifelong love of fiction. I was born, raised, and have lived in Southern California all my life. My novels are set in local cities (LA, Pasadena, Palm Springs, Long Beach, etc.) and convey the California ambience from a working-class writer's perspective. The characters in my novels are ethnically diverse. ...more

I realize that would be difficult for him to do since we grew up together and lived off and on in the same house until I was in my late twenties. I’ll probably make some kind of appearance in his memoir. I can only hope tha

I couldn’t put this one down. Twists and turns kept me glued to the page. I enjoyed the diverse characters even more than the plot, although the political candidate Carp comes off as a stereotype. The plot gets a bit complicated toward the end, and I ...more

The author’s latest novel can be taken as a study of the harsh realities that women, people of color, and gay people had to endure in Hollywood of the 1950s. It can also be taken as a study of how society objectifies beautiful women. Or, it can be st ...more

In this latest Manny Rivera mystery, it seems that Curtin is concentrating on story rather than delving into the personal life of his protagonist. While in one section the story gets quite technical on the subject of drones, there is plenty of myster ...more

"Unpopular opinion ahead

I had no desire to read Hamnet when I first heard of it. Shakespeare gets married, they have kids, one dies, he writes "Hamlet".

Nope, not interested. Then several of my friends wrote amazing reviews and reeled me in. I was sti" Read more of this review »

This is a YA book. I found it interesting and liked the well-drawn characters. The story is a slow read, though. I kept waiting for a climactic moment to happen, but when it does, well, it doesn’t exactly deliver the wow I expected.

I liked this book enough to consider reading more in the series, but only because the main character is entertaining, not because the mystery is intriguing. Some of the other characters weren’t detailed enough for me to try and guess whodunit.
