Is it just me but I just loathe Edgar Allan Poe with a very strong passion and after watching the Raven a new movie that is coming out in 2012 I have decided I just loathe it, I mean especially his murder cases they are so gross and disgusting, how can anyone call this a true classic and masterpiece of writing. I feel so alone on this subject or am I?!

Poe is my favourite author. Too bad he won't be writing anything soon... Anyway, I was wondering whether you were forced to read it in high school. I've found that most of the books and stories that I was forced to read are a loathsome reminder of those years.

You can't possibly be the only person out there who thinks his work is crap. I'll make a wild guess and say that probably at least a third of the reading community don't take to Poe. Different tastes, right? Actually, I can think of a bunch of people I know off the top of my head who don't or wouldn't like his writing.

I don't really like his detective stories myself, I kind of find them a bit long and boring. As for the movie (which is on DVD now), it was entertaining, but I'd rather read one of his stories.

If you like horror, but not this genre (gothic horror), may I recommend The Lottery by Shirley Jackson? It's more subtle than some of Poe's more famous stories.

You probably aren't a horror fan. To each his own. I for one love horror movies and stories. I have a complete works collection of Poe that I read every other year. I have The Raven memorized. He's one of my all time favorites. There's a new movie coming out in 2012? Thanks for letting me know.

Haha I really like some of Poe's work. Spent a semester studying him. I do agree that his work can be disturbing but for me that is part of his appeal. Definitely not for everyone.
