it was amazing
bookshelves: mystery, 5-star-favourites, historical-fiction

This was a mind boggler.
A mystery twofer told in dual timelines. One child who has gone missing in 1961; another 1975. Both are from the prestigious Van Laar family and owners of the camp.
The setting is in the wooded area of the Adirondacks. But don’t be fooled by the beauty of the landscape. Something ugly is happening in these woods.

This story is stacked with multiple characters, multiple scenarios and multiple suspects.

Believe the hype. 5⭐️

Canadian Jen JaymeO wrote: "Terrific review! I’m worried this one might be too slow for me."

I didn't find it slow, Jayme. I think you might surprised. You will need to keep characters in place though which I struggled with at the beginning but got to know all of them by the middle.

Lori Keeton I love your concise reviews, Jen! I wish I had your skill! I had a hs English teacher (who became my MIL) who said I was too wordy when I write. Been trying for over 30 years to fix that!🤪

message 22: by K (new) - rated it 5 stars

K I bought this based on the hype! I’m so glad to read your review because I think we’re book-compatible. I hope to read it this summer…seems like a good season to read this one.

message 23: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan K (Max Outlier) Nice to see a brief summary and obvious it was a home run. That said, would you characterize the theme as overly dark? I ask since she seems to lean that way with many if not all her stories..

message 24: by Dana (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dana It was so good! Nice review, Jen!

Laura It’s a good one, “stacked” is a great description. Layers of an onion come to mind as well.

Canadian Jen K wrote: "I bought this based on the hype! I’m so glad to read your review because I think we’re book-compatible. I hope to read it this summer…seems like a good season to read this one."

I really wasn't sure as I have high expectations for mysteries/thrillers....but this did meet them for me. I'll be looking fwd to your thoughts, K.

Canadian Jen Jonathan wrote: "Nice to see a brief summary and obvious it was a home run. That said, would you characterize the theme as overly dark? I ask since she seems to lean that way with many if not all her stories.."

I've only read Long Bright River by this author, Jonathan, which I thought was darker than this.. I wouldn't classify it as dark at all. I've read some dark ones and this wasn't remotely close.

I took journalism and it was drilled into our heads "KISS" keep it simple stupid. LOL> I have reviews that are not so much in keeping with this! But thanks Lori 😊

Canadian Jen Thanks Dana & Laura!
