"So you've uncovered the fact that I'm an asshole. Why is that news?" - Steve Jobs to a Fortune Magazine editor.

I can't compose a review of this remarkably candid biography without being painfully aware that Steve Jobs would call my review a piece of crap and send me packing. (It's not easy having, as your creative-genius hero, someone you know would find you lacking.) So I'll settle for saying this was a surprisingly emo read for me.

And one more thing.

I've worked for and with some real assholes In my long career. Screamers, belittlers, credit-grabbers, the whole array. None of them were geniuses, though; none were people I respected, so they couldn't hurt my feelings. They could make me so angry I wept, but they couldn't hurt me, heart-deep. This man would have been able to do that. He was brilliant; maybe the one American business executive I have ever admired.

One other thing: Steve Jobs is an overwhelming presence in this book, to the extent that I and others seem to forget there is an author involved. That's talent.

Rest well, Steve Jobs. Composed on my iPhone in a rainy parking lot. So thanks.
